Horrible Punishment Inflicted on
Exiles in Siberia.
Living and Dying In Cluilni Scourged,
Starvotl mill Frozen Tim I;it of 11
Human Viilturu Half Has Not
lluun Told.
Alexander HiiranolT, who wsis u Rus
sian ar my ollicor, and who was sen
tenced to Siberia for alleged complic
ity in revolutionary schemes, spoke to
a Boston Advortisor reporter as fol
lows: "Were it not for tho charity of the
people of Russia and Siberia no con
vict would ever live to seo the end of
his journey. Tho charities of tho City
of Moscow, from whicti so many pris
oners start for Siberia, aro groat. Jt
is tho custom of tho convicts to chooso
one of their own numbor as foreman
when about to start on their long jour
ney. When our company of eight
hundred men and women, escorted by
tho soldiers Avith fixed bayonets, left
Moscow our foreman went up and
down tho lines of peoplo gathered to
witness our departure. Ho collected
alms from I he crowd, the money be
ing put into bags and carried along to
tho first station, where it was divided.
Tho amount collected was so great
that every man had twenty-seven dol
lar". "Tho Government does not interfere
with this alms-giving on the part of
tho people. In every little town
through which you pass each villager
takes off his hat and crosses himself,
and throws in a penny for the benefit
of tho 'poor unfortunates,' iw tho con
victs aro termed by tho people.
"All that tho American peoplo have
heard and read about tho sufferings
endured by the prisoners exiled to Si
beria is true. Tho half has never been
told. Tho soldiers in Siberia have a
name for tho convicts which well ox
presses their condition. It may be
translated freely us 'you are dead but
tt buried.' This is tho truth. It is a
living death.
"Typhoid fever is the worst scourge
of the exiles. More convicts die of
that than of any other cause. Itcould
not be otherwise. Tho indescribable
filth and frightful atmosphere of the
crowded sleeping-places at tho sta
tions along tho route aro steady and
sure breeders of tho disease, which
makes dreadful ravages among tho
prisonors. Tho fever, broke out
among us when wo were at Tobolsk,
and tho prisoners died at tho rato of
thirty or Jrty a day. I was sick with
tho fevor myself. Tho prisonors re
ceived medical attendance, such ns it
was. Tobolsk was a groat stopping
placo for transients, and at that timo
there were throo thousand convicts
confined in various barracks opening
upon a largo inclosuro which wits
strongly fortified.
"Anothor thing from which the con
victs sillier in Siberia is tho cold. Tho
cold of a Siberian winter is intenso,
and the convicts on tho lino of march,
unablo to walk f'ist and keep their
blood in circulation because of their
chains, sudor much. I romembor one
day, near tho City of Tara, in the
Province of Tobolsk, when it was so
frosty that some of tho baggago horses
ovon lay down and died. Wo lost
three women and fivo men that day,
who, chilled through and through by
tho dreadful cold, succumbed and died
in tho road, their bodies being picked
up and brought along to tho next sta
tion. "Somo of tho prisonors died in this
wny every week, especially in the
Uratski steppe, nnd yet it was only tho
ordinary Siberian winter.
"Convict life in tho mines of Siberia
is woll illustrated by our dally routine
nt tho gold mines of Nerchinsk. Wo
got up at four o'clock in tho morning
and had a breakfast of black bread
and a bowl of gruol. We worked in
the mines till noon and then had din
ner, consisting of more gruol and black
bread, and also a piece of moat. Tho
meat was often horse meat, nnd young
horse, lot mo toll you, isn't half bad,
especially if you aro a prisoner in
Siberia.
"Wo worked in the mines again un
til dark. Supper consisted of cabbago
or somo other kind of soup, meat
vory two or three days, potatoes or
other vegetables, which were fre
quently rotten, and black bread. In
the mines we worked in true miner
fashion with pick nnd shovel nnd lamp
on hat. Wo still wore our chains.
They nover camo off. Tho convict
had to livo in them nnd dio in thorn.
"Such n life, of fourse, sooner or
Inter, caused tho death of many con
victs. Tho political prisonors,mnny
of whom were of high rank and totally
unused to manual labor and to such a
diet nnd manner of living, suffered tho
most nnd succumbed generally tho
fastest Tho ordinary offenders,
thieves, common malefactors, etc,
who came from tho lower classes,
stood prison lifo much better, for it
more nearly resembled in its diet and
daily toil their former lifo. I have
known ordinary offenders, men from
tho lower classes, who .voro stout nnd
strong, who had lived and worked in
tho mines for twenty years.
"The women prisoners at tho mines
were employed in scrubbing, washing
and clothes-making. Tho delicately
nurtured ladies among them who were
political offenders did not generally
live long.
"Somo of tho severities practiced
upon convicts in Siberia aro justified,
it must bo said. Many of tho convicts
aro the worst sort of humanity, in
cluding murderers, thieves, highway
men and all kinds of offenders. We
had ono murderer in our community
who had killed twenty-seven men.
"The political prisoners were forced
to mingle with this class of convicts,
somo of them tho dregs of humanity.
In our company of eight hundred
which left Moscow there were forty
eight political prisoners, four of whom
wero women. Sixteen of us were tho
officers of tho Shlcselburg Regiment,
who had been court-martialed for al
leged complicity with Polish conspir
ators. Three of us officers stuck to
gether and worked together and finally
escaped together. 1 do not know what
over became of tho others. I suppose
thoy aro all dead by now.
"There is only ono chance in one
hundred of ever getting back to Russia
when ono is onco sent to Siborn, for it
a convict is suspected of having further
political schemes it dostroys his hope
of a pardon.
".Many of tho convicts, as I have
said, aro desperate men. Hero is a
story of the rovengo somo of them
took upon a Siberian who had mur
dered somo of their numbor. This
Siberian was ono of tho Mongolian
raco called Rratski, and ho had a
farm about two hundred versts from
Nerchinsk. It lay in tho way by which
convicts escaping from tho mine gen
erally passed. 'I ho region was mostly
a dry desert, but this Uratski farmer
had a good woll of water which at
tracted tho convicts, especially the
green ones who had never heard ol
him.
"I was this farmer's custom to call
to a convict whom ho saw passing by
wearing a good pair of shoes or a
good coat and enlico him within
reach, and then shoot him from a
round hut which ho had loop-holed nil
i jout. lie killed and robbed a num
ber of convicts in this way.
"Ono day a party of soventoen con
victs went by tho farm, and somo of
tho younger ones wore for stopping.
Tho moro experienced convicts dis
suaded them from doing this, saying
that they would surely bo shot. Ry
means of a stratagem fivo of tho con
victs captured the f armor unarmed
and away from his loop-holed hut
Then tho best moans of putting tc
deatli the murderer wore discussed.
Somo wero for hanging him. but one
convict said: 'I'll show you a better
way than that.' Tho farmer's legs
wero ripped up with a knife from the
insido of tho anklo and a lot of finely
chopped horse-hair was rubbed into
tho wounds. Tho hair was obtained
from tho tail of a horso, which was
cutoff. Tho finoly cut hair irritated
tho wounds much and put tho victim
in groat agony. Tho convicts at
Nerchinsk later heard, through the
convict system of signs and communi
cation, which is spread all over Siberia,
lK:o tho tramp language in this coun
try, that tho farmer died of his wounds.
"I romombor a convict at Nerchinsk
named lititouskti. who was un unruly
fellow and often brought punishment
upon himself. Ho used to got two
hundred or three hundred lushes at a
timo for stealing from tho other pris
onors. Upon ono occasion ho was
punished for somo misdeed by being
thrown into a dark collar, the inten
tion being to keep him there for two
hours. Rut tho ovorscor, who was a
drunken fellow, forgot him, and he
was not released.
"During tho night tho other con
victs heard an awful yelling coming
from tko collar into which Butouska
had been thrown. In tho morning
there was nothing to bo scon in tho
collar but Rutouska's bones. Tho rats
had eaten tho rest of him.
"I can recall many acts of cruelty to
tho prisoners. I remembor ono politi
cal prisonor, a young man of high
rank who had been a Captain in my
own regiment. lit. was much beloved
by us all. Weak und run down by tho
hard lifo of tho mines, ho found him
Belf utterly unable to work ono day,
nnd when thoy tried to mako him koop
at it ho refused and declared ho could
not. Ho was taken to tho hospital,
where he died, being kept without u
mouthful of food for twenty-four
hours."
The uppenrnnco upon news-stands
of a dozen or moro different architect
ural, real estate und similar publica
tions catering to those who aro think
ing of building houses, is a sign of the
increased Interest In homo muking on
the part of tho people. Formerly such
publications had only a limited nnd
t-peclal circulation, and wero never of

The Northern Pacific has received
twenty new colonist sleepers which nre

with gentlemen's toilet rooms in one end
and ladies' room in the, other. In one
end is the Baker fire-proof heater, which

Successive Crops. The proper way to
manage a garden plot is to keep some
crop growing in it from spring until the
frosts appear lato in the fall. Several
objects will bo gained by so doing,
among thorn tho destruction of all weeds,
a finer condition of tho soil, and a supply
of fruits am! vegetable for tho table, ns
many vegetables grow quickly and give n
supply in a short time after the seed is
planted. As soon as the early peas are
oil late potatoes should take their place,
and early cabbage may be followed by
turnips. If the first crop of radishes are
removed they will make room for string
beans, and kalo can be cleaned oil' for a
later crop of pons. Pens, string beans,
radishes, late beets and cabbage can be
planted at any time, and if proper varie
ties be selected thero is nothing to pre
vent a continual supply. Garden work
can bo made as important now as in tho
spring, and in putting down successive
crops tho weeds will have no chance to
grow. In fact, every additional crop les
sens tho number of "weeds to be killed.
Such crops as lima benus may be grown
nlong tho lino of tho fence, especially if
tho fenco is of wire. To keep tomatoes,
late cabbage, turnips and lima beans in
good growing condition the ground
should be clean, which, of course, benefits
tho crojis nnd keeps down the weeds.
