Nothing i moio disastrous (o any
community for 11 short period, (linn
tlio so-called boom. There ia per
haps a legitimate latum which is the
outgrowth of biieinc? energy mid f lie
natural facilities of a country or a por
tion or country: but tho section imi-t

ami osi-ding will most always give
a legitimate, healthy and lasting en
hancement to values and from which,
under ordinary ciionmstaneas, no ovil
results will conic. Contingiucies may
urife that may atfect for a time
some favored locality, but if precau
tion has been well taken , the results
are no! likely to affect value only
temporarily. Wo opine that nine out
of every ten truly business men dread
the outcome of these sudden rises in
real estate. One cxtron-c comes im
mediately upon the heels of another,
and tins IstM cvtrcint.- is tho one which
innKi' itself fell. It then changes
from a gentle, breeze of prosperity to a
disastrous cyclone carrying before it
the trah and superllous values. It is
changed from a sleai'y roll of legiti
mate values to an earlhquake, crashing
down anil swallowing up the impossi
bilities of unreasonable and nuwarint
able venture., Inning the ground free
only to the possibilities to be gathered
up from the wreck.
The Stain of California has been
having its professional boomers for
iliftp.W. foir bionilis, ami real clulu
3u the southern part has reached un
warrantable prices. i.UMiicss tact ,
reason and sound judgment have been
swallowed up in the whirlpool of ex
citement. Men became frenzied with
the idea that wealth was one of the
inevitables, and readily saw in their
diseased imaginations that iiiijiosni'liii
it ics were actuallv ios.iililc. The
cnitli will conic, and when it does
come ninny will bo found deeply bur
ied beneath the ilctin's of the ruins.
.A few deep scheming men will make.
money, but the country will have to ,
recover from the shock slowly, anil
the people will have learned the dear- ;
ly bought lesson, before they are i
again on their feet, that ficticious val
lies of a fabulous nature are more j
disastrous to them than years of fain- i
ino and pestilence.
Whatever En-Morn Oregon may lack :
to develop her resource.- of whatever (
kind they may be, deliver us from i
these distressing advances brought j
about by men who would have us
believe that a booming excitement is i
llnaucial prosperity. It n-iver has ;
succeeded and it never will. Kasieru !
Oregon is being built up; her agri- j
cultural facilities are being properly j
fed and nourished; her mining iudiis- ;
tries tiro rapidly being developed;
iiiiinufacturiug Interests are being
fostered, but only as fast as times
demand it. We have no reason for
becoming intpntient; we aro doing
well enough. It is dangerous to un
dertake to force our resources and
especially llcticious ones ahead of
tho natural growth of tho times. Wo
ate prosperous and happy, and we
hope to remain so, ami bo even more
so, but wo want our prosperity to
come through the legitimate channels
of trade and commerce. If we have a
good country, people of other lauds
will iiud it out and come and scUlo
among us. If wo have undeveloped
resources, no matter of what kind,
capital will lind its way here, and
those resources will be developed just
as rapidly as tho growth of the coun
try will justify development. It is
necessary to advertise our advantages
aud induce men of means to investi
gate our futuro probabilities; to In-

they believe Lieutenant Watson of tho
