THE OREGON SCOUT.
AMOS K. JONES
EUITOIt,
City and County Official Paper.
Thursday, October 3, 1889.
nsnimrm
UDlTOltlAIi XOTi:S.
"WliiKiR Coi.mns, the novelist, died
n London, September 28, 1889, nt the
jigc of sixty-four years.
AjlJncHsh lady who died recently
q lcfp50,000 to be devoted to photo-
.piling tnc stars, piuncisanu ncuuiiu.
K Otudok Gkofk, of Omaha, has been
0 Appointed commissioner of the general
. janu omcc, Vico JjUinor in. mocKsinger
resigned.
A. N. Gii.hkht has been appointed
postmaster at Salem. This, in tho es
timation of the Valley Record, means
John Minlo for United States marshal
for Oregon.
Tin: Portland World is getting early
in tho field, nnd has nominated Sylves
ter l'cnnoycr for Governor and lion,
W. II. Uiggs, of Sherman county, for
congress. Tho World knows u good
man whan it sees him.
All signs point to tho election of
tho democratic ticket in both Montana
and Washington. Tho two Dakotas
nro nothing but the property of tho
railroads, so there is no hope for their
redemption. Thoy will cast their
votes on tho sido of boodlo and plu
tocracy. Tin: following is a dciination of the
tariirpublished in tho Uoston Trans
cript: "It is a compact under which
tho people agrco to slarvo rather than
eat tho fruit that hangs over tho wall
between themselves and their neigh
bors gardens, in order that Farmer
Jones, down at tho Corners, may get
a big prico for his apples."
In Chicago a tedious farce is going
on to securo a jury to try tho murder
ers of Dr. Cronin. As Chicago is a
largo city, it is probable that in tho
course of timo a dozon men will be
found who aro ignorant enough to
comply with tho law. Whoro tho
highest intelligence is needed it is ri
diculous that there Bhould bo this pro
longed search for ignorance to try a
case. Ex.
A Philadelphia soap man, who him
self mado a fortune clearly on adver
tising, says it would pay a half a dozen
papers of big circulation to take up
any pauper from tho street, establish
him in any business under tho sun,
no matter what, and give him a col
umn of advertising every day free for
a year. Then, ho said, tho papers
would show by practical object lesson
to tho advertisers the tremendous oflbct
of advertising, because the pauper thoy
took ofl' tho street would then bo a
millionaire.
Tin: long contemplated suit to bo
brought against tho dillorcnt wagon
road and land companies and numer
ous corporations and individuals, to
dcclaro forfeited millions of acres of
granted land in Oregon, alleged to
have been obtained through fraud, ban
at last been begun in tho United States
district court at Portland by District
Attorney MoArthur, who has been
many weeks in proparing his bills of
complaint. Tho parlies defendant
number eight corporations and sixty
oight individuals, and tho suit piom
iscs to bo one of tho most vigorously
contested cases in tho federal courts
for many years.
Tin: recent mooting in Salum of
many reform organizations for tho
purpose of organizing a new patty suc
ceeded to tiio satisfaction of tho prohi
bitionists. It seems tho majority of
tho representatives of all tho trades,
unions, parties and isms in attendance
wero strongly in favor of prohibition
and prohibition was tho main feature
of tho permanent organization. As to
what oll'cet this new "party" will have
in statu politics will bo ascertained at
tho general election in Juno of next
year. No doubt this now "reform par
ty" will nominate a full state ticket
and many full county tickets will be
placed before tho voters at tho next
election.
Tllli l'UTtlKH.
Notwithstanding the partial failure
of crops in Eastern Oregon and Wash
ington this season, says the Times
Mountaineer, tho prospeotH for anoth
er year aro as bright us in any portion
of tho United States. This is tho first
misfortune in tho shape of drouth that
Iiuh happened in tho inland empire
since it lias boon settled by white men
over a quarter of a century. Thero
Wi no reason to U-lii u tn ' v. toi'.l
again happen in the same- length of
time and no one should be discou
raged. Tho loss this year, by the exer
cise uf enterprise, can bo easily ovi
come, and in this way it may n :
an incentive to our retarded uVvi lop
mcnt. For year?, without any tl!"it
apparently to counteract the influence,
tho tide of immigration from tho
eastern states has been drifting toward
eastern Washington and the Willam
ette valley. If wo will me business
sagacity next year we will receive
largo accessions to our population
from this source. Our lands are as
fertile and we have vast areas un
occupied as any in the Northwest
and home-seekers would gladly settle
in our midst if they know the advan
tages which wo possess. This knowl
edge should be spread broadcast and
every dollar so spent will bring ten in
return. In this regard wo should
follow tho example of our neighbors
who have been reaping a rich harvest
of immigrants while wo have lain
dormant. All kinds of literature
newspapers, pamphlets and circulars,
should bo sent to largo 'eastern cities
and profusely scattered f among all
clatses of people. Cold winters, cy
clones and buzzards, and all over
taxed soil have forced the, industrious
to look elsewhere for home. If we
desiio them, information of our u
eourcos should bo givjm and thoy will
come. On tho contrary, if wo do not
want tho industrious claeies of Ameri
cans as adjuncts to our growth, tho
efforts will be a waste of energy, and
contrary to tho principles of economy
in all kinds of labor which wo prize so
highly.
