American judges arc. Lord Coleridge,
commenting on tho fact that the Chief
Justice of England receives .$-10,000 said
several years ago, that his duties were
not bo great as tho!!0 of our Chief .Jus
tice. Tho high honor of the position
nnd a life appointment docs not he
thought, atone for the incagurnuss of
the income.
Judge Kelly is after the chairman
ship of the Ways and Menus commit
tee of the next house, with a determi
nation to1 win. Tho Judge docs not
care who is elected speaker; his am
bition is entirely a'privatoand personal
one. A great deid of side talk is cur
rent about tho old gentleman's age
and tho advisability of his seeking the
pleasant pastures of comparative re
tirement, but no one has been found
with sufficient courago to take tho
Judge aside and tell him about it.
Just now he is a thorn in the side of
tho republican party. It is to bo re
membered that Mr. Kelloy has bolted
party decisions on different occasions.
In tho Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth con
gress, ho voted for the democrats, in
prcfcrcnco to voting for Gen. Garfield
for speaker, and on various occasions
since that timo he has shown an inde
pendent and one might even say an
obstinate spirit. Still tho Judge may
have his ambition gratified. His long
service in the houso gives him an ex
tensive claim.
Senator lidmunds gave tho dictum
of his party as to tho canal discussion
to tho fcenato on Wednesday. The
resolution ho offered and had referred
to the committee on Resolutions, is as
follows: "Resolved, That tho Govern
ment of tho United States will look
with serious concern and disapproval
upon any connection of any European
Government with tho construction of
any canal across tho Isthmus of Dn
ricn or across Central America, and
must regard any such connection or
control as injurious to tho just rights
and interests to tho United States, and
as a menace to their welfare." Tho
President is, by an additional clause,
requested to transmit tho resolution to
tho several governments.
Probably tho most active man in tho
senate bo far as regards questions of so
cial economy is Senator lilair. Ho
seems tirolcsw. On Wednesday ho
called tho attention of congress to tho
necessity of a national sanitary inspec
tor, tho advisibility of legislation ar
resting tho liquor traffic with tho Con
go Freo State, and asked that tho work
on technical education in Europe be
gun by tho American consul at Tun
stall, England, bo continued. And
still pcoplo complain of idle senators.
Tho democratic senators who do not
euro about talking tariff during tho
holidays, seem doomed to disagreement
with their republican nuighbors. Sen
ators Morrill nnd Sherman, represent
ing tho majority, met Senators Harris
nnd Vest, for tho minority on Wednes
day morning; but tho result was unsat
isfactory. Tho republicans propoEed u
recess, to end Jan. 2nd., but tho demo
crats desire a longer recess, and wish
tho Ohristnuis festive board to bo un
shadowed by tho epootro of an inimodi
uto voto on tho tariff. It scorns prob
able that no tariff voto will, therefore,
ho reached before the latter part of
January.
Tho Inaugural eommittco is going
on in tho oven tenor of its way, deal
ing information right and left to all
sorts of curious people ns to tho nr
rangements for visiting Washington in
March. It is not expected that Gen.
Harrison will come here beforo iiinuu
ration, but ns an ndvnnco agent,
Washington will next week have Mr.
Russell Harrison, nnd tho office seekers
arc preparing to tako hjju to their
blasts. I f ho makes any such sensation
hero us in Now York, ho will bo lucky
to t'hcnpo serious injury. Tho number of
hotel rounders who fought with Got.
Harrison, according to their own ac
count, is alone enough to devour young
Mr. liufcsell.
Mr. fiymim, whoso Indianapolis po
litical battles with Mr. Hynuni hnvo

to defeat in his nomination for the
United States Attorneyship in his ju
dicial district. Tho senate committee
will probably report unfavorably as to
