NERVES AND MOODS.
Hf to Serur (looil lldiltli, ."Mental, Spir
itual mill llcxllly.
A nerve is a. wonderful, wonderful
thing. A little white fihunent, some
times so delicate nnil so flno as hardly
to bo vlsiblo when exposed from the
tissue in which it has lived. Exquis
itely sensitive and strangely responsive
to the sentiments of pleasure or pain
which are conveyed through it. this
wonderful thing does its duty and bears
its burdens and shmds the racket im
posed upon it, with u degree of patience
nnd fortitude almost impossible to real
ize. Nothing in nature-is moro marvel
ous than the network of nerves constitu
ting what wo somewhat carelessly will
our nervous system. Each nerve is a
telegraphic cord in itself. Each is a
part of the whole complex and inimita
ble system of telegraphy by which
messages from the headquarters in the
brain are sent to the minute stations in
tho extremities. If this telegraphic
system of nerves were erected on di
minutive poles outside of our bodies, it
would be a most peculiar exhibit. Hap
pily for us, our nervous systems are, as
it were, a harmonious arrangement of
underground wires, carefully buried
within us, and deftly concealed from out
side observation. Wo can not see them,
nor know whether they are too slack or
too tightly strained. Wo can tell when
they are disturbed, for nouralgic agony
shoots along their course from station
to station. When wo are glum, and
dismal, and low-spirited, tho telegraph
ic apparatus is out of order, and tho
nerve forces aro demoralized. When
nerves work wrong, it is as when tele
graphic poles are shaky or wires tan
gled or crossed, or currents irregular,
or batteries confused.
According to tho irregularity of our
nerves, so aro our irregular moods. If
all is right, wo aro happy and cheery
and sunshiny. I5ut let tho batteries
blunder, or currents cross, or tho wires
become entangled, and wo aro irrita
blo, sulky, ill-tempered or angry, as
the case may be. In somo of our dis
tressful moods wo pout, and sulk, and
misinterpret and misunderstand. Wo
take oiTciibu whero no otTenso is in
tended, and wo imputo to others mo
tives which are never conceived by
them. At times when tho moods are
out of sort, wo think tho whole world
is persecuting us, and we, tho atllicted
objects of persecution, are above all
other human creatures singled out for
martyrdom. That this gives us hate
ful and unpleasant feelings toward our
fellow-men is ::ot to be denied. How
can wo help it?
If it were necessary for us continu
ally to abide in such a state of sin and
misery as this, our lot would be hard
indeed. Hut for the most of us it is as
unnecessary as it is for a homo to be
perpetually distracted by a lot of howl
ing and ill-mannered children. Somo
families allow their little boys and
girls to bo in a constant wrangle; to
tell tales on each other, and to whine
for what they want. Others give tho
youngsters to understand that they
must behave themselves decently, or
else go without what they would like
to have. So with tho nerves. Thore
is no more use in letting our nerves
get tho better of us so that wo
have to tell peoplo wo aro
moody, and odd, and queer and
cranky, any moro than there is of let
ting our children turn homo into a
howling desolation. There aro cir
cumstances under which most of us
can without insuperable dillleulty, rise
from tho moodiness which is brought
about by letting tho nerves have their
own way. Mental and physical diet
has much to do with it. Brooding over
real sorrows and imaginary miseries
will make tho best of us moody and
wretched. Nursing grief and alTronts,
nnd tolling the sad story of our woes,
has as depressing an effect as nar
cotic drugs. Sleeping in unventil
uteci rooms often produces chronic
wretchedness, even if theso rooms bo
Tarnished with tho appliances of wealth
nnd refinement. Association with grim
persons is depressing and dispiriting.
Eating greasy or indigestible food at
a table surrounded with grumblers is
enough to upsot our whole inrvi-sys-tom
and throw us into dark blue hor
rors. "Good health." mental, spiritual and
bodily, is worth working for. 11 "tu
out tho malaria of moodiness and .t

is more oasily attained than most folks

J RELIGIOUS AND EDUCATIONAL.
Daniel Hand, of Guilford, Conn.,
gave $1,000,000 to tho American Mis
sionary Association, tho interest to be
used for the education of negroes in the
South.
Tho Japanese Gazette says that
"Buihlhism can not long hold its
ground, nnd Christianity must finally
prevail throughout all Japan. Japan
ese Buddhism and western science can
not stand together. They aro Incon
sistent tho one with tho other.
It is a peculiarity of sin that it
makes tho sinner insenslblo to Its evils.
As a surgeon administers chloroform to
his patient and then amputates a limb,
so Satan deadens tho sinner nnd takes
away tho best part of his manhood,
nnd tho sinner knows it not. United
Presbyterian.
Tho popular preachor who draws
his sermons from fiction may for n
time draw peoplo to listen to his fan
cies. But the preacher who draws his
sermons from the Book of books is tho
one who draws souls to tho Saviour and
salvation. It resolves itself into tho
question: What is tho preacher after,
crowds or converts, fame or faith, rep
utation or regeneration? Standard.
No man is kept from study by lack
of time; yet no excuso for a failuro to
study is moro common than that of lack
of time. A man who studies all tho
timo ho can study, often wants moro
timo than there is; and if thero wore
moro time, ho would uso it. But tho
man who refuses to study becauso ho
has no timo, would not study if ho had
nothing to do but to study. S. S.

What tho Biblo will bo to ono's soul
depends on tho attitude of his soul to
ward tho Book divine. If ho boliovos
it to bo tho Word of God, nnd dovoutly
reads and studies it as such, it will bo
to him tho Book of books. If, on tho
other hand, ho is a cavllcr or a skeptic,
ho will not bo charmed with tho Bible,
and will hardly read it at all. Thero is
a vast difference between theso two nt
titudes of tho mind and heart Ar. Y.
Independent.
Success in tho Christian Ufo ro
quires absoluto promptness. Prompt
ness in performing any religious duty
makes it easy; whilo delay makes it a
cross, and tho longor tho dolay tho
heavier tho cross. Promptness is also
a remedy for idleness, and idleness is
ono of tho Christians1 most dangerous
foes. In no plnco is promptness moro
needed than in resisting temptation, for
unless wo firmly withstand tho tempter
at tho very outsot. wo aro almost cer
tain of dofeat.
WIT AND WISDOM.
No human boing can iomo into this
world without increasing or diminish
ing the sum total of human happiness.
Good sense should bo tho test of all
rule, whether ancient or modern; what-
over is incompatible with good sense is
false.
Thero aro many hours in every
man's life which aro not spent in any
thing important; but it is necessary
that they should not bo passed idly.
Ordinary work will bo well dono
only when conscience is put into it. A
high regard for tho moral sense is not
equivalent of genius, but it comes pretty
near it.
