Ab Explanation of tlin Marvelous Process
of Skin Grafting.
When largo nreas of skin nro ds
atroyed, as happens in tho caso of
Bovoro burns or extensive injuries, it
Is sometimes months beforo tho sur
face is again covered with epidermis.
Repair may have pono on till tho stir
faco is on a level with tho surrounding
parts, and all that remains is for tho
Bkin to creep in from tho edges; but
this process, especially in persons
weakened by long confitiomorit in bod,
is vory slow, and tho constant dis
charge of matter from tho open sur
faco causes irritation, as well as weak
ness. It has been known for many years
that a flap of skin might bo lifted from
its placo and made to adhere In an ad
joining spot, provided its connection
with tho surrounding skin woro not
cut off. But now wo can go farther
than this. In 18C0 a French physician
discovered that small bits of sound
skin might bo snipped off and applied
to tho surface of tho sore, and thnt
under cortaln conditions they would
adhoro and form now centers from
which the process of healing might go
on.
In order to have a graft "tako" well,
tho surfaco of tho ulcer must bo In a
suitable condition. If It Is rough, or
discharges too freely, or projects too
far abovo tho surrounding level, thoro
is danger that tho small bits of skin
will fall off.
Tho process Is as follows: Tho sur
faco of tho ulcer, as well as that of tho
Bound skin from which the grafts aro
to bo taken, having been carefully
cleansed with carbolic acid, or othor
solution that servos tho same purposo.
tho bit of Bkin Is picked up in a small
pair of forceps or on tho point of a
neodlo, and is snipped off with a pair
of sharp scissors or a small knlfo.
Only tho superficial layer of skin is
taken, and if this is properly done
thoro is no bleeding.
The bit of skin, which is gonerally
not larger than tho head of a pin. Is
then placed firmly upon tho ulcer,
with tho cut side down, and preferably
about a quarter of an inch from tho
free border. A lino of grufts may bo
placod at equal distnnces completely
across tho denuded surface, and thus a
bridge of skin is soon formed, for tho
grafts spread and unite, and thus con
vert the original ulcer into two smaller
onos. Hy a similar process these two
parts may be again divided, and tho
process continued till tho wholo sur
face is covered.
In a fow instances larger portions of
skin have boon inado to grow to tho
ulcerated surfaco. but in general tho
smaller bits cuuso repair to go on as
rapidly, and aro moro easily applied
and cared for. Youth's Companion.
TOWED BY A TARPON.
How Two Men mill 11 Heavy Hunt Were
Carried Alone by a I'lsh.
Tho other rod lay between mo and
my boatman, undor his supervision. I
was reeling in my lino after a short
abortive cast, when suddenly l'iorco
made an exclamation, and I turned to
seo his lino running out rapidly, so
rapidly in fact that the handlo of tho
reel knocked a pioco out of his fore
finger. Ho reached mo tho rod, and
just aflor 1 had seized it, taking caro
to exort no pressure, a large silvery
mas leaped out of tho water straight
into tho water and foil back again.
"A tarpon, and a big fellow," cried
Plorce.
In considering any statement as to
tho height a fish jumps out of
water, it is important to know whether
tho narrator has included tho length
of tho fish in making up his figures.
That is to say, if a fish Is six feot, long
and jumps from Its native element so
thnt tho tip of its tail is two foot clear
of tho surfaco. good story-tellers will
claim that it has jumped eight feet out
of water. Others will tako oath to
only two. It is sutllcieut to state that
tho tarpon in question jumped either
two feot or eight, according to tho in
dividual preference of tho reader. At
that timo ho had taken out with veloci
ty about fifty yards of lino; tho leap
terminated his first rush, and I had an
opportunity to reel In about a fourth
of tho amount before ho started off
again. Meantime my man had hauled
up the anchor and wo woro In
process of bolng towed by tho big fish,
whoso frantic efforts to escape woro
making tho rool rovolvo at a fumous
rate. From long experience with sul
mon, I know enough to keep tho point
of my rod as high as possible consist
ent with tho heavy strain, and tho mo
ment tho rush diminished in intensity
I clapped my finger on to tho leather
drag and resisted stoutly, rooting in
every inch of lino that I could recover.
But beforo long ho was off once moro
in mad career, and out of wator vi
ciously shaking his hood in determined
efforts to spit out tho hook. His fall
uro to do this after a series of endeav
ors showed that ho had swallowed tho
bait, and that my chlof concern now
should bo as to tho strongth of my,
tacklo. Scribnor's Magazine.
