Fifteen miles to the southeast of
Jerusalem lies the sullen Dead sea. It
is 1300 feet below tho level of tho
Mediterranean and its shores are hot,
sandy and arid. Tho customs of tho
people change with every new place
in tins Old country. Tho Turks havo
their wild nomadic ways of herding
and plodding back and forth like Ish
mael of old, while the wary Jew jdics
his trades with alacrity and zeal. The
country folks are very low in manners
and ways. Character is with them as
truth is with Bill Nye a scarce article.
In some localities tho country is in
fested with roving bauds of robbers

It is not afo to trust a turk with any
thing. Of all jioojdo in tho world
they are tho most treacherous. Brown
and swarthy, taciturn and sullen, they
jily thoirtrudo with no juolific pomp
or noisy enterprise. What to tho
Turk is pleasure, is to a civilized man
nearly torture. He is peculiar. If ho
finds a custom in his daily routine
that others around him jiraotice, ho
abandons it and moulds for himself
some now mode of action. Ho loathes
society. When he goes for an oveiiit.g
walk, instead of taking a comjmniun,
he stalks oil' alone and sj.oaks nor e
says to look at any one.
