NORWAY'S TmALDOIVt.
A Conilcnsnl lllatorloitl Iterlew bf trie
tlreatest f Norwf clnn I'oeta.
During the long period that Norway
was united with Denmark (1450-18H)
all official positions in tho country were
almost exclusively hold by Danes, and
it frequently happened that they were ,
totally unfit for their post, and did not j
even understand the language of the i
peasants, j
Less than the many errors and the ,
insolence of these officials was needed
to arouse the independent spirit of the
Norwegian peasantry, who during the j
long union with Denmark never for a
moment had allowed any encroach-1
mcnt upon their independence, which
the feudal right to their farms, in- I
heritcd from their forefathers, had ,
for generations nay, for centuries 1
maintained.
An attempt to bind Norway more
closely to Denmark was mado by in-,
ducing borne of the sons of the old 1
peasant families on the largo farms to ,
Btay for some time iu Denmark. Most
of these farms are found in tho heart of j
the country, and in the Throudhjem
district, and many are found on the j
coast as far up as Nordland. These i
Bons were to bo mado noblemen which
tney, however, thought they already
were. They were at first to go through
a course of military discipline and to
learn "good manners," but the attempt
proved a miserable failure, for tho lads
gave the officers and. their teachers a
sound thrashing, and got up a mutiny,
und had at last to be sent home again.
An attempt to organize a Norwegian
corps of Lifeguards, in attendance
upon the King at Copenhagen, was just
as unsuccessful, and terminated in the
same way. Such occurrences, how
ever, tended to strengthen tho claim of
tho country for national independence.
What was Norwegian could not be
mado Danish; this was gradually being
understood.
Thus the yearning for independence
developed quietly, and soon found a
mouth-piece inthoNorsko Selskab (the
Norwegian Society), a literary gather
ing of Norwegian students at tho Co
penhagen Univorsity; thoir victorious
fisticuffs with their Danish brethren
became in time a spiritual alliance for
tho welfare of tho father-land. The
ancestral pride of these independent
odol-peasants had long boen the nat
ural foundation for this awakening
patriotism; now it also became tho
historical-legal ground for their claim
for political &clf-governmont. In due
time it alt. lined its end, when Norway
in 18M became an independent king
dom. Then the people entered upon a new
era, which quickly dissevered them
from thoir old barbarous customs, and
in which tho natural strength and abil
ity of the people reached to attain
ments which united what hitherto had
boen disunited and hostile.
Under this gradual growth, with self
made laws, and with municipal as well
as national self-government, with an
increasing enlightenment and good
schools, with newspapers, with a liter
ature, with lectures, meetings, political
and social movements, tho people have
made astonishing progress, and under
this nowly awakened life the old-fashioned
religious intolerance has become
au archaism. Hjornstjerno Bjoruson,
in Hnrper's Magazine.
JAY COOKE RICH AGAIN.
Vicissitude of Fortune In tho CHroxr of the
Noted Ilituki-r.
Among the pushing throng of Broad
way to-day was an old gentleman clad
more in the garb of a countryman than
that of a great financier. His clothes
wore plain, and his whito slouch hat
with its broad brim gave hira the ap
pearance of a well-to-do-farmer. The
hair and beard of Jay Cooko is now
snow white, but he still moves along
as if contonted with life. No one
familiar with his every -day appearance
would think he was tho famous banker,
tho man who has handled more mil
lions than any other private individual
in America; failed for more money
than any other, and finally has grown
rich again after ho had grown old.
While he is by no means as familiar a
figure as ho used to bo, and does not min
gle in tho uncertainty of "tho street"
as of yore, he is moro frequently seen
among the bustle of business than al
most any man of his ago.
Jay Cooko has had a singular career.
When tho war broke out ho lived out
along Lake Krie, at Sandusky, and Sal
mon P. Chase, while Secretary of the
Treasury, first gave him a big start in
life, which ho followed to disaster, and
th'on built anew from nothing. Mr.
Cooke never forgot or neglected his
homo in Ohio, and one of his charities,
is a boautlful homo on an island in
Lake Krlo, a few miles from Sandusky,
which he bought and named "Gibral
tar." Ho had it laid out in wild, 1
romantic. walks, nnd built a commodl- j
ous stono castle upon it. ilo provided '
tho houso with ovory imaginable com
fort and put into it a competent houso- I
keeper. To this retreat ho would in
vito each summer ministers of tho gos- 1
pel of different denominations who -could
illy afford to tako a summer
vacation,
Mr. Cooko lives with his aon-ln-law
now, Mr. Barney, who does business
near tho famous "old banking-house on
Third street, in Philadelphia, over
which Mr. Cooko onco presided, and
where tho Northern Pacific railroad
was projected. Iu many respects Jay
Cooko will go down to history as one
of tho romnrknblo men of our time. In
a little church out at Frankfort, near
Philadelphia, ho has a son preaching
to a congregation who can hardly af
ford to pay him Hilary enough to liqui
date hU horso hiro. So tho curious
turns of life are again illustrated In
Mr. Cooke'n caroor and In that of the
family he hfu nilavd. N. V. Letter.
