Inilracrllmbte Ornndriir or ttif Crnnil Can
yn of tho Ark:n;n ami tho I'hiln.
Tho Grmul Ciuiyon of the Arkansas
excels in majesty any seeno whieh it
Inw jet been our privilege to look upon.
How many ages or eenluries or thou
sands of years tho remorseless river
was engaged in cutting its way through
these everlasting mountains "is a nut
ter of' conjecture. The channel of the
river (at this point not a large one)
pursues a tortuous way for many miles
between the lofty rocks, which its
ceaseless gnawings have severed. Tho
solid walls, rising sometimes almost
perpendicularly to the height of eleven
hundred feet, the winding course of the
canyon apparently closing us in a
doorless prison, the skylight seeking
to penetrate the depths of the abyss,
and a splashing raiu, all added to tho
beauty, tho grandeur, the terror, the
excitement, and tho pleasure of tho
occasion. Our good engine, with re
markable ease and speed, climbing
up the grade on the background of tho
enormous rocks, looked like a speck,
a dot, a child's plaything. "Tho
Royal Gorge," as it is" called, is the
culmination of the canvon. Hero is
scarcely room for tho river alone, but
man's ingenuity has overcome nature's
obstructions, and a woll-mcd thor
oughfare is the result. Kmergingfrom
the canyon the road follows the Arkan
sas river to Salida, On our left are tho
snow-covered peaks of Sangre do Cris
to, Spanish name meaning the "Rlood
of Christ." Hero wo leave tho river
and begin to climb and scale the heights
of Marshall Pass over the great conti
nental divide.
We wind along the mountain sides
rising higher and higher. Our train
is divided into two sections. Looking
upward wo seo now a line of earth
which marks the course of tho road;
now the first section of our train ap
pears, leading us half a niHe. Looking
downward wo see the course wo have
come; now one, now two, now three
sections of tho road appear at once,
tier above tier. Looking outward wo
see the great slopes of the majestic
mountains and tho recesses of the val
leys. Tho Rockies scorn to opon tho
doors of their secret chambers and to
reveal to us their hidden beauties.
At length, on the very summit, hi a
long snow-shed, through many of
which wo have passed, our panting,
puinng engine, hko a tired anil over
burdened animal, stops in its course,
as if to gather strength for the strugglo
before it in earning its load down on
tho other side. We are 10,878 feet
(inoro than two miles) above the level
of the sea.
The descent, with the loops of tho
road bending back and forth, and with
somewhat milder scenery, is tho re
verse of the ascent. The train rolls on,
and now darkness comes upon us. Our
road lay through a gorge described as
"grander, deeper, darker, and yet
more beautiful than we had so recent
ly passed through." It is called tho
black canyon. Sitting or standing
upon the back platform of our ear we
were piite able to see the majestic out
lines of this great gorge. Waterfalls,
the swiftly-flowing river, tho lofty and
precipitous rooks reaching out their
arms as if to crush us in their em
brace, the Currecauti Needle an ab
rupt and isolated pinnacle, symmetrical
and graceful are all discernible in the
darkness, which lends to each a charm
of its own. The morning light finds
us on tho great plains.
An awful, a terrible desert. Its
desolation is simply indescribable. It
extends for more than one hundred
miles between tho Grand and tho
Green rivers, and while dreary and
somewhat monotonous, is by no means
uninteresting. On the right and left
are arid wastes of land, bearing li'io
and there tho scantiest possible growth
of worthless weeds. Tho hills in color
anil in their wrinkled surface remind
one of tins hides of some gigantic ele
phant. Tho buttos, with thin, level
tops, precipitous faces and barren ap
pearance, rise continually on either
side. In tho Green river valley irri
gation has begun to change thobarron
11 ess into fruitfulness. Onward wo
speed up tho ascent of tho Wasatch
range, through Castlo Gate, whoso
warders are tho great rocks which
stand at its entrance, up tho Price
river canyon, down which Sydney
Johnston inarched his army homo
from Utah after ho had established tho
authority of our Government over tho
Mormon robr-is. Cor. Chicago Times.

Young people who inteud to learn
shorthand and tvpe-writing mav prof
itably reflect upon a remark made the
other day by a New York business
man who has employed shorthand
writers for many years." and keeps sev
eral girls busy at the type-writer. It
is so easy nowadays to learn shorthand
in our large cities, that a largo nuin
ucr 01 young men ami young women
are looking to that art, and to its as
sistant, the type-writer, as a means of
earning their subsistence. Ingenious
teachers have learned just how to help
their pupils over the difficulties, and to
get them quicklv able to "take down"
a vast number of words in a minute
But, according to our New Yorker,
the kind of person who is minted in a
business office is not one who can
merely take down two hundred words
in a minute, and then write them out
with corresponding rapidity by the
machine. He declares that he ha
tried several nice girls in his olliee
who could write well enough and fast
enough, and yet were absolutely
worthless to a busy man. He re
ceives, for example, a note asking a
favor. He writes upon tho note, in
pencil "polite no." lie wants his clerk
to write an answer refusing the favor
in a gentle, conciliatory manner, ac
cording to the nature of the request,
and the character, standing and sex ol
the applicant. This requires judg
ment and some little knowledge of thu
world. It is a simple matter, but many
short-hand writers are unable to ac
complish it. On another note, asking
an interview, the employer writes:
"Yes, to-morrow at half-past two;
here." Our New Yorker asserts that ha
has had applicants highly recommend
ed, who could not, unaided, write ac
ceptably the note required by this di
rection. Such things demand a certain
amount of tact, taste, knack, "gump
tion," which many rapid writers do
not possess, and perhaps could never
acquire.
In truth, business men scarcely ex
pect young short-hand writers to write
any thing of importance without dicta
tion. Rut here, again, if we may trust
our now Yorker, a large proportion ol
young girls are incompetent, lie says
a girl is of little use to him unless site
can spell Iiucnos Ayros or Seringapa
tuin without stopping to look it up in
the ofhec gazetteer. Ho also wishes,
not merely that she shall bo able to
spell Cicero without an but that shu
shall have some little idea whether a
man, a little girl or a piece of crockery
is meant by the word, lie goes so fur
as to say that skill in the use of short
hand and the type-writer counts for
nothing, and less than nothing, miles
that skill is supplemented by a general
knowledge of men and things, which
an intelligent mind can not help ac
quHng. but which some good and re
spectable people never acquire. Ho
sums it all up in a short, im
patient sentence: "1 want a writerthat
knows something." youth's Compan

Sumo WltiiliMoino Ailvloii for I'armors
Who Art- llli-sinl with I'lilltli-.-ii.
The farmer who would like to edu
cate his boys in the profession lie htu
cho.-en must do so practically as well
as theoretically. He must have them
in the field with him, not merely to
show them how he does a thing, but
to have them try their hands at doing
it. He should explain why this or that
is clone, and endeavor to interest thein
in the work. Too many men have an
idea that it is not worth while to spend
much time on this part of a boy's edu
cation, ami so lie grows up in ig
norance of tho whys and wherefores
he would readily understand if they
were explained to him. A boy is a
man on a small scale, and he likes to
be treated as such. Givo vour boy to
understand that you are interested in
his development, and ho will bo inter
ested in it also. Hut keep him away
from your work because he does not
know how to do it as well as you do,
anil it can not be expected that he will
know or care any tiling about it when
he becomes largo enough to do a inan'a
work. Let him grow into it by de
grees. Lead him into a practical
knowledge of what is required on the
farm by slow anil easy steps. In order
to do this, 3-011 must make a companion
of him. Talk to him, instruct him,
and have patience witli him. It took
you a long time to learn how to work
well, therefore do not expect him to do
tilings as woll as you do when ho be
gins. Do not scold him when he falls
into an error, but show him how to
correct and avoid the mistake. Gain
his onlideneo and givo him yours.
Let him feel that you trust him, and
when ho does a thing well tell him so.
A word of merited praise is tho best
kind of encouragement to givo a boy.
Ho likes to know that you appreciate
what ho has done. ' Hut, if you scold,
and fret, nnd find fault with him for
doing things wrong simply because ho
doesn't know how to do thoin right,
tho chances nro that ho won't caro
how ho does thorn. E. E. llcxford, in
