YELLOWSTONE PARK.
A Section AVlicre tho Most Wonderful
Frcnks of Nutiire Are Missed.
In any other country than our owr
tho opportunities of finding such r
eection of hind, whoro nil tho most
wonderful attractions of naturo arc
massed, would havo been impossible.
Tho first real information of Won
derland, with its geysers, its volcanic
formations, its rushing waters, its
canyons, enmo in 1863. Before that,
savo tho vuguo stories of tho trappers,
there was nothing known of tho Yel
lowstone region. Those adventurous
hunters had told tho truth, but thoy
were not believed.
Captain Do Laey's report, written bj
a competont oflleer. at onco attracted
attention. In 1871 Dr. Ilaydon went
to tho Vellowstono region, studied it
in detail, and presented a careful sum
mary of his explorations to Congress.
Above all, Dr. lluydon urged that the
whole section should bo set apart bj
Congress "for the benefit and enjoy
mont of tho people," and this wise
mensuro was carried out in 1872.
Tho Yellowstone National Park lies
in tho northwestern corner of Wyo
ming, with small portions of it extend
ing into Idaho and Montana. Its
length is fij miles, width Co. It con
tains 357o square miles, or 2.228.00C
acres. The lowest level, at Gardiner's
river, is oUGO feet, tho highest, Elec
tric Peak, in the Gallatin range, being
11,155 feot abovo tho sea. Tho aver
ago olovation of tho plateau is from
7500 to 8500 feet. Tho summer days
are hot, tho nights always cool. In the
winter the climata is arctic. Hero the
past changes of this planet, its present
. disturbances, aro visible Tho forcos
Within this "lobo of ours nrsvec urn nt
rest. If through tho funnels of vol-
canoes Mature finds her safety-valves,
in the Ycllowstono Park tho geysers
aro her lesser escape pipes.
Around what is called tho Upper
Basin is tho Beehive, with its cluster
of goysers. One, known as tho Grand,
throws a jet of water 25 feet in diame
ter to a height of 250 feet, and this
superb water-spou has a duration of
not loss than twenty minutes. Thpre
is another famous geyser called Old
Faithful. Geysers aro moro or less
capricious as to thoir .eruptions, and
aro disappointing to thoso who oxpoet
that Naturo carries a stop-watch in her
pocket. Old Faithful is, however, the
most methodical of goysers. Out of
tho cavern beneath him ho draws up
tho water .nnd shoots it into tho air at
regular intervals of every fifty-seven
minutes.
Paint Pots aro small basins about
throo' feet wide, whoro tho escaping
steam finds an exit, and thoy hold in
agitation compounds of siliceous clays,
which aro pink, brown, blue, and gray.
The Pulpit Terraces aro a sories of
singularly beautiful stalacito basins,
containing wator charged with car
bonic acid, which holds in solution
carbonate of lime. As tho surplus
wator trickles over thorn limo is do
posited by evaporation as a solid crust.
Liberty Cap owes its peculiar shape to
tho well-known action of one of nat
ure's solvonts.
There are mnny extinct geysers, but
when they ceased to spout no ono can
toll. Thore is nothing normal about
tho Yellowstone Parle, because it is a
center of volcanic activity. It is Won
derland, and in Wonderland, as far as
tho staid matter-of-fact contours of tho
earth go, there can bo nothing which
is rigid.
Mount Evarts owes its name to a
Mr. Evarts who was ono of tho ex
ploration party that visited tho goysor
basins in 18G!). Mr. Evarts, when near
the head of tho lake, was lost, and only
joined his party after sulToring great
hardships. Not far from Mount Evarts
aro tho Mammoth Hot Springs, which
cover an area of three square miles.
Hero aro terraces glittering in all
colors. Certain portions of tho Yel
lowstone country aro known as "bad
lands." Wherovor volcnnic nctlon of
a recent date has dostroyod tho fer
tility of tho soil, this namo is crivon.
With its suporb lakes, rushing rivors, j
wator-falls, its canyons and goysors,
this Yollowstono National Park is ono
of tho wonders of tho world. Har

Prince Alexander's Shadow.
Now that Princo Aloxnnder of Bat
tenberg has accepted tho consequences
of his marriage, and retired into com
parative obscurity for tho moment, all
tho story of his short, though brilliant,
enreor will bo forgotten; but no one's
lifo has boon moro full of incidents of
romance. Ho was adored by his army,
which would havo followed him to tho
death, and by his own immediate fol
lowers, to whom ho was a real hero in
every sense of tho word. Through his
Servian career ho was attended by a
tall and handsome jaeger, who never
left him for u moment, and who on
many occasions ran great risk of
losing his own lifo In his de
termination not to loso sight of his
master. At night ho slopt on a couch
in tho anto-room outsldo his bed-room,
nnd at least ono plot to assassinate
Princo Aloxandor was frustrated by his
vigilance After Princo Alexander loft
Bulgaria, tho servant who followed his
master disappeared, and tho solution
of tho mystery for mystery it wns to
thoso who know tho Princo was then
discovered in tho fact that tho lintel
Bomo jaeger was a woman in disguise,
who, being madly In love with Princo
Aloxandor, determined to devote her
lifo to guard him from danger during
his stormy rolgn in tho Bulgarian
kingdom. What became of hor was
not known, but sho wns not seen again
with tho Princo after ho loft Sofia.
