acres of deeded land valued at $18-1,-7H6.
The total taxable property
amounts to 1550,199. In the county
there are 5,500 horses, 7,555 cattle, 2(5
985 and 2,115 hogs. The number of
poll taxes collected were (55J.
Mr. Hay Crandall, of The Dalles,
owner of the Uadger mine in the Hog
um district, was in the city recently.
He stated that a new mill and ma
chinery, would be put in the mine this
fall, if possible, or in any event by next
spring. Tke Uadger mine is on the
road leading from this place to Cornu
copia. Hoc advertisement of the fifteenth
annual fair of the Union County Agri
culture Society, which will begin on
their grounds near Island City, Oct. 3.
Mr. Lon Bemillard who was over yes
terday informs us that about 30 racers

Lodge of tho Knights of Tythiaa of tho
State of Oregon mill convone at this
place, and it is quite an honor to the
town that this remit has btou brought
about. There will bo four hundred
uniformed knights in line, which is,

formed in Pendleton. The only fear is
that there will be difficulty in securing

prohibitory amendment. The audi- ;
' once was considerably disappointed in ,
Mr. Miller as they they had been led
to believe, by the the press, that he '
was quite an orator. He is anything
else but an orator, but talks moderate
ly well, and presented some good ar
guments. He endeavors to make a
religious campaign out of this prohibi
tion move, which we think is a mis
take, for the reason that if the amend
ment is cairied at all, it must be by
the votes of the order loving people nil
over the state, regardless of their po
litical or religious beliefs. Mr. Miller
is now in the Malheur country but will
return soon, and lecture at Sparta,
Sept. 30th, at Pine valley, Oct. 1st and
at Cornucopia Oct. 2nd.

temoon a man by the name of Hoop-
engardner, who lives in the Park, while '
in a condition that Hobby Burns would
call "unco foil," was drivinc home '
from this city in a wagon, at break
neck speed, he was thrown out and re
ceived some terrible injuries about the
head, that it was thought for awhile
would prove fatal, Mr. Lore ami Mr.
Prambough who were coming to town,
discovered him lying by the road, in
sensible.and brought him in and took
him to tho poor house- Dr. Day was
summoned, who did what he could for
the unfortunate man. He did not
recover consciousness till yesterday
morning. As no bones are broken it
is probable he will be able to be out in
a few days. He lias a large family de
pendent on him for support. This epi
sode is as good a prohibition argument
as we have heard for some time,
Skhiocs Accidknt. A sad accident
befell one of Sparta's honest miners,
lastMonday, a Mr. Jacobs, the partic
ulars of which are that while engaged
in operating his placers, lie had "occa
sion to go up on the bank, which he
had no sooner done than it caved with
him, precipitating him with the large
amount of debris to the hard bedrock
in the bottom of the claim. His leg
was badly broken and crushed, and it
is the opinion of Drs. Dodson and At
wood, who went to visit the unfortu
nate man yesterday, that thu limb will
have to be amputated. We hope the
case is not so serious as reported. lin

loaded witli 10,000 pounds of flour for
the O. G. M. Co., left this week for
Cornucopia. Our friends in the min
ing districts east of here have found
out that they can do as well or better
iu Union than elsewhere, and commu
nication being much easier with this
place, the trade is rapidly being turned
this way. The teams above mentioned
will return loaded with ore from the
Iimmctt mine, which will lie shipped
to thu Portland reduction works.

hart, register of the La. Grande land
office, gives notice that all lands in
this district heretofore withdrawn for
indemnity purposes under grant to the
State of Oregon for The Dalles Milita
ry road Company, is revoked, and
lands covered thereby opened to settle
ment, and that on and after October
15th. said lands will bo open to filing
or entry.
Attkmit to Kill. Day before yes
terday some person or persons fired two
shots at a young fellow by the name of
Louis Kilburn, who lives near Haines.
One of the balls took effect in his
lothes. Louis is implicated with
some others in a house breaking case
and this is thought to be an attempt to
get rid of him, by others more guilty.

this way and will appear in this city
next Friday evening. Hob. and Eva
McGinlcy are well and favorably
known to our theatre goers, and will
doubtless draw a crowded house. Not

edian and banjoist.

load of hacks, buggies and carriages,
from tho east, will bo in Union the

county is entitled to five scholarship
in tho State University, one of which
is already taken. Anyone wishing to
make application should do so at tho
next term of thu county court, which
meets the first Monday in October.

of the railroad freight rates on hay to
Portland, to $5 per ton tho sanio as
from La Grande, an immense quantity
has been shipped from thu Union de
pot. In one day this week twenty
loads were brought in for shipment,
besides large quantities of grain.

Dr. Hobt. Thebedo, well known by a
great many people in this section, died
at Winnipeg Manitoba on the 1st inst.

Prof. Tuttle has been doing La Grande
this week in the interests of the Acme
washing machine, and is meeting with
great success.
James Bloom, of the Cove, was in
town, Thursday. Jim always has a
smile on his countenance that is "child
like and bland."
The republicans of linker City have
organized a Hubert T. Lincoln club.
The democrats will organize a Cleve
land club in a few days.
Col. Ball, superintendent of the San
ger mine, was in the city during the
week. He reports favorably on the
mines and prospects of that district.
Mr. J. A. Arinenl, land examiner
for the Lombard Investment Co., was
in town, Wednesday, looking after the
interests of his company iu Union Co.
Mrs. Osborne, of Wingville, was hero
during the week, visiting her daughter
Mrs. Warren. Shu was accompanied
by Mrs. Henry, of linker City. They
returned home yesterday.
L. J. House will establish a nursery
of choice fruit, and ornamental trees,
in Wallowa county, next spring. At
tempts have been made, and proven
that Wallowa is a very good fruit rais
ing country.
Mr. II. D. Mcrwin, who has been
on a visit to Yakima City, returned
this week bringing his daughter,
Molljc, with him. .Miss Mollio will
attend tho next term of thu Ascension
school at thu Cove.
Mr. John Wilkinson, of Higi valley,
brought into our office, this week,
