J. E. Harrison, a policeman, tried
to arrest a Spaniard at San Jose, Cal.,
when tho man drew a pistol and shot

nipped a pieeo out of Harrison's ear.

Have you stopped to inquire what
has made the money in farming for
the laat year or two? It would per
hapa bo easier to tell what haa not
made money for in the latter cate
gory are to bo included our two great
eat ataples, wheat and beef. It is tho
lesser staples that have paid hogs,
fat sheep, potatoes, beans, poultry,
eggs, and many of the still smaller
eourcos of income on the farm. Corn
has been a source of profit to those
who have had that grain far sale, and
especially the few who can now place
it on the market, but the many farm
ers who havo bought it and fed it to
cattle havo no very cheorful remarks
to make on this score. Tho average
in smaller products, however, has not
been bad, and do not forget that the
farmer who makes money every year
and there aro thoso who do is the
one who alwaya haa some of these
smaller products for sale.
The new wheat crop of Australia is
estimated at ten bushels per acre,
which is a higher average than any at
tained in the colony since 1875.
Young shade trees should be
trimmed into shape tho first few
years after having them set out. The
beauty of a shade troo depends upon
the shape given it when young.
A bit of freshly burnt charcoal in
the water in which Hyacinths, etc.,
are growing, (in glasses) will keep tho
water sweet a long time, and prevent
the neceasity of changing it.
Lato potatoes can bo put in on the
ground formerly occupied by peas.
The late crop keeps best during win
tor. The chief difficulty now is to get
good seed.
Cut off all diseased limbs from the

Lato corn for fodder can be planted
now. Sow it thickly in the rows, so as
to have the stalks small and tender.
Sorghum also makes an excellent fod
der crop, and is highly relished by

A correspondent at Albion, Me.,
says "our farmera are the most intelli
gent, frugal and industrioua in the
State. Our town is free from debt and
has but three paupers, taxes aro low
and consequently we havo not the
Western fever."
Melons will now send out shoots,
whilo the eailier kinds will blossom.
Do not work them in tho hills so as to
disturb tho roots, but work the ground
around them and in front of the
shoots. Should weeds or grass appear
in tho hills pull them up.
Corn endures drought as well as any
crop grown, but only when tho field
is kept clean. A thorough cultivation
of tho field after a shower is better
than a coating of manure, as it pro
tects tho roots and affords a great sup
ply of moisture. The work is easily
done under the check-row system.
It will soon bo timo for tho hens
molt. Keep tho hens that begin

molt early, as they will bo ready for
winter laying beforo thoso that do not
molt until late in tho season. Sell off
all tho extra males and late-hatched
chicks. Feed very littlo corn, and
give fresh meat three times a weok.
All young animals are more oasily
stunted whilo they aro depondent up
on milk as thoir principal food than at
any other tune, and tor this reason
considerable care should bo exercised
to see that a steady growth is main
tained. A stunted animal is not de
sirable, to say tho least.
Alter your nrst crop oi clovor is re
moved apply 100 pounds of dry-land
phistei per aero over tho hold, and it
will improve tho second growth. On
soiiio soils plaster is a special fertilizer
for clover. On light sandy soils a
mixturo of two parts wood ashes and
ono part plaster is bettor.

ficial. An oxcollent mixturo for such
purposes is two parts wood ashes, ono
part lime, and ono part coarse salt.
Only a small quantity neod bo used at
each application.
This is tho season for growing root
crops, licets, parsnips and carrots
aro now well advanced, but they re
quire fllosi attention in order to keep
tho rows clean. After each rain tho
ground should bo cultivated, and if
grass has taken hold between the
plants it will pay to uso tho hoe. By
so doing it tho roots will bo larger, (
bettor in quality, and a fair yield se
cured. I
It should lo noticed that when
small seeds of tender plants, suoh as
purslano, aro buried deep in tho
ground, they will lie dormant until,
by tho working of tho ground, thoy
aro brought quite near the surface,
whore tho temperature ami fruouccoss
of air favor thoir sprouting. After tho
first shower they will usually como up,
and should bo killed boforc thoy show
nioro than two or threo loaves. After
they becomo au inch or two long it is
laru to keop them from going to seed
without lugging them out of tho field.
