that when tho proprietor of a news
paper undertakes to state what has

book for thin year, where it can bo
shown that tho detailed report received
from a publisher was untrue.

There are a number of railroad con
tractors in town at present, says the
Portland AVf't. It is learned that they
arc here for tho purpose of bidding for
branch line to be built by tho O. Jl. ifc
N. Co. One of these lines will run
from Willow ('reek to Ileppner, a (lis
tanco of forty miles. 1 ho other is to
bo built from Wallula to Eureka Flat,
a distance of forty miles. A third lino
is talked of but tho matter of building
it has not been decided on, .Manager

A DEAD INDIAN.

was observed on a horse, vainly eudoav

through the street. .She had a small
child strapped on her back with a
shawl, and when tho horso would jump
or move rapidly tho high horn on tho
back of tlio saddle would stir tho little
fellow mound in a terrible shape, ttho
was told that if she was not careful she
would have a dead babv, which made
her mad. After a while tho child
Ceased to cry; the mother unstrapped
it and found that it was dead. Tho
