Our city school closed to-day, and
to-mormw will have a grand picnic at
Oro Dell or on the. mountains, to cele
brate the event.
School began in September and for
eight months the bell lias been ring
ing and the children have been going
and coming with books in hand some
merry and koine sad, but now they arc
all glad, fur the outdoor attractions an
niu.-li greater than those within, du
ring this lovely spring weather.

school opened in La Grande, has hot

children than during the last year, and
never before litis the attendance been
s-o large, during the winter term, and
at this time more than ISO are in ac
tual attendance.
Prof. J. II. Mclntyro, who is a grad
uate of Colby College, Maine, is the
principal, and having liad several year's
experience as a, teacher hero in the
West, seems to be completely master
of the situation, both as disciplinarian
and instructor, and from him the "big
boys" have learned more things than
one. In his room, which is the High
school department, everything moves
along like clock work, with no apparent
etl'oj t on 1 lis part.
In charge of the Grammar depart
ment is Mrs Dora Scott, who litis taught
a number of years in Ohio before com
ing West, and for two years in this
school. Mrs. Scott lias the reputa
tion of being of superior merit for im
parting instruction, but she holds tho
reins with a rather loose grasp, and as
a consequence tho principal is often
called in to administer discipline.
The Intermediate grade is now pro
sided over by Mrs. Nellie Watson, who
during tho pafcl yenr luis heen teaching
in Union, but when Mrs. Hughes re
signed about a month ago, enmo here
to take her place. Mrs, W. is a teach
er of considerable experience, having
taught in several of the eastern stales,
before coming here. She seems to be
a very successful teacher, but is some
what nervous and exacting in the
school room, and a a consequence the
scholars do not like her quite so well
at first as they would one who was
more lenient with them.
In the Primary department is Mrs.
Wellnian, who, having no children of
her own, seems perfectly at homo
among tho fifty-seven little folks who
belong in her room. Eor ten years
Mrs. Wellnian taught in the Primary
schools o Portland, and with that ex
perience, added to a natural adaptabil
ity for the work, she makes a complete
success.
Whether or not theso teachers have
been engaged for another year we do
not know, hut it seems as though they
ought to be retained, for good teach
ers are not always to be found.
On last Thursday night, Mr. Andrew
Dray died of dropsy of the heart, after
being confined to his bed for two weeks.
Mr. Dray was 72 years old. and an old
resident of La Grande, and had accu
mulated considerable property here
and elsewhere, which he leaves to his
three sons, of whom Henry Dray of
thto place is the youngest. His funer
al took place on Saturday, conducted
hy iho .Masons, at which time quite a
number of tho order were present from
other placet), and a largo procession
followed his remains to the grave.
Tho Uaptists raised tho new hell in
to the bell-tower of their church, yes
terday. Tho Episcopalians voted to move
their church down here, but have not
yet furnished the money.
Mr. Ilium is now the proud father
of a bouncing hoy, horn on Tuesday
morning.

tion. Mr. II. L. Alexander and son, Fred,
are home, after a long stay in Harney
Valley.
Mr. Cluts. Goodnotigh has recently
wrought a noticeable change in the ap
pearance of the house vacated by Mr.
W. Walters. The residence has been
renovated, the fence enclosing the
ground repaired, and the whole inside
repainted.
F.dward Holmes, who has been clerk
in the drug store of Hill & Holmes for
tho past three years, goes to San Fran
cisco to-day, (Tuesday) to attend tho
Medical University of California.
While his many friends regret his de
parture, they should remember as di

this much cussed official.
Messrs Hardy it Mann have leased
the Hurst building, and will put in a
tine stock of liquors it cigars, for sale at
both wholesale and retijil.
There is not a house for rent in Cor
nucopia, although every mail brings
application of business men for houses.

Tho enow has almost all disappeared
from our streets, Many of tho claims
are now bare, and there is nothing now
to prevent work being prosecuted on

George 0. Newcomb is now regular
ly installed book-keeper for the O. 0.
M. Co. George is a line penman and
accountant, and although he has lost a
few hundred pounds superfluous flesh
a change of occupation will no doubt
be good for him.
The O. G. M. Co. have increased
their force to 70 men and enlarged
their plans from a 20 to a -10 stamp
mil). They are now boarding their
men in thecoinpanys boarding house,
and supply their table with the very
best of everything.
The machinery is now on tho road
from Paker City for the "Hope" mill,
consisting of pans and Fottlew, Tho
mill is expected to bo running at full
blast by tho first of June, a San Fran
cisco Co. having purchased it from tho
Toleman, Torrey it Co.

Messrs. Howard it Shea have opened
a line saloon in tho Hears building.
They will carry an immense stock of

their retail business, do a jobbing busi
ness. Sixteen men were put to work this
morning to open the road to tho IIopo
mill. The machinery is expected in
by tho latter end of the week and every
thing points to a prosperous, mimmer
in Cornucopia.

but it is to early hy two weeks for ex
