Nothing pkases Us moro than to have our friends call with items. We want oil tho news but can got it only with tho aid of friends. For how are we to lind out unless somebody tells us. As will be seen by announcement else where in this paper, -Mel Heritage is again a candidate for city marshal. Mr. Heri tage lias served the people in that capacity during the past year and relies for his re election solely on the record ho lias made and the consciousness ot duty well per formed. Ho will make a good marshal, if elected. The Astorian puts it tliusly: "There are many coming all the time, but they are onlv as the first low rush of tho tide, to the tossing waves of the human sea that will ilow from tho East this way in 1800." There is nothing that will stop the tide and Union county may expect her full share of it. This Is Thanksgiving Day and will bo observed by many of our citizens. Those who can afford to will dine on turkey, and ftol duly thankful that it is as well with tlicni as it is, while tho poor and needy will worry along on dry bread as heretofore. It strikes us that if this "Thanksgiving Day" were changed to a "Charity Day" in which every human being would be expect ed to do some act of charity, speak some words of kindness and with self denial go out of tho way to cheer and holp those less fortunate than tlioy. it would be more worth observing and infinitely more bene riciul to humanity. It seems that the bridge recently built by Union and Wallowa counties across the Grniido Rondo rivor has been found to be quite defective It Is said tliat the string ors only rest on the abutments about fifteen inches and are laid on without any cross beams to make them rest evenly. In con sequence a crack has boon discovered in tho masonry of the abutments which will eventually endanger tho structure if not remedied. Judge Goodall went out, Mon day, to look at the bridge but has not re turned at this writing. If the bridge is as rejiorted somebody should be hold severely accountable. Land Coiitesta Decided. Family Reanlou. The Wright family of Rig creek mid Pow der river had a sort of reunion at (lie resi dence of David Hinilc, on Powder river, .Sunday before last, and after partaking of an old-fashioned Missouri dinner. Hon. Dunham Wright suggested that everybody remain all night and have an old-fashioned Missouri "candy pulling." Accordingly, guests to the number of more than thirty, with Mr. Wright as master of coremonic, engaged in singing, caudv pulling and social plays until, the hour of midnight reminded them that a prolongation of th"ir fun would border on diip.ition. As a leader of such -oci il amusements us "pleased or displeased,'' etc., Dunham is u pronounced success, and as a gonial host Mr. Kmilo is one of tiie boys from the head of the creek. Death of Mr o.
