Our contemporary tho Lit fJrando
Journal, iu speaking of thu .New
Years' edition of a Portland paper,
admiringly remarks: 'Tho enormi
ty of tho cuterprisu may bu estima

If it had said "tho atrocity of tho en

have) been the same, although ijuitu
tho ruvcree of what was inuaut.
On our first page this week will bo

great pride in our contributors to this

that some of them, iu tho not fur dis

not keep it tile of thu paper, should
cut out these poems and preserve them

I It is iifccMarv inst now for every
I body to keep their fires going almost
constantly, and great care should he
taken that n general conflagration is
not the result. Should a lire break
out now, it cotlld not but be dUas
trotiF, on account of meagre means
for fighting it, and the limited amount
of water to be got at. Be careful.
Wager, cilijorol the Pendleton Ore
yonian is quite a post. Recently he
published one of his productions;
which r.c consider the best thing that
has appeared in his paper for some
lime. lie reluctantly acknowledges
he wrote ; 'the doggerel" and says it
was done to please a lady who reques
ted him to do so, but he promises not
to do-so any more if his readers will
forgive him, etc. etc. etc. The mod
esty of us great men is truly remarka
ble. Some twenty-five ycir3 ago, after
quite an unpleafantncs' the "duty"
was taken off the black wool iu
the United Slates. The owners of
said wool thought they were ruined
entirely, but time has proven that it
was not only a benefit to the entire
country, but to them. The popular
clamor now is for the duty to be ta
ken off or materially reduced on the
whilo article and various other pro
ductions. whWi will he done just as
cffcrtually as it was iu the other case,
with the same beneficial results.
The Democratic Central Committee
of this county will meet some time iu
the early part of next month to open
the campaign and appoint a day for
holding the primaries, which will
probably be set for some time in
March. The republicans will doubt
less select about the same time for
moving in the matter. We arc m
hopes that our readers, both republi
can and democratic, and they com
prise the great majority of voters in
the county, will show more interest
than they usually do; attend the pri
maries, and elect the best men in the
precinct for delegates to the conven
tionmen who know their own minds
and will not he hoodwinked by wire
pullers. Leave tho youthful aspi
rant, who would like to be a delegate,
but who has not had his eye-teeth
cut yet, at home, and scud along the
old man. In that way a good lot of
officers for the next term will be the
result,
The 'beautiful Grande Rondo"
furnishes Ella Higginson, of I.a
Grande, with material for another
story, which appears in the current
number of tho West Shore. It is well
written and proves that Ella is quite
a genious. It will be remembered
that an engine with a snow-plow at
tached, ran off the railroad track,
down the hillside, near Union, a year
oi so ago, in which the engineer got
his leg broken. This enjiineer is the
hero of the story, and Ella, iu order
to make tho thing move impressive,
describes tho hcenc as frightful in the
extreme, in which the engineer, (Mr.
l.eavett) is mangled and torn up hor
ribly, and dies forgiving everybody.
It occurs to us that if Mr. Lcavett
finds out that he is dead, and has for
given people in the promiscous man
ner described, ho wilhkirk about it.
Wo trust, however, for the sake of
the fair authoress, that ho will con
sider it his duty to remain dead.
THE O.UEGOX J'KUAXO.
rorlhind has an organ not exaelly
a hand organ or musical instrument,
nut a "news organ" that considers
itsolf about the only thing of that
kind this sido of nowhere, and it may
be that there are persons scattered hero
and there who also in some way havo
got a similar idea. Sooth to say, this
is not on account of any tranijceudiint
excellence of tho pap'tr, for it is a
mere pigmy compared with a number
of papers published on tho Pacific
coast, hut for the reason that when
ever the prosidiug oraclo takos snuff
and sneer.es, tho great majority of
dhntnutivo "newspaper men,"
throughout tho interior of tho Slate,
feel it incumbent on them to sneeze
or make a similar noiso in unison,
which is carried into every nook and
corner of the country, and thus thu
only paper" becomes "very influ
ential." In constantly maniiig note of this
species of toadyism, wo nro reminded
of thu iugouuouR musical IntUnirnonl
called tho Piginno, onco invented ly
a gentleman from lYanoo. It con
sisted of n hog box about live foul
square at tho largo und and tiipeilug
to about tlx inches sqimro at tho oth
er. In tho small cud was placed n
little pig, and next was placed a larg
er pig, und so on up to n large pork-
' or. Their tails wuro thou drawn
, through holes bored iu tho side of tho
! box for that purposo, when by pinch
I lug on oh' tail with a pair of tongs,
thu various notes desired could bo ob
tained. In thin hut uombiuatinu,
however, it is only nocoFsary a pi null
the big porker's tail in tho Portland
office , when the sound caused by it
will reverberate and musically die
away in the newspaper offices of the
rural districts.
There is, probably, not to exceed
fifty cupics of the paper in question,
taken iu Union county, and these are
taken piincipally by merchants and
business men forihe sake of the mar
ket reports, etc, What is true of Un
ion county, wo have no doubt i true
of nearly every interior county of the
Mate. Then, if the interior papers.
would utterly ignore it, we would
like to ask what influence "thu on
ly" paper would have iu politics or
anything else? The ignoring",pro
ccjs is not likely to be adopted , how
ever, for the average editor is not
constructed that way. This is evi
denced by the nauseating gush,nade
over the New Years' edition of that
paper, The edition appears to be
nothing more nor less than a few is
sues of the paper folded together
with a sheet containing some of the
cheapest kind of photo-engravings of
residences and scenes in and about
Portland. No doubt the owners of
said residences paid more to have
them inserted than the whole edition
cost, And Mils is called enterprise.
We venture to say that any one of the
better eluso of interior newspapers of
Oregon, could, by commencing to
collect their matter now, on next
New Years' day, issue as good an
edition , with better illustrations, with
out any great strain on their financial
resources. The descriptive articles it
contains, if we may judge by the de
scription of Union county, is utterly
unreliable. If any of our readers de
sire a publication to send to friends
outside the State, we would advise
them to send the West Shore, the most
unpretentious number of which is far
more creditable to our Statu than this
much puffed edition of the "only
paper. ' '
AVENUES TO WEALTH.
The I istory of the ri.-c and progress
of tho Aiucrican people, says the In
land Empire, hai already demonstra
ted that it is to' the presence of skilled
labor that ureal cities owe their
wealth. The unopened avenues. Of
course in a country so new there arc
but few branches of manufactures that
have been fairly inaugurated, much
less worked up to a paying basis.
But now is the time we feel confident,
for those who desire the advancement
of the country , to put their hands into
their pockets and pull out money to
invest iu domestic manufactures. For
a long time tho Dayton mills (since
destroyed by tire) kept this whole up
per country supplied with blankets,
cassimeres and woolen fabrics of all
sorts, made from wool grown in thid
immediate vicinity. The destruction
of those mills by fire has since been
severely felt, both hero and at Daytim,
as the factory was the chief commer
cial depondance of the hitter city. So
long as the long-haul clause of the
inter-state commerce bill, however,
remains in full force and effect, there
is but little lear of eastern competition
with home nianufactures, especially
in the matter of woolen fabrics; nnd
tho re-organization of the old Dayton
mills at Walla Wrlla, where they
should havo been in -tho first place,
will ho of incalculable benefit to this
city, whilo it cannot hope to rival
Portland, Seattle or Tacoma as a
manufacturing city, will bo a long
distance iu advance of all other rival
towmt.
