    WOODPECKER STORES.
Sow the Husy IMrds Secure Provisions For
Winter Consumption.
In stripping off tho bark, I observed
It perforated with holes larger than
those which a musket bullot would
make, speared with most accurate
precision, as if bored under tho guid
ance of a rule and compass, and many
of them filled most neatly with acorns.
Karlier in tho season 1 remarked
the holes in most all tho soft timber;
but. imagining they wcro caused by
wood insects, I did not stop to exam
ine or inquire; but now finding them
studded with acorns firmly fixed in,
which I know could not havo beea
driven thero by tho wind, I sought for
nn explanation, which was practically
given mo by Captain S 's pointlug
out a llock of woodpeckers busily and
noisily employed in tho providont task
of securing their winter's provisions,
for it appears that tho sagacious bird
is not all tho time thriftlessly engaged
in "tapping the hollow bench tree"
for tho mere idle purpose of empty
eoiitul, but spends its summer season
in picking thoso holes, in which it
lays its store of food for tho winter,
where tho elements can neither affect
nor place it beyond their reach, and it
is considered a suro omen that tho
snowy period is approaching when
these birds commence stowing away
their acorns, which otherwise might
be covered by its fall.
I frequently paused from my chop
ping to watch them in my neighbor
hood, with tho acorns in their bills,
half clawing, half flying round tho
tree, and admired tho adroitness with
which they tried at tho different holes,
until they found ono of its oxact cali
ber, when, Inserting the pointed end,
they tapped it homo most artistically
with their beaks, and flew down for
another. Hut their natural instinct is
even more remarkablo in tho choice of
tho nuts, which you will invariably
find sound; whereas it is a matter of
impossibility, in selecting them for
roasting, to pick up a batch that will
not havo half of them unfit for uso,
the most safo and polished-looking fre
quently containing a largo grub gen
erated within. Even tho wily Indian,
with all his craft and experience, is
unable to arrive at any thing like an
unerring selection, while in a largo
bag full that wo took from tho bark of
our log, there was not ono containing
the slightest germ of decay. They
never encroach on their packed stores
until all on tho surface are covered,
when tlioy resort to those in tho bark,
and peck them of their contents with
out removing tho shell from tho holes.

WILD YOUNG BRITONS.
A Manitoba ltet'ugu Fur tlie Flint Sons of
Nobility.
There is ono of tho strangest farms
in tho world up hero in Manitoba. Its
principal crop is an annual growth of
young Englishmen, sons of wealthy
parents, who have interrupted tho boys
in thoir diligent work of sowing a
thick and early crop of wild oats, and
have sent them out to tho colony to
have thoir moral and physical health
built up and a little industry and use
ful knowledgo instilled into them at
tho same time. Tho owners of tho
farm, two brothers, chargo tho boys
for thi'ir board and instruct them in
farming for nothing, but tho work
they manago to got out of tho young
fellows is worth a good deal moro
than the timo spent in teaching them,
though occasionally a horso is foun
dered or a piece of farm machinery
broken.
It is remarkable, though, how theso
young sprigs of nobility, many of
them, tako to tho hard work of tho
farm. Thoy havo true British grit
about them, and tho managers havo
senso onough to havo tho drudgery
and dirty work dono by hired men.
Tho boys rido tho horso rakes, drive
tho mowing machines, learn to run a
thresher, plow, etc.. and all of them
tako kindly to tho caro of livo-stock,
tho horses especially, though a pro
pensity to race tho latter at every op
portunity has to bo guarded against.
Tho "instincts of gentlemen" do not
seem to desert thorn either, for thoy
will never sit down to eat in the
clothes they havo worked in and thoy
refuse to o it with tho farm hands who
bring tho smoll of stables to tho table.
Bathing, shaving and dressing for tho

AMERICAN COD-LIVER OIL.
How nml AVhere It In Made A rnvorlt
lCrnifilj- of ( ousumptlvrs.
American cod-liver oil Is mndo here.
Tho livers of tho cod. haddock, pollock,
hako and cusk aro used in tho manu
facture. Only about one-third of tho
American output of this oil Is procured
from ood-livers.
From September until March the
livers are fat and In tho best condition.
A bucketful of livers will then yield
about six quarts of oil. Only four
quarts of this, however, can be made
sultabli for medicinal purposes, the
remaining two quarts Is of an inferior
quality and is used by curriers.
From March to Juno the livcra aro
thin and inferior, and will yield only
one-half as much oil. Cod-liver oil
for medicinal purposes must bo mado
from livers of fish that have not been
dead over forty-eight hours. Fishing
vessels on their long trips to tho banks
save tho llsh-llvers in hogsheads and
sell them to tho oil-manufacturers for
thirty cents per bucketful. From theso
livers an inferior quality of oil is made
that 's used by tanners.
Up to about fifteen years ago tho
most primitive means were used for
obtaining oil from livers. Tho results
wero very unsatisfactory, and tho best
portion of tho liver was wasted. The
old method was to expose the livers to
the action of the sun until tho oil was
dried out. Only a small percentage of
oil was thus secured, and tho residue
was thrown away as useless. Now
every portion of the liver is used. Tho
method is to put tho livers into a lar-o
tin-lined vat having a coil of perforat
ed steam pipes in tho bottom. A
pressure of thirty pounds of steam is
put on tho' boiler, and tho steam escap
ing through tho perforations in the
pipes saturates the liver with hot
steam and thus fries out tho oil. In
half an hour after steam is turned on
all the oil that can bo procured by try
ing out will havo arisen to the surface.
Tho livers, now termed "blubber,"
will have sunk to the bottom
of tho vat. Tho oil is bailed olT
and put into barrels to cool and
settle, after which it is refined by be
ing allowed to freeze till it is of the
consistency of thick mush, when it Is
put into drilling bags and tho puro oil
pressed out in a heavy iron press.
Tho oil that is pressed through
tho drilling is considered re
fined, and after being put up in
new barrels of forty-livo gallons
each is sold to the wholesale druggists
for about !1G cents per gallon. From
these it passes to tho retail druggists,
who sell it for $1 or $5 per gallon.
Running the oil through charcoal and
sand has been tried as a refining proc
ess, but it was found to bo vastly in
ferior to tho freezing and pressing
process. Kollned cod-liver oil. when
subjected to tho samo temperature at
which tho crudo oil was frozen, will
change its color and assume a milky
appearanco. Tho refining process
leaves in tho bags a substanco resem
bling lard in color and consistency.
It is a stearine, or "tanner's grease,"
and is used as a dressing for morocco.
Tho blubber loft in tho bottom of tho
vat after tho trying out is allowed to
work and ferment for forty-eight
hours, and is then pressed. After tho
pressure is continued for fourteen
hours all tho oil is secured that re
mains iir tho blubbor. It is inferior
oil, of which thero aro six grades; it
is worth about 2o cents per
gallon, and is used by curriers in
dressing, tanning and coloring leather.
Thero is loft in tho hairs a substance
of the color and consistency of dry
mud called "scrap," which is sold to
farmors as a fertilizer at $9 per ton.
Tho best quality of cod-liver oil
comes from Norway. It is much
clearer and whiter than tho American
oil. It is put up in tin casks holding
thirty gallons each, inclosed in wooden
barrels. Tho claim is mado that no
livers except those of tho codfish aro
used in its manufacture, but American
manufacturers strongly suspect that it
owes its remarkablo clearness to its
having been mixed with seal oil.
Twenty dollars per gallon Is considered
a low price for this oil, and it some
times goes as high as !f28. America is
the largest buyer of Norwegian oil.
Newfoundland cod-liver oil ranks
next to tho Norwegian oil. It is mado
entirely of tho livers of young cod
caught off tho Labrador coast. Port
land has a cod-liver oil factory that
produces oOO barrels per year S00
barrels of refined oil for medicinal
purposes and 200 barrels of "curriers'
oil."
Cod-liver oil has long been recog
nized as a valuable remedial agent,
but it is not generally known that
sometimes when tho oil falls to effect
a cure tho steam arising from tho
trying-out vats will succeed.
A consumptive hero, in almost tho
inst stago of tho disease, happening to
pass through a cod-llver oil factory,
stopped, inhaled large draughts of tho
usually offensive vapors as though
they were tho sweets of a ilowor-gar-dou,
remarking: "There is somothing
hero that seems to strike tho right
spot," and, although a wealthy man,
obtained permission to work in tho
factory. At tho ond of a month ho
had gained thirty pounds, had greatly
improved In nppoaraneo and feeling,
his appetlto had returned, his cough
was gone, and finally ho completely
recovored. Singers also sometimes
resort to cod-llver oil factories to in
hale tho fumes arising from tho vats.
Thoy assert that their voices aro there
by strengthened and cleared. -l'ort-lund
