woolen mill at this place. Much has

siderable talk has been had. hut noth

a capital stock of $126,000, with W.
T. Wright. A. E. Eaton and F. F.
Baker as incorporators. Stork books
were opened and a large amount of
stock readily taken. We have re
frained from saying anything about it
this time until vo knew that" il was an
assured thing. We now know that
such is the case, and as the stock is
rapidly being taken we leel justified
in making the unqualified statement
that a

probably not in Eastern Oregon,

facilities for a woolen mill than does
the enterprising town of Union.
That a woolen mill will pay large
interest on the investment there can
be no doubt wbatevor. and the eager
ness with which the stock is being
taken is proof that men arc ready and
willing to invest their money in this
enterprise in preference to seeking
borrowers at the present rate of inler
est. When constructed and fully equipped
it will, we believe, be the only wool
en niill'hetween t lie Missouri and the
Willamette rivers. There are only
three such mills in the State the Ore
gon City mill, the Brownsville mill
and the Ashland mill, and at present,
we believe there is not one in Wash
ington Territory.
The mills in the Willamette valley
draw largely upon Eastern Oregon
for their supply of wool, manufactur
ing it into cloth and ready made
clothing and ship it back to us. This
mill will he in the center of a large
wool-irrowinir suction which is one

Its location will be adja
cent to many ot the large mining belts
ot Eastern Oregon, Klalio ami eastern
Washington, and the opportunities
for furni-hing good cloth into any of
these sections of territory are not
equalled by any other place in the
state. There is a very largo scope of
country in every direction which can
be supplied from this point at less
cost than from any other.
That this city will reap the reward
she so richly deserves, docs not admit
of a question. Property will bo en
hanced at least twenty-live per cent of
its present value as soon as the mill

Mr. Stephenson is interested in xcvcral
prospects in the Granite mining dis
trict. He will return again in the
spring.
Prof. Geo. E. Owen, principal of the
Union Public School wiw placed under
arrest last Tuesday for punishing one
of his pupils, beyond what, his parents
thought, was warranted. He gave
bonds, and the trial was Fet for Satur
day. We know nothing of tho facts
in regard to tho infliction, hence re
frain from making any comment up
on the matter at present.
Mr. Fred. Simonis, of Eagle valley,
was in town this week purchasing eup
plies. He said ho was surprised at the
way goods were being sold in Union ;
that he could buy goods 25 per cent
cheaper here, than in Baker City. Ho
said he had saved several dollars by
coining here, and that it would be bet
ter for the farmers in Eagle vallev to
borrow money and buy goon's in Union,
than to bwap wheat etc. for goods in
Baker City. That is the experience of
all who come to Union. Our mer
chants are talking, and talking to the
point. Mark that down in your note
book.
CITY ELECTION.
Tho annu-il city election will be
held next Monday for tho purpose of
electing a mayor, aldermen, marshal,
recorder, treasurer and street com
missioner. There has, heretofore,
