.Mrs. Dr. Morris is very sick, but at
present is on the mend.
Weather beautiful, and ranchers havo
begun business in earnest.
Uev. Mr. Uoils has been holding a
protracted meeting at the Center school
house, The meeting closed without a
convert. Must be wo arc rather bad
here.
School election resulted in the elec
tion of Mr. Sanders for director and
Mr. G. W. Uennehoir for clerk. Tho
right men in the right places. We al
so voted to build a school house, two
stories high, the upper room to be
used for a public hall. This building
when completed will cost over if 1. '200,
and will be the finest in this part of
the county. A great interest is being
taken in education here. W aro ex
ceedingly glad to note this change for
the better.
Our school closed on the lUth, with
due honor to both teacher and nunils.
the house was tilled to overflowing,
from the babo to the snowy locks of
many winters. At noon a table was
spread and most bountifully tilled with
all ;tho good things that could be
thought of. Each anil all ato until
Dame Nature bade them quit, and yet
theie was an abundance remaining.
After a general good visit among the
older people and many games indulged
in by the youth, school was called and
the pupils rendered very ably their

were dismissed, to return to their re

near morn. This is tho first time in
this valley that so great an interest has
been taken in schools, and we sincerely
hope this interest will continue. We
have had a good teacher this winter,
and to ltim wo extend our heartfelt
thanks for taking such a great interest
in tlie welfare of our youth, no has
given universal satisfaction. Our wish
is that success may ever crown him
and bo his watchword in the future.

There is another petition in circula
tion for a county road from hero to

In the suit brought by tho govern
ment against Hughes and Welch for
cuttitig timber on government land,
and tried in the U. S. Circuit court at
Portland, la.-t week, tho defendants
were found not guilty.

I will contribute a little mite.
Eagle valley had quito a little land
boom recently. Several bachelors
have sold their farms to men of fami
lies, and several others havo sold from
20 to SO acres each to parties from tho
States, Oh no, Missouri of the true
grit too, proud to own it, and very un
like the mini that came out some timo
ago, who, when asked what part of tho
States he was from, replied, "I did not
stay there long, I was from Missouri
here." Other families are hero that
have not bought land yet, and I hear
of quito a number expected to arrive
very soon. Jf all get homos the farms
will have to be divided into -10 aero
tracts. Most all of the emigrants seem
to be very nice, high iiijndcd people,
with plenty of pocket change. Ono
or two of the bachelors I think sold
rather low, and T wouldn't wonder a
bit if one of them will take ono of tho
old man's girls very soon in order to
get even with him. Then ho would
bo fully assured ho was all Wright.
Many hero are very busily engaged
clearing off sago brush preparatory for
putting in grain and nioro alfalfa.
Farmers hero havo been ablo to dis
pose of all the hay they could siiaro-
at from !f( to if 12 per ton for tho last
few years, and they can produco about
five tons per aero each summer. This,,
with other advantaged and convenien
ces, you will not wonder at a boom.
ffho valleyites did a great deal of
work last fall and early winter on a
new road leading up Summit creek,
destined for Cornucopia. This routo
is a great deal nearer than tho old
ono and has tho lightest or easiest
grade that can bo found. They intend
to resume work again as soon as they
can get their crops in, and intend in
complete it this summer to tho upper
end of Pino valley, or else intercept
tho Union and Cornucopia road at the
lower end of B. F. Fowel's ranch on
Summit creek if tho county will ren
der ii little assistance, and I think it
should do so.
Tho middle school, taught by Mr.
Parker, closed last Tuesday with a.
very nice entertainment and exami
nation, also a splendid dinner for tho
vast crowd of men, women and chil
dren. After dinner quito a number of
good pieces, and an essay on educa
tion, wcro well rendered. Aftor this,
by invitation, quito a number of tho
patrons gave tho school good and
timely advieo. Mr. Yenning also
niado a few very appropriate remarkH.
Tho teacher then treated tho largo
crowd bountifully to nuts and candied,
made a few very pointed suggestions,
and cloecd the school.
