Itl Clover.
A corresnomicnt of the Oregonian,
writing from Oswego, Oregon, cays:
Red clover is the great renovating
plant. It is universally esteemed the
best plant with which to restore worn
out or overcropped soils. In fact there
is no other way in which this can be
done so easily and cheaply as by
green immuring with clover. Farmers
who have exhausted their lands by
succesMve cropping with grain or
timothy are resorting to clover and
stock as their only hope. Commercial
fertilizers aro out of the question, and
barnyard manures cannot he procured
in Biillicieut quantity. Here clover
comes in as a benificient gift, enabling
the intelligent farmer to maintain or
restore the fertility of his land, and at
the same timo replenish his pifrse.
For pasture, no grass that I have
ever tried begins to bo equal to clover,
cither in quantity or richness of crop.
All grazing animals are fond of it and
do Well on it. 1 have seen hogs made
ready for the butcher on clover alone.
Clover is the only grass that ought
ever to be sown in an orchard. All
others are positively injurious, as they
extract tho moisture when it is most
needed by tho trees, and impoverish
the soil. Jin t clover either pastured
oy hogs or left to rot on the grouirtl is
a benefit. Now, one would naturally
expect that a plant which, in its green
state is bo rich in all tho elements of
nutrition, would be good in proportion
when dried, for the drying and curing
process only eliminates the water.
And so we find that for buy no other
one gra&s is quite equal to clorer. For
milk cows nothing is so yood, as all
intelligent dairymen know, and beef
cattle can be kept fat all winter on
good clover liny alone. I know there
is among many horsemen a prejudice
against clover h y as a fodder for
horses, but there is no foundatson for
this prejudice, cither in tho analysis of
k the plant itself or in the experience of
those who have used it. It is said t!;at
clover hay will give horses the heaves.
Probably it will if it is spoiled in cur
ing, so will timothy or any other hay,
and timothy, though not. musty, is apt
to be very dusty if not cut at just the
right time. I have fed my horses on
clover for the last twenty years, and
have never had a euso of heaves,
neither have any of my neighbors,
and they all feed clover almost exclu
sively, with 'one or two exceptions.
Timothy is constipating, and horses
fed on it alone are apt to have stag
gers. Clover is somewhat loosening,
and mixed with timothy counteracts
the binding effect of the latter, thus
making a perfect ration. I am fully
satisfied that the use of clover as a
food for horses will rapidly increase as
the years go bv, and experience proves
its value.
Our practice has been and still is to
Vow elovor in the spring with oats,
plowing tho ground if possible in the
fall or winter. The seeding should be
done as eaily as thd ground will
permit. First wc sow the grain and
thoroughly harrow it, which pulverizes
the soil to the depth of two or three
inches. Now we sow tho clover seed,
using eight pounds to tho acre if
clover alone is sown, but if timothy is
mixed, six of clover and four of timo
thy. This will make the crop thick
enough if it is put in right. Wo finish
the opera'ion by running a clod
crusher or roller over the Held, pre
terms the crusher if the ground is as
dry as it ought to be. This "linns" or
presses the earth around the seed, and
does not cover too deep. The result is
ithe seed all comes up and grows more
Vapidly than if closely brushed in.
Clover likes a (inn subsoil, and only
requires an inch or so of line soil on
the surface in which to start. Its long
tap root finds no diiiioulty in pene
trating the hardest soil. Land plaster
sown at tho rale of a barrel to lour or
Vive acres, if suwu caily in the spring,
will always insure a gooil crop, even
in the dryost season.
Clover is a biennial plant with pe
rennial qualities. Sometimes it gives
us four or more crops, and sometimes
it dies out in three years. So it has to
bo renewed often, but this is no objec
tion, as every time wo break up a field
of clover we have a mass of roots equal
to a fair coating of manure. Clover
makes its growth early in ihe season,
and should be cut soon after it is in
full bloom, usually early in June.
Heroin lies tho only real difficulty
with clover, as at this time wo are apt
to have rains, aud as clover is some
what slow in curing it is frequently
damaged and sometimes entirely
spoiled. To avoid this it should be
igot into the barn as soon after it is cut
fas possible. To facilitate and hasten
this curing and housing tho various
labor-saving implements and appli
nncos must bo resorted to. Besides the
mower, every fanner who raises much
hay snonld possess a good hay tedder,
Vulky rako and horso fork, and the
neighbors who aro individually unable
to buy thoir implements should co
operate in their purchase and use.
All thoso thincR are expensive, but
their uso often makes tho difference
netween saving a crop and losing it.
4 He tedder is a tool of tho greatest
value, but not yet appreciated. It is
only a question of a little time when
its merits will be bettor known and its
use gonoral. With it elovor can be
curod In half the time it usually tak s
and enrod much more uniformly.
Clover should never bo cut whon the
dow is on, and it is not host to get too
much down at once whon the weathor
is "catching." A most oxoellont plan
is to commence mowing at 10 or 11
o clock and continue till night As
,1,..., :., ,iv ii. -

JS iB start tho toddor and kOap it going
y-v V',lJl noon constantly, exposing the
prnss tn the -Irvine intlucnce of the
sun and air. After dinner it can be
j -.m lniu medium-sized cocks for a day
or two, or if the weather be uncertain
carried dirucily from the windrow to
the barn. By this plan the hay is
tedded or scattered while it is simply
wilted, and we avoid knocking off the
the leaves. But if left in tho swath till
dry enough to rake, the top is so dry
that the leaves fall off and the stalks
break up, while the bottom of the
swath is yet damp and uncured. The
ue of the tedder enables us to get the
clover in much sooner and better. It
is a very nice point to decide when the
hay is just dry enough to prevent too
much heating in the mow. If it is
line it requires a little less airing ; if
coarse ami heavy a little more. All
this applies equally to tho curing of
other grasses, though they are more
easilv managed and generally ripen
later.
Figs should bo picked when the skin
is fully cheeked, that is to say, when
it shows small white seams upon the
surface, by which time tho fruit has
reuched its maturity. It must be
dried upon trays in the sun. Care
should bo taken that it is turned over
at least once a day, until the greenish
tinge entirelv disappears, when the
fruit is ready to be taken in doors for
packing. While drying the figs should
never be left out in the open air after
f o'clock in the evening, nor should
they be exposed to the sun again until
all the tlew is dispersed in the morn
ing, as the least moisture will entirely
spoil thuir flavor and appearance, and
render them unlit for use. Avoid
pneking windfalls, because they are
utterly woithless for eommerc;al pur-po.-ex
and will greatly detract from the
value of a whole consignment per
haps lead to its final rejection. Before
packing the figs should bo hastily
dipped into clean, boiling - hot sea
water, to guard against all danger of
attack from the worm, so destructive
to the fruit ; then properly packed and
thoroughly pressed in tin cans, her
metically sealed and labeled. In all
easis the fig should be left in its natu
ral state and sugar or other confections
discarded. Tliesa directions must bn
stiicily observed if one wishes to obtain
a choico article that will command
ready sale and top prices in the market.
Even our common black fig, treatid
according to tho nboye method, will
"astonish the natives."

Fowls to lay well should have access
to raw bones ground or pounded up
fine; ground bone being preferable, as
there is less waste and is more easily
digested and assimilated. If freshly
ground, raw bones are more nutritious
than when burned. If they can be
obtained conveniently, ground or
pounded oyster shells aro good and
economical to feed to laying lions,
which, of course, should be fed regu
larly on good wholesome grains and
food, placed in such a way that the
birds will have to take plenty of exer
cise in getting it.

In an area embracing less than one
half of tho Horre Heaven region, W.T.,
2000 acres have been planted with
Indian corn this season. The lower
Yakima country is proving well
idapted to that crop,
drv piece of ground should bo
selected in which to build the poultry
house. The ground, if well under-
drained and prepared by putting on a
thick layer of sand and fine gravel,
will be much better than a board lloor
for the fowls.
It is said that a train load !530 cattle,
from Cotulla, Texas, winch had been
fattened on prickly pear and cotton
seed meal, was lately marketed in
Chicago. They attracted considerable
attention, being the first largo lot of
cattle ever fed that for market.
Turpentine will kill the scale pests
and will not injure the trees in the least
to which it is applied. The turpentine
should bo put on tho trees with a brush,
jiHt as varnish is applied to furniture,
and the results of the application aro
aid to be satisfactory. It is a cheap
remedy at all events and is worth
while trying.
According tho San Francisco Mer
chant there are now in California at

planted in vines is not less than lbU.OOU

least 40,000, who, with their families,

Tho great flow of milk of cows is
trulv artificial. In a state of naturo
tho cow f'ives only tho necessary
quantity, and gives it only the neces
sary timo to sustain the calf. Tho
greater and longer yield of milk is the
result of better feeding, hotter treat
ment and longer manipulation of tho
the teats. Hence, to increase the yield
of milk, feed and milk well.
