A communication from fc'alem to Tiik
Scout last Week contained the follow in
paragraph:
(ilon. O. llolmau. a cheeky fellow of the
republican party, after being !et down on
for every nthee from Doorkeeper of the
House to Chief Clerk ot the same hotly,
finally "insinuated" himself onto the
Sjcaker. and in order to get rid of him, he
was appointed Assistant Heading Clerk of
the House of Uepresentativcs.
Thinking the writor of the letter would
.tend us' nothing hut facts, we paid hut
little attention to it and it was published.
It seems from the following letter from
prominent members of the House that the
writer was very much mistaken or wrote
what he knew to be false. We hae a
right to expeet that correspondents will
act fairly with us. and should we lind they
have not, we will not shield them in the
least. The. letter is as follows, and fully
exonerates Mr. llolmau from the imputa
tion of the above extract:
Sai.km, Feb. 18, ISM".
Kiutok Onnc.o.v Scout:
The faets are, Mr Holman was clearly
thn choice of the House for second assist

he would be appo'nted to that olllcc, and
should do the reading. Mr. llolmau w.i
not a candidate for anv of the olllees men
tioned above, except the one. to which he
was appointed.

A Silo.
Col. T. II. Cornelius, of this imint.v. l ist
week opened ti p his silo and it was a sur
prise to many to see ho w well the ensilage
had been preservul. With the exemption
of three r four inches on top, the whole
mas was found in a state of perfect preser
vation. This completely removes the
doubts enterta'iU'd by sonio as to the possi
bility f preserving feed by this m thud in
ibis excessively nioNt and warm Miniate.
Col. Cornelius began tilling this silo about
the lirst of last .September and sealed it up
about the llrst of October, so that it re
mained sealed over three and a half
month-). It was tilled with green corn
fodder, cut iuto half-inch lengths, and as
there was no chance for evaporation, the
ensilage still retains all the juice and
moisture which the green corn originally
contained, making a very rich feed the
cattle eating it with great avidity. The
aizc of this silo is Hi feet high. About 200
tons of ensilage were put into it. -Hillsboro

The entertainment and dance given by
Lodge No. '28, Knights of l'ythias, of this
city, last Tuesday evening, was largely
attended, some four or live hundred people
being present. The play was well pro
duced, eliciting much merriment and
rounds of applause from the audience.
Each one of the participants acted his part
admirably and we would like to mention
each one individually, and print in full the
address by Mr. O. F. II el I and the original
poem by Prof Ilackctt, but limited time
siutl space forbids us doing so at this time.
After the entertainment the iloor was
cleared and dancing was indulged in till a
late hour. Eighty-eight tickets were sold,
the proceeds of which will materially aid
the order in its work. Taken all in all the
affair was the most enjoyable we have had
for u long time.
