when silence is wrong and oven cruel.
If thero is much said that should never
havo been breathed, thero is also much
that ought to havo freo utteranco
which is never spoken. It is impossi
ble to estimnto tho amount of hnppi
ness and benefit that is suppressed by
this untimely silenco. Jfot only to tho
absent, but sometimes to thoso present
with us, Is silenco cruel. There is a
wholesomo dread of ilattery among
honest people, which not infrequently
leads them into an opposite extremo of
withholding praiso whero it is due.
Much discouragement and many aban
doned efforts may bo traced to this
source. Of course, it is not the ideal
of manliness to require such a motive,
but few approach tho ideal, and few
can dispenso with tho motive. Tho
young and inexperienced, tho humblo
and self-depreciating, and all begin
ners especially, need every sincero
word of encouragement that can bo
given. It is a stimulus which no pa
rent, no teacher and no employer can
afford to sot aside. Has tho child
been faithful, obedient, studious,
self-donying? Toll him so, and ox
press tho real pleasure you feel,
lias tho young man proved himself
trustworthy, indefatigable, intelligent?
Let him havo tho satisfaction of know
ing thus you appreciato his efforts.
Has tho timid beginner in somo ontor
priso done well for a first attempt?
Do not deny him tho incentive to
furthor efforts that your approval will
afford him. Silenco at such times is
not a mero negative, a blauk, an omis
sion; it is a positive injury, a bar to im
provement, a destroyer. of well-earned
happiness. Then, too, happiness, of
whatever kind, needs utterance. Sad
ness and gloom, pain and distress, may
well havo tho shield of silenco to pre
vent their diffusion, but ovory thing
that is bright, cheery and delightful
should be shared and spread as far as
possible. Yot how frequently is this
reversed, and tho misfortunes of lifo
are disclosed in all their details, while
its blessings aro passively accepted
without remark. The. shadows aro
eagerly described, while of tho sun
light nothing is said. Is not this also
a cruel silence? Happiness is to tho
heart what sunlight is to tho body, and
he who shuts out either is an enemy to
society. Thero nro porsons who will
work for tho good of their fellow-men,
who will give money and time, labor
and thought, to reforms and schemes
for general welfare, who will not
hesitate to make sacrifices to perform
benevolent and kindly actions, but who
never give freo and hearty utteranco
to tho gladness that they may feel, or
tho pleasure they enjoy. It is not that
they intend to deprive any one of hap
piness, but they do not realize how
much they could thus bestow. While
trying in many ways to givo light and
warmth to their fellow-men, they bot
tle up their own sunshino, forgetting
that its influence might extend far and
wide. Let all such pernicious silence
bo speedily broken. If tho day is fair,
and the air puro and clear, let us em
phasizo tho fact; if wo seo any beauty,
let us point it out; if we feel any joy,
let us hasten to share it; if wo havo re
ceived any good, let us freely express

things aro true, or honest, or just, or
pure, or lovely, or of good roport, if
thero bo any virtue, and if there be
any praiso, think on thoso things."'

are then built up with pipe clay and
tow, a piece of wire being so adjusted

forehead and tho other at the tip of the
tail. To this four other wires running
down the legs are fixed. The skin is
then sewn up and tho animal formed
into a desired position. Tho final
operation is putting in tho oyos. Fast
ened upon a scrap of red fiannel in this
manner, a small black kitten makes a

It seems incrediblo; and yot. just above
tho thriving villago of Lanirunsioin, in
the Hartz Mountains, and forming a
part of it, aro about ton dwellings
hewn in tho rocks. They aro called
the "Burg," or "castle," and hero
somo forty porsons havo their home.
In the face of tho solid rock is to be
seen a row of regular-shapod doors and
windows, ono door and ono window
belonging to each dwelling. Tho most
ancient of these dwellings is tho work
of a young married couple whoso ex
tremo poverty gavo them no other
ehoico than to seek a homo in tho
ruggod mountaln-sido. Their work
must bo hold deserving of respect, for
It was no light task to pick away tho
rock bit by bit, as ono workman must,
with no tool but hisplck-axo. Through
tho doorwny one ontors a narrow,
straight hallway, at tho right of which
another doorway loads into a good
sized room with a window, tho only
ono In tho dwelling. Opposite this
doorway, at tho left of tho entry, is a
