no'cr shall fail, and thus far wo have
had market for it all. Still we are not
unmindful of tho great impetus that
will bo given to trndo and commerce
by tho construction of a competing
I railroad, and still further, tho men af
flicted with tho rail mania, arc not
limited to tho present decade. There
is more than one Hunt, and tho peoplo
of Union can live as their fathers have
lived, without being torn and worn by
nervous doubts and uncertainties! Wo
do not propose to pin our hopes of life
to one financial enterprise. When the
great business world look's through its
business glasses, tho lens will surely
magnify tho natural resources of Un
ion, so that the arteries of trade will
enlarge with a'fullnees and vigor not
to bo obtained by any false or forced
premises. Wo can bide our time, and
the history of all countries shows that
if a region has undeveloped resources,
sooner or later tho magic wand of en
terprise and thrift will wave over all
surrounding agencies.
Wo believe tho Hunt road will be
built. We bclievo tho advantages re
sulting to Union county will be almost
innumerable, but should it not lo con
structed, wo propose to continuo to
plow and plant, and publish to the
world, thatjor salubrity of climate, fer
tility of soil, extont and richness of
mines, wo have few equals and no
superiors.
In addition to these generalities wo
claim that wo havo other arguments
to bring to bear upon tho projectors of
this great railroad connection with the
extreme northwest, which they cannot
ignore. Our mines aro being rapidly
developed and aro demanding uu out
let. They must have an outlet, and
aro not fully willing to depend upon
tho tender mercies of Portland dicta
tors. Potween Sparta, Cornucopia and
Sanger there aro millions invested.
Union is on tho line of that outlet, and
when tho Hunt road roaches Union it
will be pushed on through these min
eral belts, and southeastward towards
tho center of our continent. Then the
Sound will bo reached at the north
west, and a grand continuous line, em
bracing commercial, agricultural and
mining resources will be established.
Such is tho Hunt system, or a part
thereof.
