Appetizing Flavors.
Some odd combinations in flavor have
been tiic result of experiment Nearly
every good housekeeper knows that
tomato catsup is greatly improved by
throwing iito the boiling pulp a good
handful of pcacli leaves. A leaf of
lemon-scented verbena is equal to pecoo
blossoms if put into a cup of fragrant
Oolong tea. Tho flavor of black
birch is very agreeable in chocolate
with which it harmonizes more finely
than vanilla, and which any one can
try by dipping a checkerberry lozenge
or two into her morning cup for
sweetening. Tho old Virginia epicure
never thinks his gumbo soup complete
unless sassafras leaves arc added. The
muscatine or frost grape, gives the
finest bouquet to all sorts of creams,
jellies and sauces, and the sharp cider
jelly, which is comparatively a new
jelly,

Swedish Wood Oil.
Wood oil is made on a large scale in
Sweden from tho refuse of timber cut
tings and forest clearings, and from
stumps and roots; and although it can
not well be burned in common lamps
on account of the heavy proportion of
carbon it contains, it furnishes a 'satis
factory light in lamps especially made
for it, and in its natural state is said to
be tho cheapest of illuminating oils.
Thirty factories produce- about 40,000
liters of the oil daily, turpentine, crc
sotc, acetic acid, charcoal, coal tar oil
and other useful substances aro also
obtained from the same material.

' The Old Lady Settled It.
Mr. Clark and his wife were going to
California, but it is just possible that
they will give up the enterprise. Jt
happened iu this way.
' Mr. Clark was reading an article
about the country from a paper sent
him, and had just reached a se'ntcnce
beginning with: "Tho mean tempera
ture of Californy," ivheu Mrs. Clark
laid down her knitting.
"That settles it," she said, taking oQ

The Etory of big winnings in Tho
Louisiana State Lottery has already
become a common one to the people of
this city, but the tale of George Mil
ler's luck in becoming rich through
tho Juno drawing possesses new phasos
of interest that make it worth telling.
The $5,000 that fell to him through
his holding a coupon bearing tho num
ber 21,058 hr.s raised him from poverty
to comparative aflluonco. Miller was
a laborer, who for two years had been
oarning a Jiving by sweeping tho
streets at night. Ho has long been a
Street Department employe, but tho
highest position he occupied has beon
tho driver of a cart. The money ho won
has been enough to set him up in busi
ness, and to-day he will open a saloon
and bo his own master. Miller states
that ho had been buying LouUiana
State Lottery- tickets every now and
then during the past two years, but in
all had not expended moro than $20
for them. IIo held but two coupons
for tho Juno drawing. He says that
Tho Louisiana Stato Lottery is, in his

GILDED FINGER-NAILS

A PnrUlnn Itlra Tliitt Hits Tnkr
Among New York' Hon To
There was a yellowish glow, like that j
of gold dollars, from the tips uf her j
fingers as she drew off her gloves. Shu
was an actress who was up to all the
latest freaks.
"Pretty, arc they not?" said she in
answer to the reporter's curious glance.
"It s the latest Pans idea gilded iin -
ger-nails
"Do you mean seriously that you
wear that stuff on your nails all 'the
time?"
"Why, certainly. Don't I tell you
it's the fashion. Pretty soon it will be
the craze. Lots of ladies have been
gilded already, and it's only a few
weeks since the fashion was intro
duced." "And pray, who is responsible for
this nonsense?"
"A French manicure, who came over
awhile ago to introduce the art. He
was a sharp fellow, and knew his busi
ness. He gilded an actress lirst with
out charge, knowing how well she
would advertise him. Sure enough she
did. There are hundreds of society
ladies who will cbpy any tiling they
see an aetre-s do, no matter how out
landish it i. It did not take them
long to tind out what it was on her
linger-nails nor where the professor's
shop was. They went there in droves.
In a short time he had more customers
than he could attend to and hired an
issistant. He is doing a rushing trade,
and turning hi idea into gold for him
self while he gihN the ladies. For
it is not a cheap adornment, under
stand." "How much does he charge?"
"A dollar a nail, three fou one hand
and live for both."
"Does it lat long?"
"A long as the nail does that is,
until it grows out. They should be
touched up every month. He' only
charges one dollar for that."
"And doesn't the gilt wash oil'?"
"No, indeed, you can't get it oil'
wasli and scrub as much as you have a
mind to. It's put on to stay."

a bother; there is no pain
It takes lots of fussinir and
preparation and two or three hours of
tedious sitting to have it done, but we
rvoiiltl endure even more than that to
he in the fa-hion, you know. I tind
the gilding awfully convenient in one
respect."
"What's that?"
"Your lingern'ails require less atten
tion then. If they are dirty it does not
show, and when they arcs long they get
dirty so easily, you know."
The reporter went up to see the
"professor" in his little shop in an up
town cross-street. A sign over the
door read, "Ladies fJilded." The pro
fessor was a dapper little man with
very white hands and an easy-running
tongue. The establishment consisted
of a small room with a lot of chairs in
it, ami at the further end an operating
table with a number of fixtures and
trappings on it in the way of brushes,
knives, files, bottles and sponges. Tho
furniture was to a certain extent ele-
'iint, and there was an air of luxury to
tho place.
"I don't want to tell vou the secret
of my art," said the professor; "that
would be very foolish of me. Stifiiee it
to say that 1 lirst wash and scrub the
nails very carefully. Then, with the
means of a certain solution, I prepare
them for gilding. There lies the secret
However, I do nothing that is iu the
least injurious to the nail, so that when
they grow out again they will bo in
their normal condition if the party
chooses."
"Where did you learn the art?"
"O, it is becoming quite- common in
Paris. As civilization advances so do
exaggerated ideas of personal adorn
ment. I presume blackened teeth will
be fashionable next."
"Do you think tho gilding business
will take in this country?"
"It has already. They aro a little
bashful about it yet, but that's only a
question of time. At present most of
the ladies have only nerve enough to
have the little linger nail decorated,
but they will get over that soon enough.
One even wanted her toe-nails gilded

Good Tnble-Talkers.
Men who can
talk well and pleas
antly at table, and especially those who
can speak and understand French, are
getting to be more and more in de
mand in society here. The two best
table talkers of late years were Charles
Sumner and Caleb Gushing, each of
whom possessed a fund of anecdote,
ready wit and many souvenirs of
travel. Mr. Sumner, vigorous, and at
times almost arrogant, was the Ajax of
table-talk, while Mr. Gushing was tho
Ulysses, subtle and insinuating, and
arraying his statements iu all tho per
suasive guises of attractive rhetoric.
Mr. Sumner was a man of profound
political convictions, whoso very table
talk bore the evidence of thoughtful
ness, learning and vigor; while that of
Mr. Gushing, on new lights iu polities,
new faces in society and new condi
tions of public affairs had force, al

had previously expressed, but to which
he did not cling. His geniality, his in
variable good humor and the results of
his studv and experience enriched his
delightful conversation. Wiishinnlon

Hee what that poputar weekly, Tht IngUtUU, said of
Dr. Harmon almost two yean ago.
"Dr. II tnnou does not claim aa much for himself as
for his srsteui. He is an KngHsh physician and does
not pretend lo perform miracles. Hut what he says
he will do ha will do. Dr Harmon wishes It particu
larly understood that any case he undertakes he will
give satisfaction or charge nothing for hla services.
More than this, his paliente may rely absolutely upon
lila discretion. Indeed, they can safely do so.
What does Dr. Harmon do towards the beauty of tbo
self Why, everything tbst science can iln. A bad
complexion vanishes under hla car In a few weeks.
A thin and wast.'d form becomes rounded and sug
gestive of every noble charm of womanhood. Dr, Har
mon has d jno no Utile good service In denouncing tho
vacuum machine horror, ao ably exposed In tbe 'Area-
Ul'. This torturing air-pump he relegates to ths times
uf the imiuisltiunasa good meana of tritng tbe souls
of martyrs, but a trammel to beautr rather thau an
fid. Any lady who wishes her eva t sparkle, her skin
to ho like satin, and her tlgure like that of a goddsss,
should consult Dr, Harmon.

the bestrla.s. Is my greatest claim on your confidence.
