CHARMING NIAGARA.
A Few Wortls About tho Xrlctitiorliontl
of the Fnmous mil.
While hundreds of tourists visit tho
Falls of Niagara every season, not 0110
in .1 thousand actually sees the viver.
But with tho "freeing of Niagara,"
celebrated by New York State and Can
ada. July 15, 1SS3, tho river exper
enced a now birth. Hereafter, in th
true spirit of this international bond,
the traveler, having enjoyed restored
nature at the points comprised within
tho limits of tho International Park
Survey, may explore Niagara river to
where, actually freed from its high,
precipitous mural boundaries, it pours
tho waters of our upper inland seas
into the broad Ontario. Here cul
minates the historic interest of the
Niagara frontier, as at th Whirlpool
modern rock-readings tell u to seek a
clew to its geolggical past. For of few
other rivers may it bo said that they
bave a threefold charm, appcalini:
alike to artist, historian and man of
science.
True lovers of Niagara hope that tho
day is not far distant when tho Inter
national Park will consist of not merely
a mile strip on tho American bank, but
a grand double boulevard, running
from Buffalo to Youngtown. and on
the Canadian cliffs from tho Horseshoe
Falls to Queeuston. As a sito for
country villas, Lowiston Ridge, with
the unnumbered beautiful drives in its
neighborhood and its picturesque his
torical associations, must, as tho cities
of Western Now York grow io wealth
and population, become not less famous
than the cliffs of Newport.
Below tho cataract, the Niagara, al
though comparatively few tourists dis
cover this fact, has a beauty and
grandeur no less imposing than the f.ills
themselves. Not content with its
mighty plunge of Hi. feet, the river
goes surging and tossing downward an
other 104 feet in its rocky bed over tho
obliterated falls of a proglaeial stiea-n,
the. remains of a third cataract bui 11 1
still perceptible in the Whirlpool Rapids.
At t!ie Whirlpool the river untwists it
self like some mighty serpent from its
sinuous contortions in this concave
prison, to pour itself an emerald-green
wave into a channel at right angles with
its former course, and henceforth trends
northeast with many : gentle curve.
Not until we reach Lewiston Ridge
do we turn our backs on the Niagara's
stupendous exhibition of power. From
this heighth, described by Father
Charlevoix as "a frightful mountain
which hides itself in clouds on which
tho Titans might attempt to scale tin
heavens," is a view worthy the expan
sive canvas of a Bierstadt. The table
land terminates abruptly in an escarp
ment. Beneath stretch biuni'lles
nioadowlands as lieh as any in agricul
tural England. They slope gently to
the river, which, coming headlong down
the gorge, with the leap and roar of the
Whirlpool upon it, gradually sub-dilo
into a tranquil stream as the bold out
lines of the banks above Lewiston fall
away into bi o, id, smiling plains. Aero--the
gorge is the Bunker Hill of Canada,
crowned by its lofi.y shaft. Fow. monu
ments in the world havo so imposing an
effect in the land-scape as tho lonely
form of Brock towering in the blue
clouds tar above the heights of Queeu
ston. Neatling under the shadow of hei
mountain is Lewiston, so named in
1S05 for Governor Morgan Lewis, of
New York. At tho extreme north, be
yond the village of Youngstown, and
commanding the angle at the headland
of river and lake, wo descry tho whole
ramparts of Fort Niagara, whence tho
gallant Poiiehot, begirt with enemies,
looked out in 1768, vainly attempting to
discover moving among the trees the
battalions of his allies from the Detroit
river. Exactly opposite Fort Niagara
lies "fair Newark, onco gay. rich and
beautiful." presenting to the water's
edge her ancient front of crumbling
fortresses anil gray church towers.

The kind of food furnished to young
animals during the earliest part of their
existence has an important inlluence
on their character and usefulness in
after life. Nearly all broods are just
what their respective breeders make of
them, and tho profit deiived from their
culture is governed, to a great extent,
by tho way thoy are fed and managed
when very young. Since so much of
thuir future usefulness and value in
after life depend upon their treatment
when young, it would amply pay the
breeder to give them a little extra at
tention at this time, and seo that every
want is supplied in the best possible
manner.
Tho troublo gonorally is that the
breeder is too anxious to have his young
slock grow fast, and oftentimes ho is
found forcing them along to early ma
turity with fattening: food. This will
give them a sleek-looking appearance,
and this is just what a groat many
breeders are working for, but which
really is a detriment to tho utility and
value of tho stock in question. hat
should bo aimed at by all breeders in
raising their farm stock is a large
frame well supplied with strong inns
eles, ami of course this can only bo ob
tained to best advantage by feeding on
tho right kind of food from tho start.
Fatty food should always be guarded
agaiiut, as excessive llesh is quite bur
densome to tho young animals, and not
what they shoui'd havo at all.
It is not the nature of young stock
to bo overfnt, and when they are found
in this condition it is a sure sign of
ovorfeoding, or injudicious feeding, to
sav tho lea!. The food thoy cut nt
this stage of their lifehouid be of such
a iinturo as to develop bono and mus
cle rapidly, and this is tlm end which
all breeders ought to work for, as it i
muoli more profitable for allcoiicuruod.
