FOR FLESHY PEOPLE. '
An Outline of the. Schweninger Treatment
for Obmltr.
Tho system of Prof. Ernst Schwenin
ger for the treatment of obesity, which
was introduced here about two vears
ago, has by this timo been sufficiently
tested to demonstrate that any body
who will determinedly follow tho repi
men prescribed by It can reduce his
llesh to any reasonable degree desired,
it being understood, of course, that his
physical condition is not such bv rea
son of incurable heart or kidney
disease as to maico reduction perilous.
And thcro is just ona thing about it(
that is hard to get used to. That is the
absolute prohibition of all liquids dur
ing meals and for an hour before and
an hour after each meal. It does not
seem so diliicult to do without fluids to
wash down ono" 3 food until it is tried,
and the iron pressure of habit in sip
ping and evcu gulping waiter, wine,
milk, tea, or coft'eo whilo eating is
realized. Tho very fact of prohibition
seems to make one more intensely
thirsty, and the juiciest food takes on
tho astringent dryness of chewed
pomegranate rind. Of course, ono be
comes accustomed to it after awhile,
eventually does not feol any desire for
liquids at the prohibited times, and
even finds less disposition to drink tit
any timo than ho had before. They
his reward comes, not only in tho re
duction of llesh, but in a surprising
diminution of tho nuisance of perspira
tion, which is the misery of all fat
ffiien.
It must not bo supposed that this
huttingofT ofliquidsis tho whole of tho
treatment, tnough it appears to bo tho
most important requirement. That
linking next to it is that ono must not
gorge wffh food, especially food in
which sugar and starch aro largely
component parts.
Ilho Iron Chancellor still lives by
Schweninger rules and in doing so
jjecps do!ln his tendency to growing
fat and remains a wondor of vitality
and vigor at his advanced age. No
longer ago than last April ono of tho
pecial dispatches told how ho re
stricted himself in eating to a light
brqakfast and substantial dinner, with
" no liquids at meals and only a glass of
$ino daily, taken just beforo retiring.
Ono experiment with the bogii3 system
of three pints of wator before breakfast
by Bismarck would doubtless afford
Gormany another llrst-class funeral.
Thoro is no royal road to relief from
corpulence that may bo traveled with
Case and safety, and without self-sacrifice.
Nostrums are from timo to time
advertised as atlording it such as one
now boomed in aglnd, and finding
not a fow dupes hero but thoy do not.
Starvation a hi Banting, and tho nos
trum cures that profess to reduce glut
tons whilo practicing their gluttony if
they will only "tako a wineglasslul at
each meal," are alike dangerous hum
bugs. Rftiouncing liquids seems to be
demonstrated the safest and best thing
when accompanied by duo moderation
in eating. But in no case is it abso
lutely safe for a fat person to adopt any
really effective measures for reducing
weight, without thorough preliminary
knowledge of the actual condition of
his vital organs. N. Y. Sun.

A young man from somo Inferior

The policeman on tho beat warned in
a fatherly way to scatter himself over
the city, but ho replied:
"Not a scatter! Honor chains me

"Yes, but you don't want to bo locked
up, I tako it," protested tho officer.
"Thero's no uso in getting into trouble
becauso your heart isn't mado on tho

But ho wouldn't go. Ho wanted goro

and waiting until tho officer was a block
away ho bristled up to ti man with a
basket on his arm and dared him to
look cross-eyed.
"I warn ye to kapo off!" exclaimed
the man us ho moved along.
The man of tho Marblo Heart moved
after him. Then tho baskot dropped,
tho younff man went into tho gutter in
a heap, and u sport declared him
knocked out in tho llrst round. Tho
policeman returned and picked him up
and called tho wagon, and it was not
until the victim reached tho sUition

"S'all right. Man of tho Martole

tho Iron Fist. Didn't know it before,
out I shall romomber it now always
