simply of a strong determination to

casc., however, the indulgence lias pro
duced a complete paralysN of will
power, and then sonic method of judi
cious medical treatment is necessary,
although even then success does not al
ways follow. An account of the in
genious mode of efl'ecting the cure of a
long-indulged opium habit is given in
The Medical World by Dr. U. II. Dal
ton. The patient was lirst allowed for
a week to take her usual quantity of
morphine in the form of a mixture con
taining also iivo drops of nux vomica
and one quarter of a grain of quinine
in each dose, ajjd colored with tincture
of lavender. Then for twenty weeks
tho amount of morphine was lessoned
every seven days ono twentieth, and, at
the samo time, the tincture was in
creased ono drop and tho quinino by
ono-quartcr grain at each change until
tho morphine was left entirely out. In
tho meantime, however, tho quinino
was not augmented after tho ninth
week, but ten drops of elixir of vitriol
added to eacli dose taken afterward.
The diminution of morphine, was min
uto and gradual, tho taste being the
same, tlio patient was unable to detect
any change whatever during tho four
months' treatment. As soon as Dr.
Dalton became satisfied that the habit
was entirely in the mind, ho announced
that she had not taken a, particle of
morphine for two weeks. As soon as
sho understood this the spell was bro
ken and she wanted no more morphine;
her health had become very much im
proved, and her gratitude seemed un
bounded. Dr. Dalton .says that if re
course to stimulants bo prevented dur
ing Hie curing of the opium habit any
physician may bo successful with this
plan. British and Colonial Druggist.
