    THE SWISS SCHOOLS.
lYliat tlio American Minister to Swltzer
1 mt Think of Them.
Switzerland lias tho finest system of
public schools in Europe according to
Mr. Winchester, and the peoplo take
great interest In its work, which has
resulted in elevating them to the high
est standard.
Tho Swiss boys and girls onter school
when six years of age, nnd lcavg it
when thirteen. Tho teacher d I tiers
little from the pupil, and they partici
pate aliljp in tho games nnd pastimes,
as well as learn together. There is no
discrimination between tho rich and
poor children, and they attend school
and associate with each other. Tho
schools aro free, and each child is
compelled to attend. Whcnover woalthy
parents send their children to private
schools they aro requested to furnish a
certificate, saying that tho child at
tends tho privato school regularly. At
the ago of sixteen tho child is supposed
to bo fitted to ontor upon a non-pro-fessionul
life. Pupils must study thirty
four hours por week at school, and in
additioa have lessons' to bo prepared
at their homes.
Tho rules aro strictly enforced, and
whenever a pupil disobeys them by
not nttending school, their parents aro
lined, unless in the case of sickness,
when an oxcuso is accepted. Tho
teachors receive their pay by tho year,
and their salaries continue whether tho
f chool is in session or not. Their com
pensation is small, tho salaries of tho
teachers of tho city schools being about
ifOOO, while tho pay of thoso teaching
in tho country is only half that amount.
Pictures and objects are used to repre
sent what it is intended for tho pupil
to learn, and consequently makes a bet
ter impression upon the scholar's mem
ory, and their advancement is much
greater.
There is but one Federal school in
Switzerland, and it has become famous
for tho great good it has accomplished.
Every man must contribute a part of
his stipend toward maintaining thoso
schools, and such an interest do tho
peoplo tako in thoir schools that it is
not infrequently tho ease that elections
turn upon school affairs. Tho laws of
tho primary schools aro strict, but sel
dom disobeyed. Prizes aro offered,
:u:d that, to a certain extont, tends to
keep tho mischiovously inclined boy
from playing their pranks. Louisvilk

ALL ABOUT COLORS.

"Tho cochineal insects furnish a
great many of tho vory lino colors.'
said an artist recently. "Among them
are tho gorgeous carmine, tho crimson,
hcarlot, carmine and purple lakes. Tho
outtlo fish gives tho sepia. It is the
inky lluid which tho fish discharges in
order to render tho water opaquo when
attacked. Indian yellow comes from
tho camel. Ivory chips produco tho
ivory black and bono black. Tho ex

horses' hoofs and other refuso animal
matter with impuro potassium carbon

dentally. Various lakes aro derived
from roots, barks and gums. IJlue

certain resinous substances. Turkey

which grows in Ilindostan. Tho yel

India ink is made from burnt camphor.
Tho Chinese aro tho only manufac

How Watches Are Stolen.
"A prison ofllcial," relates tho fol
lowing story: "When speaking one
day to a convict a professional plclf
pookot to whom I was giving a word
or two of friondly counsol, I referred
to his nodus vivendi, and askod him
why ho could not turn over a now leaf
(ho was undergoing his third penal
sentence for picking pockets) and bo
como an honest man. I could not.
sir,' ho replied, 'I'd must pick pockots.
I would take your watch to-morrow if
I met you in tho Strand, not,' he
added, -but what I'd glvo it back to you,
for you've been vory kind to mo.
Would you llko to know how to pre

about to draw my watch from my pocket,
when I found it was already in this ex

tho slightest touch. Ho then explained
to mo that tho most approved methods
of detaching n watch from its owner
was to hold tho ring to which tho I'lia.n

WOMEN IN POLITICS.
Ttojal UkIIti ATho Iliive Itrrn UnnccessTuI
an rolltlcluiif.
History is full of tho dangers that
attend tho interference of royal wives
in their husbands' politics. Reigning
Queens have been successful enough.
Elizabeth of England, Maria Thcrosa,
Catherine of Russia, and our present
Queen havo shown that they can se
lect wiso counselors and guido tho
destinies of realms; but tho Queen
Consorts of history, when they havo
interfered with tho politics of thoir
husbands' cabinets, havo dono a great
deal of harm. Henrietta Maria exer
cised an unfortunate influence at tho
court of Charles I. Mario Antoinotto
mndo her husband additionally unpop
ular. Tho last King of Naples was
married to a high-splrito 1 l?avnrian
Princess who encouraged his resist
ance to constitutional demands. In
1870 tho Empicss lCugenlo declared to
her intimato friends, "Remembor, this
is my war;" and it is likely enough
that tho Emperor, ill, weak, and hard
ly able to mount a horse, would have
deferred tho struggle had not his im
perious and spirited consort urged
him on. It is sometimes said that tho
influence of women on tho politics of
tho world would put an end to war;
but while they remain non-combatants
wo greatly doubt it. Thoy
aro able to realizo somo of
tho results of war tho empty chairs,
tho desolated homes, tho widowed
lives, but they never sco its coarser
consequences. Thoy novor witness a
battle-field after a fight is won tho
wounded and dying, the anguish of un
tonded men. tho fearful spectacle of
human lifo trampled in tho miro, and
all tho grim and disgusting incidents
of tho shnmbles of war, from tho
bloodshed of tho day of victory to tho
spectaelo later on of unburied bodies
moldoring in tho sun. Thoy read nov
ols and poems that throw a halo
around it all: they hail as heroes tho
men who return; they listen to tho
music of tho triumphal entry; they
watch tho waving plumes and tho
Haunting banners, and thoy invest
with interest every man in tho victor
ious array, it as in tno spirit or un
reasoning enthusiasm that beautiful
women on thrones send bravo men out
to slay and to bo slain stinging with
their taunts tho Princes who hesitate,
and rowardinsr with their smiles tho
rash Kings who stako thoir crowns on
tho issues of a day. Qucon Natalie, of
Scrvia, is only the last of a long list of
illustrious ladies who havo burnt their
fingers playing with tho fires of poll
tics and war. London 'Telegraph.
Tho blessiners of fortuno aro tho
lowest; tho next aro tho bodily ndvant
ages of strength nnd health; but tho
superlative blessings, in line, are thoso
of tho mind. Ij Estrange.
Tho rcmnrk of Prof. Drummond,
who lately visited so many ot tho col
leges of America, that "thoir general
ntmosphero is Christian; they aro ro
lisrious institutions," has much of truth
In it. It is. however, a trood doal
more truo of somo than it ia of othors.
Anger is an expression of personal
Bolfishness in ono thintr. and ansrer as a
strong displcasuro with evil, with mean
ness, baseness, irreverence, cowardico,
cruelty and stupid indifferencoto suffer
intr quite another nnd a different thing,
Ancror of tho latter sort is a Christian
virtue.
