Union supplies them with the greater
tion from a certain source which is
a malignant and abusive character,
This opposition comes from corres
pondence in tho Orcgonian and edito
rials in the same paper. It is a well
known fact and a laudable one, that
tho citizens of J'ortland, and the Orc
gonian in particular, use every effort
in their power to bring into Tot-Hand
any and all means of transportation,
bo it by water or railroad communica
tion. That every ellbrt is made to
make Portland one grand railroad cen
ter, thereby teeming to the business
as cheap and low rates of transporta
tion as possibly can be had; thus
making their city tho grand cntorport
and distributing metropolis of, the Pa
cific Northwest. ut when one little
city of loOO wishes to secure to them
selves tho building into their section of
tho county and their city an opposi
tion railroad which in their belief will
lessen thcr rates on freight, build up
their town and secure to them all the
advantages they now enjoy and the

the great Oregonian. . Hut the road is
bound to come sooner or later. With
all this opposition the full amount of
the subsidy will be raised. Mr. Hunt
will build tho road against all opposi
tion of the Oregonian and tho gnash
ing of its tooth. One reason of the op
position of certain parties to tho in
coming of tho Hunt road is, that if tho
road is built tho county seat will not
bo removed and Union will retain ita
prestige, grow and become tho city of
(Jrando Hondo valley.
The fanning country around Union
is equal to that of any in the' county.
The soil is rich ami productive. He
sides wheat, oats ami barley, which
grow and yield abundantly, herd or
timothy grass grows to perfection and
clover is fairly luxuriant, in its growth.
Tho population of Union is about
1500. It has a (ino school property
worth $10,000, tho school building of
brick being two storied A graded
school is maintained with four teach
ers. The average daily attendance is
200 pupils. Tho number of scholars
drawing public money in the district
is 27ir. Tho wages paid the teachers
amounts to $2110 per month in tho
aggregate. Tho value of taxable prop
erty in tho district is 2!K,7l!r. Tho
standard qualilieation of the teachers,
their ellluiency in teaching, enables
tho pupil to obtJiin a thorough com
mon school education. A number of

part of their supplies. There is also a
line of stages which run to the mines
from this place, carrying the mail and
passengers and a large amount of trav
el is daily passing over this route
which is claimed to be the most feasi
bio and nearest route to thes-j mines.
Tho water power of Catherine creek
is sufficient to supply almost an un
limited amount of machinery if only
utilized and it is only a matter of time
when this power will bo used in largo
and extensive manufactories of dill'er-
cnt kinds.
The citizens of Union aro a live and
spirited class of people. This is shown
by their exertions to secure the Hunt
railroad, and the opposition of the
Oregonian to Union and their project
has only stimulated them to greater
exertions and zeal. Success and vic
tory will surely crown their ellbrts; for
win they will in spite of all opposition
