Till: Dt'VII. AND THIS! l.A'.VYKItS.
The devil came tip to the earth one day,
And into a court house wended his way,
Just as an attorney, with veiy frrao latv,
Was proceeding to argue the points in a ease.
Now, a lawyer, his ilcvilship never bad seen.
Por to bis dominions none ever had been;
And he felt very cttriniis the reason to know
Why none hud been sent to the regions be
low. 'Twits the fault of his agent, his majesty
thought,
Why none of these sharpers hail ever been
(aught;
And for his own pleasure he had a desire
To come to the earth and thu reason inquire.
Well, the lawyer who rose with visage so
gravo,
Made out his opponent n consunrite knave,
And .bedevil was. uertaiuly gieatly amused
To hear the attorney so roundly abused.
As soon as th" speaker had come to a e.loe,
ThecotlllLil opposing hini fiercely aroe.
And heaped such abuse on the bead of tho
iirst,
That made him u villian. of all men the
worst.
Tims they fuarreled, contended and argued
so long,
"f was hard to dotcrmino tho one that was
wrong;
And. concluding he'd heard quite enough
of the fu-s,
"Old Nick" turned away, and .-oliloquited
thus:
"If what they have snid of each other be
true,
Thedovil hassurely been robbed of hNduc;
lint I'm satisfied now, 'tis all very well ;
Those lawyers would ruin the "morals of
hell.
"They've puzzled the court wilji their vil
lainous cavil.
And, I'm free to confess, they have mud
dled the devil ;
My agents arc right, to let lawyers alone,
For they surely would swindle ine out of
my throne."
