    VANDERBILT'S KITCHEN.
Where a S 10,000 Clicf Prepares Food In
SIlrri-.ItitMl Conking Utensils.
Mr. W. K. Vnndorbilt'a chof has bad
Buch ronown that the tcmplo in which
ho moves ind tho altar at which ho
officiates must bo of interest. Both
aro worth his cost to import and worthy
his talents. Mr. Vnndorbilt's kitchen
is really very beautiful to the oyo. Tho
purity of marble, tho luster of tiles
and tho gleam of mbtal aro what one
sees. Tho lloor is of marb'e, the
cholves, tho tables, tho sinks, all the
things that aro rarely moved aro of
marblo and cut with tho precision of
jowols. Tho walls aro lined with
croam enameled tiles and all the angles
aro covered with brass mouldings.
Whore theso moot tho doors and win
dows thoy aro covered with these metal
moldings, dispensing oven with wood
on trim. Tho ceiling is made of whito
enamelod tiles sot in comont. lint one
does not imperil tho head of a $10,000
cook with a loosoly-sot brick, so each
tilo is also secured with raised metal
bolts.
Accenting all
this gleam of whito
and metal is the
largo doublo range.
It is sot in one
corner under a largo
semicircular hood enriched with em
bossed copper ornaments nnd swung
from iron bars wrought in spirals and
foliations. This hood is so powerful
an agent in carrying off the odor and
greasy steam that it will waft from
tfio hand a newspaper hold under It.
The coking utensils aro in keeping
with all this splendor. Thoy aro of
copoer with wrought-iron handles,
many of thorn ornamented, and somo
of them have been copied from special
pieces in tho Cluny and other mu
seums. Luxurious cooking utensils are
indeed tho tiling of tho moment, and a
wedding present not disdained is
ft set of copper silver-lined, such
as aro now displayed among gems
and gold at tho jewelers.
Leading from tho kitchen to
tho butler's pantry aro spiral stairs
entirely inclosed in glass to shut out
possiblo odor, yet retain the light.
And this is so successfully dono that,
although the kitchen is directly below
tho dining-room and butler's pantry,
nothing disagreeable makes its way
aloft.
Before referring to another attach
ment of this kitchen, allusion should
be made to tho drains and hoso outlet
in tho center of tho marblo iloor, for it
is by a hoso which may play fearlessly
in any part of tho room that the
kitchen is kept clean. Connected with
tho kitchen, and built under tho sido
wallt, is a scries of vaults. Theso are I
for ice. meat, vegetables, milk and
eggs, and are built in three sections of
hollow masonry, that they may be
kept free from damp, and have perfect
ventilation. The heavier articles,
bhcIi as ice and meat, aro put in
through tho sitlowalk with derrick and
hoist, which relieves the kitchen of a
good deal of unpleasantnoss, as every
housekeeper may imagine. X. Y. Lot

Bouie Useful Suggestion About the Cure
mill Truliilng of Children.
All children possses imagination in
n greater or less degreo, and in the
management of tho nursery this faculty
may be ranked among tho important
ones. In trilling matters where no real
principle is involved 1 always consider
tho easiest way is tho best way. as, for
instance, this morning, when my throo-yoar-old
girl took it into her head not
to bo dressed as usual, and curling her
tiny pink toes beneath her gown de
clared mischievously sho "wouldn't
have any 'tockin's on at all."
For a minuto I was nonplussed. Baby
had not been well for several days and
was just in tho humor to rebel vigor
ously against inforced ohedionce. Pa
pa was in tho sound morning sleep
that befits a night worker, a cry
must bo avoided, if possible, so as a
thought struck mo 1 hold tho small
stocking invitingly open, and said,
pleasantly: "Tho naughty littlo foot
said it wouldn't go into this stocking,
but tho stocking said I'm going right
ou that foot to keep it warm all day,
and tho stocking wont right on," as
mire enough It did, whilo baby looked
up with a laugh and tho question:
"What other 'tockin' say, mamma?"
and the ditlieulty was over, though
each article of clothing had to say
something as it was put in plnco.
Long ago I dovisod a somewhat sim
ilar method for nail-cutting and hair
combing processes, neithor of which
glvo mo any troublo, though somo of
my more prosaic neighbors, who do
not "beliovo in such things," havo n
continual howl from beginning to ond
of tho operation. My oldest was
an only child for several years,
and a very delicato one, so
in winter sho was housed a
good deal, but I had scarcoly any
ditlieulty, for imaginary playmates
visited us for weeks at a time, assist
ed in tho doll-housekeeping, slept and
alo with her and gavo her as much
linppinoss as real ones could havo done.
Sho was a timid child, disliking to go
inton dark room or upstairs alone, so
I mndo uso of tho imagination that
caused tho fear to aid in conquering It,
for sho would cheerfully go any whoro
as long as tho protended visitor ac
companied hor.
A capricious nppotito that refuses a
plain slice of bread and butter will
relish tho snmo if cut into small squares
and called "caramols," as I know from
oxporlouce; and so in a thousand and
ono ways a mother can uso hor child's
imagination as a factor for good In ita
education, and by ingenious devices
roly upon It to assist hor in various
nursery dilemmas. Cor. I'liiladelplu

Marvelous Feat of Memory.
Mnrotus tells us, and had tho state
ment solemnly attested by four Ve
netian noblemen of undoubted honor,
how in Padua ho mot a young Corsican
who had gono thither to pursue his
studies at tho university. Having
heard that tho young man was gifted
with an extraordinary momory, so that
ho could retain and rcpont as many as
8G.O0O words, road over by him once
only, Maretus and somo distinguished
friends asked if ho would allow them
to test tho accuracy of what report hod
stated. Ho willingly consented, nnd
thoro was road over an almost inter
minable list of words, strung together
without any consocutivo moaning, in
every variety of languago, ovon many
of thorn mora gibberish. Tho young
Corsican stood all tho whilo with his
attention dcoply fixed and his eyes cast
down upon tho ground. Whon it was
timo ho looked up choorfully and re
peated tho wholo uninteresting cata
logue of words without a singlo fault.
Thon to show how carofully ho re
tained every word, ho wont through
tho list backward, thon taking every
altornato word, first, third, fifth, etc.,
till ho quito tirod out and porfostly
satisfied Maretus that ho was tho most
extraordinary man ho had met in all
bistrayols.-r.London Public Opinion.

THE" AMERICAN CROW.
How Ills Several Our Differ from l'.nch
Other.
Iam sorry tho charnctor ot tho crow
is so irretrievably bad, for thero is
much that is interesting about him.
In somo respects ho is ovon useful. Ho
acts to somo extent as a scavenger, ho
eats a fow grubs in tho meadows and
pastures, and is said to bo in much de
mand occasionally for furnishing forth
tho tables ot disappointed, disgrunt
led politicians. His glossy, bluo
black color is lino enough to givo a
certain beauty to his somewhat un
gainly form. But tho chief point of
interest about him is his voice, which
on certain occasions is wonderfully ex
pressive and human. If you como
suddenly upon tho place where a com
pany of marauding crows are commit
ting their depredations the one that
has been placed as sentinel will fly
over vour head on discovering you,
crying ha! ha! ha! with a force of ex
pression which Kdwin Booth could
scarcely equal. Ho gives the "h"
sound with a strong aspiration and
prolongs the vowel sound to givo it its
full force. "11a! ha! ha!" ho will cry
from above tho streets with startling
effect, just as if he had caught you in
some villainy, and just as you might
say the same word if you had caught
some one else in a villainy, ami at first
blush he will make you feel as if you
yourself were the culprit 1 know ol

His call to his mate is the syllable
conk, eotik. couk, conk, usually four
times repeated. But his faculty of
speech seems to be limited to tho vowel
sounds aw and ou and tho consonant
sounds h, k and r. In this respect ho
is by no means equal to somo ot his
foreign relations. I Io is, however, a
much smarter bird than his English
cousin, thu rook, but unfortunately his
smartness 'ill runs to mischiof.-
