Uynamite tor Pile-Driving.
A Gorman engineer nppe.r- to liavo
been the pioneer in tin use of dynamite
for driving pile.-.. According to this
method a eireular cast-iron plate, lifteen
inelie- in diameter and three, and three
fourths inehe- thick is lixed on the pile
to be driven in a perfectly horizontal
position. This being done, a dvnaniitc
cartridge n.ide in the form of a disk,
six inches in diameter and three-fourths
of an inch thick, and containing seven
teen and one-half ounces of dvnainite,
is placed upon t In east-iron plate and
exph-ded bv eleetrieitv. It is stated
that the depth to which tho pile is driven
by eaeli explosion is equal to live blows
of an ordinary pile engine weighing
fourteen and three-fourths Vienna liun
dred-wcight, falling nine feet ten inches
As it is lounil tnat a east-iron plate is
eiiual, on an average to resisting some
twenty-live cxplo-ions, the practical
twine of this. method may be readily
fudged. .V. F. Sun.

No little b 'ptles or serpents have as

Sir'Goorgo Strahan, having served

Hong Kong. His entry into the Colo
nial .-erviee was after this fashion: At
a certain dinner Air. Gladstone made
an error in a Greek quotation, and
Strahan, then a young and unknown
ollieer in the Hoyal Artillery, corrected
him. Air. Gladstone took thu correc
tion kindly, inquired who tho young
man was, and made him his private
secretary when ho was High Commis
sioner of the Ionian Islands. There
after tho career of the young artillery
man was steadily upward.

where excision was practiced. The
longest duration of lifo in eases nol
operated upon is twelve years; in those
operated upon, eighteen years. While
these statistics go to prove that opera
tion prolongs life, they do not prove an
ultimate cure. Dr. Oldokop shows in
his report that out of 2'2) ea-es where
operations hail been performed twenty
three recovered. Dr. Willard Parker
believed in operations for the disease.
In a paper read before tho Medical
Journal Association in September, 187.1,
ho reports fourteen eases of cure by
exei.-ion, the patients being in good
health at the ends of periods varying
from three to twenty-seven years.
A mass of statistics might be brought
to show that in many instances cancer
has been radically cured, and in other
'.ases life lias been indelinitely pro
longed by tho use of the knife. A few
.-peeial eases will serve to show this.
Dr. Weir reports a ease in which the
right breast was amputated by Dr.
James H. Wood in l:jtj. In 18G7 Dr.
Post amputated the left breast. In
187.) Dr. Weir removed a recurrent
growl li from the right side, and again
in 1S77 and 1KS0, the patient finally dy
ing of tho disease twenty-live years
after its fnt appearance. ' Dr. Frank
II. Hamilton operated upon a patient
who survived the excision twentv
years, and another patient of his whose
breast was entirely removed, survived
tiie operation for ten years. Cases of
this description might Ik- multiplied.
Pr. Shrady; General Grant's physician,
claims that the disea.-e is organic anil
in no way Hereditary. He believes
that its origin is local, and is therefore
removable, and that the constitution
becomes all'ected only secondarily by a
more or less widespread diemination
of original cancer germs. The failure
of one excision to elluct a cure in no
wise disconcerts him. The disease is
insidious, and a careful miero.-eopie ex
amination is necessary to follow its va
rious ramifications. Where the growth
is not in elo-e proximity to the vital or
gans, operation after operation nwiy
be tried with impunity. In the ease of
General Grant, the entire throat was
allected and an operation meant cer
tain death, otherwise an operation
would have been tried. It is an excep
tion for more than one member of a
family to become the victim of cancer.
In fact it may be confidently said that
no human being can be sure of escap
ing the disease until he has passed till
age of its occurrence, which is when
his vital machinery is entirely worn
out. In other words lie can never bo
considered fortunate in respect to can
cer until ho is dead .V. J". Mad ami

F0K GOOD PURPOSES.
Mrs. M. A. Dauphin, of Philadelphia, is
well known t the ladies of that city from
the great good she has done by means of
Lydia E. Pinkhani's Vegetable Compound.
She writes Mm. Pinkhani of a recent in
teresting case. "A young married lady
came to mo suffering with a severe case of
Prolapsus and Ulceration. Sho com
menced takinc the Compound, anil in two
months was fully restored. In proof of
this she soon found herself in an Interest
ing condition. Influenced by foolish
friends she nttemnteu to evade tlic respon
sibilities of maturity. After ten or twelve
Uays she came to me again and she was in
deed in a most alarming state aud suf
fered terribly. I gave her a table-spoonful
of the compound every hour for eight,
hours until she fell asleep, she awoke
much relieved and evidently better. Sho
continued taking the Compound, and in
duo season she became thu mother of a
lino healthy boy. Hut, for the timely use
of the medicine, she believesherlife would
have been lost."

I am not versed in the killing ways of
this species of tho Saurian tribe," and,
though alligators aru by no means un
common pets in the .North, I never
happened to be thu prowl possessor of
one until recently. Tin's little creature
traveled in a box all the way from
Florida, and when lie arrived, after his
four days' iournev, had annarentlv
iven up tho giio-t. There lie lav on
his back, eyes shut, his hands clenched,
his fi;et in the air in fact, dead as n
door nail. A (iood Samaritan sur-
gested, as lie was not still', a warm
bath might revive him, and so into
water lie was tenderly dropped, with
tho reflection that the taxidermist
would see him later. Hut not so! An
hour after a bark no bigger than the
sound cinitteirbya toy dog warned me
eet and looking unutterable tilings.
Since then tiiis infant lias been as live
ly as ten crickets. It is impossible to
keep track of him and the eat at the
same time, so when one is taking its
airing tho other is shut in tho closet.
In tho meanwhile tho nativo of Florida
refuses to partake of food. Indeed I
have not been able to see if that historic
jaw has any hinge to work it, for
though lie seems to enjoy tho petting
lie receives, especially being rubbed on
