    MR. AND MRS. BOWSER.
KtII KfTectt of n Kuchre rarty " the
Sweet-Tnnpered Hen it of the Family.
I would not lmvo tho world get tho
impression that Mr. Bowser is not a
kind-hearted and loving husband.
True, thero are times when ho is blunt
spoken and inconsistent, but there are
other times when he is an angel. For
instance, ho camo homo the other day
with a very tender smilo on his face,
kissed me in an unexpected and vigor
ous manner, tickled tho baby in the
ribs, and then exclaimed:
"Guess what it is, Mrs. Bowser?"
"What?"
"What's in this parcel."
I couldn't guess, and after teasing
me for a few minutes ho put his arm
around me and chuckled:
"It is for my popsy-wopv-wifcy,
and I had 'cm send to' New York for
it! Give me a kiss right on the chin?"
It was a lace collar, and tho price
mark of $22 had been carefully loft on
it. I tried hard to keep a smiling face
and not let him see iny disappointment,
and I succeeded pretty well, lie had
gone to some establishment where they
had put up a job on him. I could have
bought that s.uno collar for five dollars
when it was in style, and now tho
style was two years old. They simply
pretended to send away for it, and
they charged him twenty-two dollars
under the idea that he was some coun
try widower. I felt like crying, but
managed to say:
"Now, dear, how good and thought
ful of you! You are the best of hus
bands!" "Of courso I am, my pet. Didn't I
marry you for pure love? And isn't a
loving husband one of the best of hus
bands? We are to go over to Sykoffs
to-night to a progressive euchre party,
and I got tho collar just in good time.
You'll 1)0 the envy of all the ladies.
Hip-la! Nicest little wife and prettiest
babj' in the world!"
I wanted to get out of wearing that
collar without, injuring his feelings,
and so I sent mother down to exchange
it. She could lind nobody to take it,
but brought home one for four dollars
which would do very well, considering
that I am a plain woman and never at
tempt any stylo. Poor, dear Bowser
couldn't tell the diflerenee, but when
he saw me with it on ho patted me on
the head and observed:
"Ah! ha! little sweetness, but may
be 1 haven't got taste and don't know
what becomes you! Now you look like
a lady! Now you have some style
about you! And just remember that I
selected that pattern!"'
I praised him and called him my
dear Bowser, and ho went about the
house looking so happy that the cook
finally came to mo and whispcringly
inquired:
"Have you telephoned yet?"
"To whom for what?"
"To tho police!"
"What for?"
"To bo on hand in caso ho becomes
dangerous. I'm expecting every min
ute when he'll give a grand yell and
rush for tho axe and chop us to
pieces!"
"Why, Sarah, nothing ails Mr.
Bowser."
"Well, I hope not I hope not. but I
shall leave tho back door open and bo
prepared to run. When some folks
are on the point of ;oing crazy they
smile and grin and act up just as ho is
doing to-day."
Asa rule, when I am getting ready
to go out with Mr. Bowser he jumps up
from tho supper table to give his boots
three rubs with the brush to wallop
his hair with the comb for fifteen sec
onds to rub his plug hat on his
elbow, and then to begin on mo with:
"Come, now, but we shall bo late! I
.never saw how long it docs tako you to
get ready! I suppose you'd want to
stop and prim) and paint and fix and
look just so nice if you were going to
bo hung!"
This evening ho took twenty minutes
to get himself ready, and then sat down
to his cigar and said:
"No hurry, dear! Take all tho time
you want to. If wo happen to bo late
I'll telephone for a coupo to tako us
over."
On the way over foSykolY'sMr. Bow
ser put his arm around me. and lie
kissed the baby before wo started and
he said to the cook as wo went out:
"Sarah, if your John Henry comes
around this evening you can open a
bottle of that wine, and tell him I'll
pay the preacher when you aro ready
to bo married."
I would that I could continue tho
record of Mr. Bowser's good ilcods a
few hours longer, but I must stick to tho
truth. Tho evening was not half over
when I observed a chango on his face
and realized that somothing was
wrong. Wo had scarcely left tho house
after tho party broke up when he gave
my arm a pinch and exclaimed:
Now, then, I want you to under
stand that this is tho last infernal
euchre party you will over drag mo off
to."
"Why, doar. what's tho matter?"
"Don't why dear me, for I won't
stand it! You looked like a basswood
stick and I felt like a fool, and wo had
no business going!"
"But you wanted to go."
"'0h! I did! Perhaps you aro a mind
reader! If so, you had hotter start out.
and run opposition to Bishop! You
know I consented to como just to ac
commodate you, but I don't do it
again!"
"But you were so good-natured all
tho afternoon."
"I was. eh! Well, that shows all you
know about it, and I won't speak to
you again to-night!"
And ho didn't. Detroit Free Press.

Statistic Itclntlng to the Population nnd
ltimlncm of the Mcxlcnn Capital.
It is difficult to get statistics of Mex
ico, and oven tho population of its cap
ital has for years been a matter of con
jecture. A Mexican linn. Messrs. Pridu,
Navarro & Co., some time ago took a
contract to get statistics of the City of
Mexico. They make tho population
out to bo 292, 71 C. They furnish also
the following particulars: The City of
f(ivtf rwn i i r i ? 1)70 Ktti liltm.? imIh.I
pat s?lM,733,000! These figures do not
include public or Government build
ings, churches, private hospitals, etc.,
which would greatly increase both the
number anil value of edifices. Thero
arc in the city 7,047 commercial and in
dustrial establishments, of which the
following aro the most important as to
numbers: 1,072 tobacco stores, 831) gro
cery stores. G70 pulque stands, M4 li
quor saloons, 390 restaurants, 275 but
cher simps. 190 bakeries. 141 grain
stores, 130 barber shops, 118 tailoring
establishments, 171 carpenter shops,
174 shoe stores, 88 blacksmith shops,
79 drug stores, G8 hardware stores.
fG printing offices, 6,r bath houses,
72 dry goods stores, IS banks (char
tered and private), and IG cafes. Tho
7,047 commercial and industrial estab
lishment pay an annual municipal tax
of $I4,7.)S. Besides tho National
Monte de Piedad, or Government pawn
shop, there are seventy-three pawn
shops in the city, representing a capi
tal of 483,872. In tho second half
y;ar of lSSii these houses loaned the
sum of $1,333,796 on pledges of all
kinds, on which an average monthly
interest of 12J per cent was paid, and
for tho same period they paid a total
tax of $1G,G72. There arc nine cotton,
three woolen and seven paper factories
in the city and its suburbs. Thero aro
316 schools and colleges in tho city,
with 712 male and 469 female teach
ers, and an average daily attendance of
12,775 boys and 10,385 girls, or a total
Tlaily average of 23,160. Fully one
half of the above schools aro supported
by the Federal and municipal Govern
ments at an annual expense of $816,
840. Among theso educational estab
lishments should be mentioned the
Academy of Fine Arts, tl,o mining,
engineering and medical schools and
tho military, law, commercial and
agricultural colleges, where all who
desire, irrespective of religion, nation
ality, race, color or social condition
may obtain good education and learn
some trade or profession free of charge.
Thero aro thirty-two lines of street

THE BEGINNING OF TFE END.
The beginning of disease is a slight debility
or disorder of some of the vital organs, the
stomach, tho liver or tho bowels usually. There
arc dyspeptic symptoms, the liver is trouble,
some, the Bkin rowB tawny and unhealthy
looking, there aro pains in the right side or
through tho right shoulder blade. Tho climax
is often an utter prostration of the physical en
ergies, perhaps a futal tbstie. But if the dllll
culty is met In timo with Hostetter's Stomach
Hitters, which is always Directive as a remedy,
and it should be re6ortcd to at an early stage,
there will bo no reaton to apprehend those in
jurious subsequent cH'cots upon the system
'often entailed by entirely cured diseases. Kar
better 1b it, also, to employ this safe remedial
agent in fever and ague, and other malarial
complaints, than qulnlno and other potent
drugs, which, even when they do prove ellVot
ual for a time, ruin tho stomach and impair tho
general health.
