SUMMER COMPLEXION.
How rale, Delicate Women Can i:nlly
llonutlfr Thenmelic.
To bo fashionable in theso days it is
necessary to bo healthy, and the pale,
dclicuto plrl that has reigned for so
many years must give place to her
more robust sister. The complexion
most admired is the ono having the
most healthful glow, and in no other
way can this bo obtained than by fre
quent physical exercise in tho open
air. Indeed, many girls when away
for the summer almost live in tho open
air, returning In the fall with com
plexions tho envy of more conservative
maids, who are afraid of tho least bit
of sun.
The sun is a wonderful beautifier of
the complexion, but, llko many good
tonics, ought not to bo taken in too
large doses at first. Going from tho
city, where, oven when walking nut,
wo take the shady sldo of a street, di
rectly Into tho glare of a noonday sun
in tho country Is of all things to bo
avoided. In fact, tho noonday sun is
penetrating oven to very healthy coun
try people, and it is not advisable to
seek It too often, even for the sako
of tho complexion. Tho morning and
afternoon sun will do all that Is de
sired in this respect.
Some fair-skinned peoplo aro pro
vented from enjoying tho country,
owing to getting so easily sun-burned.
Always carry with you into tho coun
try a liberal supply of baby powder.
When going out into tho sun apply tho
powder thickly over tho face and neck,
and there is little danger of your suf
fering from this painful affection. Tho
powder protects tho pores of tho skin,
which aro generally very sensitive to
the sun. If the powder Is not con
venient, corn-starch or powder will
answer tho same purpose. When go
ing out on the water sailing or fishing,
powdering tho faco will save much pain
and annoyance, for there are few places
in which a person burns so quickly as
on tho water.
When sun-burned batho tho aflllcted
parts in cream, but if obtainable, but
termilk is much more cooling and heal
Jng. Tan can be removed by applying
lemon juice to the ace just before re
tiring for tho night, letting it remain
over night, and washing it olT with soft
warm water in tho morning. A few
drops of tho spirits of camphor in tho
wash water two or three times a week
will help to keep tho skin clear.
A good wash for the skin during tho
summer is made as follows: To ono
quart of rose water add, drop by drop,
stirring nil tho time, ono ounce of
tincture of benzoino. Remember that
it is benzoino, and not bonzlne. Bot
tle for use. Add a few drops of this
to tho wash-water each day, until tho
water is like skim-milk, and tho skin
may bo kept soft and nice, ovon
though you aro out in all sorts of
weather.
To protect tho backs of tho hands,
which aro generally tho first to freckle
or tan, tnko your old Usio-throad
gloves that aro worn in the fingers,
cut off the tops, turn and hem on tho
inside each finger. These can bo worn
in the fields, and aremoro comfortable
than tho whole gloves, bosidos pro
tecting tho hands. Hoston Budget.
FACTS ABOUT INSOMNIA.
l-'roquently It N ChimpiI by Utter Luck of
Domestic KecreHtlon.
Are you nflllcted with Insomnia? Per
haps you have too much time for sleep.
Perhaps you depend too much on sleep
for rest and recuperation. For sleep
is not tho solo rest of tho used-up
nerves. Sociability, congeniality and
the enjoyment of good" company rest
tho body quito as much as sleep. Tho
dreary monotony of life in many a
household, involving this tumbling Into
ted with tho mechanical regularity of
a machine at nino or ten o'clock in tho
evening, does not always rest weary
bodies. "Karly to bud and early to
rise" does not always mako a man
healthy, wealthy or wise. Numbers of
organizations aro only capablo of fivo
or six hours sleep at a time, and thoir
early lying down to rest is often suc
ceeded by an early waking up and a
consequent restless tossing for hours
preceding daybreak. Tho practicers
of punctuality arj often surprised after
breaking their own cast-iron rules
and passing two or three later hours of
mirth or jollity past thoir usual bed
time, to find themselves even moro re
freshed in tho morning than usual.
Tho relaxation of sociability has rest
ed them moro than sleep would or an
attempt to sleep. But those aro condi
tions not so easily reached in tho aver
ago family. In fashionable life wo
havo a formal, exhausting, mechanical
evening of moro or less dissipation.
On tho other hand, the evenings in
great numbers of families aro monoto
nous humdrum. They involvo the
assemblage of tho same peoplo,
tho same surroundings, tho samo
paterfamilias yawning over his paper,
and tho same quorulous mamma
overladen with family caros. Frosh
people with frosh thought, fresh at
mosphere, any thing to stir up and
agitato tho pool of domestic stagnation,
aro sadly needed and Sadly scarce.
Thero needs to be also a constant suc
cession of such frosh peoplo to bring
about these results. Tho world is full
of men and women, and In a better
regulated llto it would be their busi
ness ufter tho clay's work was done to
entertain each other and glvo each
othor fresh life. As it Is now, hun
dreds if not thousands of our house
holds aro little bottor than colls for tho
Incarceration of ouch family. Thou
Hands are thufc worn out prematurely
from utter lack of domestic recreation.
Thero might bo written over thogravos
of hundreds of thousands: Bored to
deatli by the btugnatlou of domestic
life.'' -Christaln at Work.
