NOTES BY THE WAY. The festival si von for the benefit of the l'iouocr Relief Fund Association, at Cornucopia, on Thanksgiving day, was n complete biiccetH in every particular. It wna largely attended by peoplo from ovory Foi'lion of tlio country, Union be ing represented by a number of ladies and gentlemen, and hint, but not leant, by our splendid Silver Cornet Hand. "The writer of thin article had the pleasure of being among the number who attended from here, and while the most of the others started out in their private conveyance?, wo boarded the Tine creek Btage, and early YVcdne." dr.y morning, ere the urn wan up, was far out in the mountains! euTonte for Cornucopia. The nun came up slowly and tinted the clouds and higher peaks with gold, while the canyons lay gray and cold beneath, and blended higher if with tintB of many colon). Truly he who has a love for the beauties of nature and loves to contemplate the "wonder works of God and Naturo' hand" will be amply rewarded by tak ing a trip over the Union and Cornu copia road. tiii: r:o.u From tl'" f'i'y to Sanger, ft diatancc of about thirty-two miles, in substantially built and in excellent condition. From there on (the part built by the State) is not m good, having come Hharp tuniM and ntcvp pitches, and excee dingly narrow in places. Taken alto gether, however, it is much better than we expected to Hie, and with anincou mdvrntu expenditure could bo made into a good highway. When this is done, which munt bo noon, the road will be of incalculable benefit to Union county. We reached Cornucopia at fi o,clock in the evening and was warmly received by mine host, Mr. H. C. Warinner, p'roprictor of the Alpine hotel, who loet no time in making us comfortable. The Alpine is a good hotel and credi table to the camp. After partaking of an excellent nupper, the band procee ded to the ollice of the Oregon Uold ilining Company, and discoursed khv oral stirring airs, after which they were right royally KNTKKTAlNi:i) JJY l'ROV. I.UOK, Huporintendent of the company, who never docs anything by halves. The evening was most pleasantly spout in conversation, thu interchange of wit, inunie, and the stowing away of good cheer. If there was ought of anything lacking to make our reception more pleasant, wo failed to notice it. Next morning (Thanksgiving day) nt eleven o'clock, Clingan V, Cunning ham's spacious opera boin-o was thrown open, and the peoplo began to assem ble. The band played in frput till thu hall was comfortably filled, when tui: I'Uocuu.MMi: "Which had been prepared for the day was Miueoi-sfully carried out, an follows: I. The outdoor sports which worn con templated, were omitted on account of the cold weather. Our limited space will not allow m to make special montiou of the merits of the several performers in this enter tainment, suffice it to say that all did exceedingly well, and the entire pro grammo was highly enjoyed and aj prcciatod by the largo asFomblage. At I :S0 p, m., an invitation was giv en by Prof. Luce to visit the quart, mill, and probably live hundred peo ple, headed by the band, marehed fiom town up to the company's works which wero brilliantly ii,i.v.mix.vti:i uv i:u:criiiriTY. And inspected the samu. The work already accomplished by this compa ny id simply prodigious, and it is but commenced. That the mines of Pine creek will yield rich returns for all the labor and capital that is being invested in thorn, js no longer a matter ot quus-1 Hon. They are now down on the "Whitman" over three hundred feet, ' which present a line body of ore. This mine is situated about 2600 feet above tho mill. Tho ore is carried to the mill by means of a tramway of very ingot'iuiu construction, ;liioh 1 scomH to tho untiophistieatod observer ' to "run iUelf." About twenty men are now employed on tho O. (I. M. CO'ti MILL Which i fitted with all tho latfibt im-' 'pftSved machinery, and it K'rhai, beat mill of its size (twunly rtmniie , with a capacity of forty) on Hut Vaoiilo coast. It is now running night and ; duy and crushing -10 tons of ore per , dav. A brief description ot tho mill will be of iuloreat to our rewdwe. After Urt WON WinVj'ed frdru )tr mine, by means of the tramway above mentioned, it is then taken from the ore house, which is situated about ons hundred yards above the mill, in crm mon mining cars, weighed and then dumped on iron gratings in the mill tlio liner ore passing through and the coarser rolling iovn onio tue noor in front of the rock breakers, whre it is broken to a little larger than a bun's egg. Under the ore bins arc four Nul lock ore feeders which feeds the ore automatically to the stamps. Tha ore i turning from the stamps Hows over copper plates, which catches the coars er free gold. From these plates it runs and is distributed over eight fine vanners, which concentrated out the sulphureta and heavier material. The tailing are then run into four scpeia ting tanks, to eliminate some of the surplus water and the pulp. From there it is run through M. P. Ross' con tinuous fystcm of pan amalgamation. This consists of, lirdt, three special grinding pans, which act lomowhat on the principle of a ntone burr mill, and reduced to the flnenees- of sand. Fol lowing Ihejo are nine standard amal gamating pans in a row, which the pulp flows through, one aftpr thu oth er in routine, In thenn the pulp is made hot, and is brought in vigorous contact with quicksilver in conjunc tion with other chemicals, the result is the amalgamation of such line gold and silver that happens to escape the previous treatments. After those nine pans, are four settlers, in which the quicksilver is precipitated and the tail ings allowed to go out of the water sluice. It will bo seen that the ore is subjected to three treatments, viz: Plate amalgamation, concentration, and pan amalgamation. We do not in the least doubt that the MINKS OF UNION COUNTV Will in a very few years be recognized as the richest on tho Pacific coast, and that an era of unusual prosperity will in consequence dawn upon our people. Owing to our limited time we could make onlv a brief visit to the "lied Jacket" lately bonded by the 0. G. M. Co, and superintended by W. T. IJur dett. This is also a good mine Work on a boarding house for the miners is now. in progress. A good road has been .lately built from the "Whitman" to tlio"Hed Jacket." Wo regret ex ceedingly that we could not visit all the mines in this wonderful region. We wished to do so very much. Some line specimens shown to us from the "Moonshine" ledge, owned by Messrs. Holies. Honor & Pierce, made us feel like quitting tho newspaper business and becoming a prospector. A 0 It AND II ALL In the evening was attended by a largo number of happy merry-makers, who seemed to enjoy' thu occasion to tho fullest extent. Good music, was fur nished by tho local string band, and an excellent supper was served at the restaurant kept by Mr. and Mrs. Gil more. One hundred and twenty num bers wero sold. One incident of the evening greatly pleased the guests from this city, viz : homo one propos ing "Three cheers for Union and thu band!" which wan responded to with a vim that left no doubt of its sin eerily. At 'J o'clock the lottery took place. A large number of prizes wero con tributed, and over 1)03 tickets wero sold. About !fJ)0 was collected in this way for the benefit of tho P. R. F, Associa tion. The worthy cause was assisted greatly by the ellbrts of Miss Curtis, Miss Est os and Geo. Neweomb, the lat ter being about as persuasive an auc tioneer as we over saw. Tin: i'. it. j:. association Is in a nourishing condition and tho tunds collected on this occasion will assist it greatly in the building and support of tho hospital. It is a hu mane and noble eilbrt, and should re coiv'e the support and encouragement of everyone. It will bo a boon to the sick and buffering. Ho whoso heart promps him to reach out his hand to assist a sulloring brother, is uoblo in deed, and a spark of divinity is in him. "To cheer the weary, and to soothe the sad. Doth h'H'vn happier men, ami shames at least tho bail." Tho promoters of this causo aro de serving of all praise, and we hope from time to time to makonoto of tho prog ress of this worthy association. Wo met many friendly and hospita ble people, whoso kindness wo fully appreciate. Wo would like to men tion them all if wo had tho space. Thursday, on invitation ot Dr. Woods, tho writer, Mr. A, T. Ncill and Mr. James L. Lowell of this city, partook of a sumptuous dinnorat the residence of Mrs. N. T. Rarrio, in Allentown. Mrs. Harrio is a most excellent lady, and makes all near her fed at home. Our 'thanks are duo to Prof. Luce for his courtesy and kindness, and to Mr. George O. Ncwi-omb, secretary of the P. l. F. Association, whoso friendship when once given, is not compassed by narrow limits, ami to whom vu aro in debted for many favors. Saturday, regretting very much that wo could not stay longer, wo returned t Union as wo wont, (on tho stage.) Wo stopped for a short time at Till: HANURIt MILL lq the llogom district, which has quite a number of men employed at present. This i a splendid property. The m'll is now ruuuiiu ton stamps, but has a capacity of twenty. A largoj amount uf new machinery is to be put in soon. Wo took dinner at tho Half Way hotuo, kept by Mr. and Mrs. II. A. F.atou, where tho traveling public will always Hud first olatH accomodations and good meals. Our journey on homo was without incident. Wo hope, of ten heronftor to vudt thu good peoplo of Cornucopia.
