    THE DARKY DUCKED IN TIME.

War, iiihI It Served tl tin Well.
From where we sat on the tavern veranda
wo could look right across the Mississippi
river, although nt the edgo of the river on
Dur side there wns a bluff -iO feet high, with
& strong current bolovv. All nlong this bluff
wero commons, and wo had an unobstructed
view. We were talking and smoking when
e goat came around tho corner of an old
Abandoned warehouse and began to feed
toward us. Five minutes later an old whito
Ueaded darky, usiug a cane to help him
along, enmo out from behind tho same waro
bouso and stood almost on the edgo of tho
bluff, and appeared to gaze across tho river.
"Whnt n fat tako that goat has got, if ho
only knew it I" whispered ono of the party.
"What a fool of a nigger to take such a
riikl" growled a secoud.
Wo ought to have warned tho old man,
who seemed totally unsuspicious of danger,
but we didn't. Human uaturo is just that
way. Ho had been thero two or three min
utes when tho goat observed him and began
to twitch his tail. It was nono of his busi
ness that tho man was there, and no law com
pelled him to kick up a fuss, but we all saw
that ho meant to do it. As ho gathered for a
run every man rose up to warn tho victim,
but no warning was uttered. It was human
nature to want to see tho fun. Tho goat shot
away like a Hash, and ns ho drew near ho
mado a long jump to givo full force to the in
tended blow. Next instant both hud disap
peared, and wo ran down expecting to seo
them struggling in tho muddy waters. As
ws reached tho bluffs the old man roso up
from a pit dug within two feet of tho edgo,
and grinned and lifted his tint and said:
"Mnvvnin', gem'len. 'Spected to And mo
down dar', I reckon."
Ho pointed to the goat, which was swim
mind wildly about as tho current carried it
down, nnd one of tho party replied:
"Yes, wo certainly thought you wero a
goner. You dropped in there, eh 1 You must
havo been pretty quick about it."
"Wall, sorter, but dat was no trick at all.

The prolongation of human life, the
