Wc are informed tlmt a number of our
citizens, who have been annoyed. by per
sons stealing fruit from their orchards,
have agreed upon setting out shot guns
with string attachments so that disturbing
tne tree will tire the gun. This is rather
arbitrary means of protection outside of
standing guard all night. Fruit thieves
will do well to beware from now hence
forth. In sharp contrast to some of our own
citizens who refused to subsoribo to tho
Hunt subsidy are J. W. Wilson and John
Grcon, of Baker county, who subscribed
most liberally to it. These mon are not
only liberal but far-seeing. Although they
live in Baker county tho building of the

probably extending to Baker City, the ben

The liberal lecturer, Mr. Samuel P. Put

evening. It is hardly necessary for us to
call attention to the merits of Mr. Putnam
as a lecturer, as he is well known through
out the length and breadth of the country,
and has visited our city annually for sev
eral years past. He is considered by com
petent critics to be one of the most elo

States, and those who go to bear him may
be sure of being well repaid for doing so.
To those who dillcr with him in opinion he
