Washington, Dec. 2.', 188?..
Editor Ojikuon Si-out:
A quieter Christmas, Washington
never saw. After the pushing and
fighting to soil ami to buy holiday
goods, it eame as a blessed relief alike
to ricbind poor. There were very
few big dinner parties, or even family
gut brings. Jn fact, the ideal Christ
mas dinner of Dickons is no more.
The poor relation wanns his heels be
fore bis own tiro, and the bachelor head
clerk seeks a restaurant. The great
turkey bus changed to a canvas back
duck, and tho fragrant plum pudding
and mince pic are relegated into retire
ment. Even the "rounder's" oppor
tunities to get drunk are comparative
ly few. The saloons no longer keep
open all day Christmas to distribute
egg-nog. Nearly all closed at noon,
and thus additional quiet was secured.
Tho 1'rcsidont and Mrs. Cleveland,
walked to church through tho bright
sunshine, and heard the usual Christ
mas sermon, fn tho afternoon they
drovo to Oak View and back, and look
dinner alone at the White House. Tho
only member of tho cabinet not in tho
city, was Secretary Endicott, who ato
an old fashioned New England dinner
in his own state. Tho Whitney family
spent tin) day at Grasslands. Luckily
for tho President, that tho Executive
Mansion was closed to visitors during
tho day, and only Secretary Bayard
called. But tho ghost of the Now
Year leception is in tho Presidential
vision.
Big, round faced Tom Bccd and lit
tle Napoleon faced Win MeKinley, took
advautiigo of the recess to go home,
but tho rest of tho candidates for speak
ership did not stir, but remained to
fight it out, with the congressmen who
remain in tho city as delighted specta
tors. These candidates aro now con
centrating forces against Mr. Reed as
being the most dangerous man. They
say that Mr. Reed's two complimenta
ry nominations havo nothing to do
with tho case. Thoy
has to many personal
own party, made by
iillogo that ho
enemies in his
liis imperious
manner in debate, and that the
coni-
plimentary nominations wore given
grudgingly. On the first ballot tho
chances of the leading fivo candidates
will look well.
1 say leading five, candidates advised
ly, for within tho last two days not on
ly is there "another Richmond in tho
Held," but there aro soveial of thorn.
Now comes Henry Cabot Lodge, of
Mass., who is cursed with youth, but
who has made a good impression in
congress. His candidacy is said to be
really worked up by tho western men,
who know that a vigorous eanvai-s by
Mr. hodgo, would break Mr. Reed's
solid New England vote. As a dark
horso Mr. Farquhar, of Bull'alo, has
hopes that may not bo misplaced. Ho
will depend upon tho Now York in
iluence. Thou Thomas M. Buyno of
Pennsylvania feels a burning desire to
do honor to his stato by oucupying
tho Speaker's chair. And tho returns
aro not yet in from the doubtful states.
Senator Halo's senate census com
mittee is deluged with letters of advice
as to tho next census. Jt is proposed
to ascertain tho length of service of all
survivors of tho lato war, not only of
tho federal but of thoconfedoratonnny.
The census of 1880 gave forth 22 vol
umes. Tho present bill allows for sev
en volumes for tho next census, and
tho sim to bo appropriated, is (i,000,
000, exclusive of oxpenso of printing.
Tho last census did not cost so much,
but new subjects will be introduced,
and tho increased population will
necessitate a greater expense. Tho
population, it is estimated, will bo
found to bo from sixty four to sixty-six
millions. It is a pity that tho bill can
not provide for a superior class of local
enumerators and roasonablo accuracy.
But anjiiecurato census is an impossi
bility. Tho Johnson annex, to tho Arling
ton, contains tho rooms that will bo
occupied by Con. Harrison during in
nauguration. Parlors have been en
gaged at Willard's from which his
family and their party will witness tho
iuuaugural parade. It is customary
for tho retiring President to meet his
successor ni some point, and escort him
to tho Capitol. Mr. Cleveland will
probably tako (ion. Harrison into tho
oarriago ut Willard's. General Harri
son js said not to have decided upon
tho dale of his arrival hero, but it is
expected that ho will not arrive until
a oouplo of days beforo March 1th.
Tho outcome of the Hayti affair, at
least so far as tho present is concerned,
is received with little interest here,
having been to much a foregone con
clusion. Still it is productive of genu
ine pleasure to know that the honor of
tho United States abroad has been
oni'o vindicated. Admiral l.ueo might
not havo had t-o plain bailing, however,
in o water o a groat power.

During an actito attack of Bronchitis, a
ceaseless tickling in tho throat, and an
exhausting, hacking cough, aflllct tho
sufferer. Sleep is banished, and great
prostration follows. This disenso is also
attended with Hoarseness, and some
times Loss of Voice. It is liable to be
ruino chronic, involve tho lungs, and
t riulnato fatally. Aycr'a Cherry Pecto

of Ilronehltis. It controls the disposition
to cough, and induces refreshing sleep.
I have been a practising physician for
twenty-four yearn, and, for tho past
twelve, have suuVred from annual at

Aycr's Cherry Pectoral Is decidedly tho

chronic Dronehitis. and all lung diseases.

I wrw attacked, last winter, with a
severe Cold, which grew worso and
settled on my Lungs. Uy night sweats
I was reduced almost to a skeleton. My
Cough was incessant, and 1 frequently
spit blood. My physician told mu to
givo up business, or I would not livo a
month. After taking various remedies
without relief, I was llnally
Cured By Using
two bottles of Ayer'n Cherry Pectoral.
I am now in perfect health, and able to
resume- business, after having been pro
nounced incurable with Consumption.
S. P. Henderson, Kaulsburgh, l'enn.
For years 1 was in a decline. I had
weal: 'lungs, and suffered from Bron
chitis mid Catarrh. Aycr's Cherry Pec
toral restored me to health, and I have
been for a long time comparatively vig
orous. In case of a sudden cold I always
resort to the Pectoral, and Ibid speedy
relief. Ld ward 13. Curtis, Rutland, Vt.
Two years ago I suffered from asevero
llroncliitis. Tho physician attending
mo became fearful that the disenso would
terminate! in Pneumonia. After trying
various medicines, without henellt, ho
prescribed Aycr's Cherry Pectoral,
which relieved mo at once. I continued
to tako this medicine, and was cured.
