THE PERSIAN SEER.
An Individual of Considerable Importance
and Very Little Learning.
ThoQionqcm, or astrologer. Is a
power in Persia. Ho is recognized as
& man of science, a member of a learn
ed profession. Tho chief astrologer is
a high court officer, from whose ruling
thoro is no appeal, for his decisions
"i arc based upon knowledge that is com
municated direct from the stars. Thus,
if he decrees that tho Asylum of tho
0 Universe must not start on a hunting
expedition on Thursday, but that half
an hour after midnight on Saturday
will be tho fortunato hour, ho is ablo
to give irrefragiblo reasons for his con
clusions by showing that Saturn is in
tho ascendant in one case, while on
Saturday night, at tho prcciso time
mentioned, there will bo a happy con
junction of Venus.
If another astrologer is consulted ho
will give tho same story. Evyy hour
in the day, and every day in the year,
is thus worked out as fortunate, in
? different or unlucky in the astrologer's
books of fate.
Besides these calendars they have as
their stock in trade a plumb-line, a
level, a celestial sphcro and an astro
labe. Tho astrolabes are in tho form
of a gigantic watch and are often beau
tifully made. Every largo town eon
tains at least two astrologers, and they
arc very far from being poor. A Per
sian may find an astrologer very use
ful, especially if he bo an officer and
desires to evade some responsibility.
Tims, suppose a provincial Governor is
ordered to the capital and that ho does
not want to go, what more powerful
reason for delay in starting than to re
ply that he is wailing for a fortunato
hour, and what easier than to induce
tho astrologer to fail to find one? In
the meantime tho officer has time toad
minister tho necessary bribes at court,
and tho storm blows over.
Istikhara, tossing up, or drawing of
the lot, is dono with a rosary. A bead
is grasped at at hap-hazard; "Good,"
"Bad," "Ind.fferent," is ejaculated at
each bead, till the big terminal one is
reached, and that decides the question.
Answers are given in conversation,
bargains aro made or refused, And sori
ous acts aro undcrtakon under tho
guidnuco of this formula. Another
way is to thrust a knife into tho loaves
of tho korau or ono of tho poct'eal
books, and bo guided by what is found
at tho place. Tho diviners are real
quacks and gain thoir success by work
ing on tho fears of tho people. The
guilty party in a scmdal or criminal
inquiry in his nervousness is provoked
to do sonio act that brings about his
detection. Popular Science Monthly.
PERFECT EQUALITY.
Why It Ik Exsentlal to tho Carry I lip On
of u Fair DIacumsIoii.
No discussion between two persons
can bo carried on with any degree of
fairness unless each person recognizes
tho other as his full peer in that dis
cussion. It matters not that one per
son is older and moro experienced and
better informed than the other; con
senting to enter into tho discussion of
a given point, tho superior thereby as
sumes tho position of one who ma' bo
in error at that point; of ono who may
bo shown his error by tho other person;
and of ono who is ready to woigh fairly
and candidly tho views and arguments
presented to tho other in tho course of
tho discussion, and to bo convinced b
them if t liny arc such that they ought to
convinco him. Ho who does not recog
ni.u this as his duty in ever discussion
in which ho bears a part is incompetent
to conduct a discussion intelligently.
If, indeed, ono dooms another unworthy
of being counted his peer in a discus
sion, then ho has tho privilege of
do. lining to enter into a discus
sion wilh him, ovon though he would
bo willing to bo his instructor, or to
give him all needed information; but a
discussion oneo begun must be carried
on on tho basis of perfect equal ty be
tween the disputants as dis
putant", or it is not a truo diseus:on.
It is in view of this' truth that ono
who lias any real, or apparent, supe
riority over another, with whom ho is
discussing a point, must bo scrupu
lously careful to refrain from assort
ing, or scorning to think of, that supe
riority, if it bo a learned teacher in
discussion with a j'oung scholar, or a
trained export in discussion with a
layni in. or a wiso father in discussion
with a forward child, or a host discuss
ing With a guest at his own table, tho
discussion as a discussion must go on
ns betweou peer?. Tho moment that
tho superior assorts or intimates tho
claim that ho is to bo regarded in this
discussion as a superior, or that his
opin on is to have more we glit than
the other's opinion that moment iio
proposes to deny his op) onent the
rights of an equal in a contest which
tho (wo have entered as equals. If,
indeed, he who has superiority in other
respects can show his superiority as a
disputant, Ids superiority is entitled to
prompt recognition aecordii'gly; hut
until a dh-putnnt can show Ids superi
ority as a disputant, ho ought to bo
ashamed to aert, during a discussion,
his right to bo recognized in that dis
cussion as a superior on any other
ground. S. S. 'J ivies.

BEAUTIFUL CHURCHES.
Why
Tlicy Van Not He Considered
Waate of Capitol.
Are beautiful churches a waste?
Perhaps so, from a strictly economic
view-point, though of that I am not
sure. 1 am willing to grant that there
is no return in hard moncv for these
enormous outlays, if admitting this
will givo our utilitarian mends any
satisfaction. But it is useless to at
tempt to strike n money balance in
tlieso matters. There is a valuo in tho
massive mountain that no book oi
rcal-cstato valuation can recognize.
Thoro is a valuo in tho mighty catar
radt that has nothing to do with
water-power. So thcro is a valuo in
tho cathedral spiro that i.s not com
putablo in coin. A spiritual valuo in
herent in tho sublimely beautiful.
pass St. Patrick's ivery day, ami thero
is always sonio ono gazing up at those
towers that take tho thoughts as well
as tho eyes away from tho rattling
pavement, and hundreds, yes thou
sands, owo to thoso "useless" towers
somo moments of self-forgctfulnesj
and somo moments of that conscious
spiritual uplifting, which is, in pro
portion to its power, a mount of trails
figuration. Tho most beautiful church
I ever saw or cvor expect to see, un
til I worship in tho "houso not made
with hands is not a full-grown
church; it is only a chapel a Miiall,
low building, put up at an cxpenso ol
about a thousand dollars. It is beauti
ful, becauso tho cellar wall is a free
will offering from poor farmers who
had a right to claim a winter's rest
nfter the busy harvest season; because
each timber of tho frame-work l-oprc-scuts
hours of toil in making aprons
and holders, hy tho salo of which to
raise a few dollars hours needed for
rest of somo mother's weary head and
tired hands; becauso every clapboard
tells of a pipeful of tobacco less for
tho father; every shingle, a cup of tea
less for the mother and the dauhtcr;
and every nail, a stick of candy less
for tho child. It is beautiful in con
taining an organ, whilo there aro no
organs in tho homes of tho givers; in
having pictures on its walls, though
theirs aro blank; in its carpeted isles,
whilo tho floors of tho donors nro bare.
But would this samo chapol bo beauti
ful if it were taken up and sot down
on Fifth avenucP Thore, instead of a
temple of self-sacrifice, it would ap
pear an ugly, wooden box of niggard
liness. Tho church architecture of
Fifth avenuo represents a certain
amount of self-sacrilicc, though very
far, I fear, from attaining unto that
of tho people who built tho littlo
Dwight's chapol. If into tho
beauty of form and of color of our
larger city churches could bo injected
the spirit of self-denial that built tho
chapel in the little hill-town of Massa
chusetts, we should havo temples
ovon' way worthy of the Most High
Goo. "
At tho close of a recent performance

ho, "and I'll rclaso ye " Bangor
