    I LOVE YOU.
Bhe climbed upon my willing knee.
And softly whispered unto mc,
"I loyc you."
Iler dainty arms were round my neck.
Iter sunny curls were In my face;
And In her tender eyes I saw
j The soul of Innocence and grace.
And like a sunbeam glhitlng through
The clouds that hide the klcs of blue,
Jlcr ismllo found ncccM to my heart,
And hade the shadows oil depart
0 moment of apocalypse,
In which I saw the stately ships,
That erstwhile Failed away from me.
Come riding back across the sea,
1 would you might return and stay
Within my lonely heart alway.
God bless the darling little child,
Who looked up In my face and smiled:
And wrought upon my heart a spell
More tweet than songs ot IsrafcL
O angclf, listen while I pray
That you will make her life as sweet
As that brief moment was to me,
Whene'er I betrd her lips repeat,
"I love von."

Torouthal, hardly knowing what had

Doctor's power, and the pursuit of Sar
cany would Do resumed as soon as
opportunity offered. Tho agents
entrusted with tho discovery of Muuumo
Buthory's retreat, wero still unresting in
their endeavors but with no result
Since his mother had disappeared with
only old Borik to holp her, Pierro'a
anxiety had been constant. What con
solution could tho Doctor givo to that
twice-broken heart ? When Piorro spoko
of his mothor how could ho holp think
ing of Suva Torouthal, whoso namo waB
uuvor mentioned lwtween them ?
Maria Ferrato occupied ono of tho
prettiest houses in Artenak. It was
closo to tho Stadthaus. Thero tho Doc
tor's gratitude had endeavored to ensure
her all tho comforts of life. Hor brothor
lived near hor, when ho was not at sea,
occupied on somo sorvico of transport
or survoillance. Not a day closod with
out hor visiting tho Doctor, or his going
to boo her. His afTecu'i for tho children
of tho fisherman of ltoviguo increased
as ho knew them hotter.
"How hnppy wo aro!" said Maria,
very ofton;"if Pierro could only bo so!"
'Ho cannot bo so, Luigi would

but I have not lost all hopo of that
Maria, with tho Doctor's means, wo

'And I also havo that hopo, Luigi!
But if ho got baok his mother, would
ho be happy ?"
"No, Maria, that would bo impossible,
until Suva Torouthal is his wife !"
"Luigi," answered Maria, "is that
which seems impossible to man, impos
sible to God ?"
When Pierre had told Luigi that thoy
wore Urothors, lio did not thou know
Maria Ferrato, ho did not know what a
sister, tender aud dovotod, he would
find in her I And when ho had become
nblo to apprcciato her, ho had contlded
to her all his troubles ! It soothed him
n littlo to talk them ovor to her. What
ho could not say to tho Doctor, what ho
had been forbidden to say to hiiu, ho
could say to Maria. Ho found, then, a
loving heart, open to all compassion, n
heart that understood him, that consoled
him, u soul that trusted in God, and did
not know despair.
lu tho casemates of Antokirtta thoro

Sarcany'a power. It was tho man who
had passed her oil' as his daughter
Silas Torouthal. But out of respect to
his father's memory, Piorro would never
speak to him on tho subject.
iiiver since his capture, Torouthal had
been in such a stato of mind, in suoh
physical and montnl prostration that he
could huvo told nothing, oven if it had
boon to his interest to do so. But ho
would gain no advantage in revealing
what ho know of Suva, for ho did not
know on tho ono hand that ho was Doc
tor Antokirtta's prisoner, and on tho
other, that Piorro Bathory was alive ou
this island of Autekirtta, of which tho
namo ovon was unknown to him.
So that as Maria Ferrato said. God
ulono could unravel tho myitory !
AO sketch of tho smto of tho colony

Although Sarcany had m:nagod to

capture of Toronthnl hud boou of suoh
importance that Point Poseudo was over
whelmed with thanks. And whon tho
Doctor was satisfied, the two friends
wero quito satistlrd with themselves.
They had again takon up their quarters
in their pretty cottage, nndwuitod rtady
for auy service that might bo roquired,
hoping that they would still bo of use to
tho good cause.
Sinoo their return to Antokirtla, thoy
had visited Maria and Luigi Ferrate,
and then they had called on soreral of
tho notables of Artenak. Everywhere
they wero warmly welcomed, for orery
whoio they wero esteemed. It was
worth a journey to seo Capo Matifou

necessary, Capo Matifou and Point Pes
cade would not hesitate to resume theii
old profession, and astonish thoir Auto
kirttiun audiences with thoir woudors ol
acrobacy !
Till that happy day arrived, Point
Pescado and Capo Matifou improved
their garden under tho shado of the
lingo trees, and their cotUgo was hidden
beneath its masses of bloom. Tho work
at tho littlo dock begau to grow into
shape. To seo Capo Matifou lifting and
carrying tho hugo masses of rock, was
convincing enough that tho Provencal
Hercules had lost nono of his prodigiour
strength.
ThoDoctor's correspondents had found
no trace of Madame Bathory, and thoy
wero equally unsuccessful with regard
to Sarcany. Thoy oould find no trace
of his movements since ho left Monto
Carlo.
Did Torouthal know what had becomo
of him? It was at tho least doubtful,
considering tho oircumstancos undoi
which thoy had soparuted on tho road to
Nico. And admitting that ho know
would ho consent to say ? Impatiently
did tho Doctor wait until tho banker
was in a fit state to be questioned.
It was in a fort at tho uorth-wost
angle of Artenak that Torouthal and
Curpena had boon aoourod in tho most
rigorous secrecy. Thoy woro known to
each other, but by name only, for the
banker had never boon mixed up with
barcany s bioilian aflairs. And so thoro
was a formal order against their being
nllowed to suspect each other's presence
in tins fort. Thoy ocoupied two caso
matos far apart from each other, and thoy
camo out for exercise at ditl'eront hours
in different courts. Sure of tho (ldolity of
those who had charge of them two of
tho militia sergeants of Antekirttu tho
Doctor could bo certain that no commu
nication could take place botweon them.
Ami there was no indiscretion to fear.
for" nono of the questions from Torouthal
and Carpena us to where thoy wero, had
been replied to, or would bo replied to.
And there was nothing to lead them to
mipposo that thoy had fallon into tho
hands of tho mysterious Doctor Anto
kirtt, whom Torouthal had ouco or
twico met at Bngusa.
But to find Sarcany, to carry him off
like his accomplices, was now tho Doc
tor's object And on tho 10th of October,
having learned that Torouthal was now
strong enough to roply to any questions
that might be put to him, ho resolved to
proceed with his examination.
To begin with, tho subject was talked
over by tho Doctor, Piorro uud Luigi
nnd Point Pescado, whoso advieo was
not. lo bo despised.
Tho Doctor informed them of his
iutontions.
"But," said Luigi, "but to ask" Tor
outhal if ho knows anything about Sar
cany is enough to make him suspect that
wo want to got hold of him."
"Woll," replied the Doctor, " whatdoes
it matter if Torouthal does know, that
now ho cannot oscape us ?"
"Ono thing," ausworod Luigi, "is
Uiat Torouthal might think it to be to
his interest to say nothing that might
damage Sarcany."
"And why ?"
"Bocaubo it might damajre him."
" May 1 mako an obsorvutien ?" naked
Pfscado, who was seated a littlo apart
"Certaiuly, my friend!" eaid tho
Doctor.
"Owing," Baid Point Pescado, "to
tho peculiar circumstances under which
these goutlomeu parted, I have reason
to believe that thoy are not likely to
caro very much for each other. Mr.
Torouthal must very cordially hate Mr.
Sarcany for leading him to his ruin. If,
then, Mr. Toronthnl knows where Mr.
Sarcany is to Ih found, ho will havo no
hesitation in telling youat least I think
not If ho says nothing, it is because
ho has nothing to say."
Tho reasoning wus ut least plausible.
It wus very likely that if tho banker did
know whero Sarcany had gono to, ho 1
would willingly reveal tho secret, for
his true interest was to break with him.
"Wo ahull know to-day," said tho
Doctor ; "and if Torouthal knows noth
ing, or will toll us nothing, I will seo
what next to da But as ho must bo
kept ignorant that ho is in tho powor
of Doctor Antekirtt, and Unit Pierro
Bathory is alive, it must bo Luigi's
task to examine him."
I ant at your orders, Doctor." said
the mate.
Luigi then went to tho fort, and was
admitted iuto the casemate which served
as TorouUiol's prison.
Tho banker was seated in a corner at
a table. Ho hod just left his bed.
Thero could bo no doubt that ho was in
much better health. It was not of his
ruin that lie was now thinking, nor of
Sarcany. What was troubling hiin was
why nnd whero ho was in prison, and
who was the powerful individual that
had earned him off.
When ho saw Luigi Ferrato enter, ho
aroso ; but nt a sign he resumed his
scat Tho following dialogue then
ensued:
"Yon are Silas Toronthal, formerly a
banker at Trieste, and lately living at
Itagusa ?"
"if. havo no reply to that question. It
is for thoso that keep mo prisoner to
know who I nm."
"Thoy do know."
"Who aro they?"
"You will learn in duo time."
" Anl who aro yon ?"
"A man who has been sent to intorro
gato you."
"By whom 1"
"By those with whom you have ac
counts to settle."
" Once more, who aro tiiey ?
"I shall not toll you."
"Iu that caso. I shall not roply."
"Be it so ! You were at Monte Carlo
with a man you havo kuowu for nany
years and who has not left you lineo
your departure from Bagusa. This
man is a Tripolitan by birth and his
namo is Sircauy. Ho escaped at tho
moment you were arrested on tho road
to Nico. Now this is what I havo been
sent to ask you : Do you know vhero
that man now is, and if you know, will
yon toll mo ?"
Toronthal took a long timo to nply.
If they want to know, ho Ithoilglit,
whero Sarcany is, it is obvious that
they want to got hold of him as hoy
have got hold of me. Why ? Is it for
something wo huvo both boon con
cerned in during tho years gono by,
nnd particularly for our schemes in tho
Trieste conspiracy ? But how can theso
tilings havo been found out, aud wlo is
thero interested in avenging Mathias
Sandorf aud his two friends who iied
iifteon years ago? Theso wero the
banker's first thoughts. Then, ho vent
on to himself, it cannot ba any propejly
constituted authority that threatens ho
nnd my companion aud that is sui
ous. And so, although ho had no doubt
that Sarcany had fled to Tetuau o
Namir, whero ho was trying his thiid
gamo nnd forcing it ns much as bo
could, ho resolved to say nothing about
it. If later on ho could gain anythinr
by speaking, ho would speak. Now h
would bo as reserved as possible.
"Well?" asked Luigi, after giving
him timo to reilect. '
"Sir, " ana worod Toronthal, ' ' I conld I
tell you that I know where Sarcany
is, and that I will not eay; but in
reality I do not know."
"That is your only reply ?"
"My only roply aud tho truth."
Then Luigi returned to inform tho
Doctor of what had passed. As thero
was nothing inadmissible in the reply,
thoy had to bo content with it And to
discover Sarcany's retreat, all that coidd
bo dono was to press on tho search and.
sparo neither pains nor money.

Judgo F is a very quiet, easy

smoothly, but let him ouco get rattled
and the neighborhood can not pacify
him. He will snarl at his best friend
when annoyed, and the man who plays
a practical joke on him had bettor emi

much worried over a chancery caso in
which ho is counsel, and his desk was
fairly littered with papers, whilo ho
was hurrying through with a certain
part of his work before dinner hour.
Suddenly the telephone boil rang n
gentle summons, just as though tho
girl in tho central office know the judgo
was busy and hated to disturd him, but
was, nevertheless, compelled to, in
order to satisfy the individual at tho
other end of the wire. The judgo rose
hurriedly, jerked the receiver from tho
hook, and yelled "Hello!"
A silvery voice a girlish wont-you-oblige-me
accent betrayed that ono of
tho fair sex was the caller. The judgo
toned down and inquired, "Well?"
"Is that Judgo F.'s?" said theswect
toned voice.
"Yes," was wafted back.

blandest tones ho announced himself at
the young lady's bidding.

not to be overcome by trifles, and an
idea struck him. lie determined to
oblige tho telephone girl, and ho pro
ceeded to inform hor to hold the tele
phone just a minute and he would be
ready.
Again tho bewitching voico uttered
thanks, and the judge put his plan into
operation. The telephone was along
side the office window, about half-tray
up the casmg was a stout nail; a revolv
ing bookcase stood on the floor. It was
quickly rolled over toward the window;
tho judgo mounted it, grasped the nail
on tho window-casing with ono hand,
tho ear-trumpet with the other ami
sang out "All ready."
There was no response, and the judgo
nearly twisted his neck out of joint as
iie leaned down and repeated tho words
through the transmitter.
The sweet vo co answered in a low
tone, and tho judge strained his ears in
listening. "Now, judge." came tho
message, "listen attentively and repeat
tho following words back to me, so
that I may know you heard them dis
tinctly:" "What part of speech is tho
word transmogrilicanbandanduciality?"
It was too mil oh, even for the judge.
On the tenth syllable ho squirmed; the
nail broke; he mado a grab for the tele
phone box; tho bookcase revolved, and
the renters in tho story below thought
the roof had fallen in. When several
of them camo running into tho room
the judgo was lying in tho middle of
t lie lloor, the law books trom the caso
between his knees, while in his hand ho
hugged the fatal car-trumpet, which
he had clung to in his fall, and the cord
of which had been snapped in twain.
Tho matter was given into tho Imnds,,
of a. detective, who last night reported
to tho judgo that the telephone com
pany employed no inspectors or testers
of instruments, and further, that tho
call camo from a private residence
whero the judge's wife was spending
tho day. An air of unusual coolness
permeates tho judge's homo now, and
the telephone company has lost a sub
scriber. Nashville Union.
Courting in Fancy Dress.
It would seem ns if thero wore no
satisfying tho changeful mind of
women. Everybody knows tho disas
trous effect produced on tho simple vil
lago maiden when the vorsatilo Lord of
Burleigh dropped the rolo of painter
and showed himself in his true colors.
Taking warning by this young lady's
sad fate, Mr. Conway, a thoughtful
butler, determined to reverse tho order
nf things in tho Lord of Burleigh's
cruel proceedings. So lie went to
America, called himself tho lion. Soy
niour Conway, and wooed and won a
high-born maiden to bo his wife. IIo
then brought his wife to his buttery in
England, whero ho of course dropped
tho Hon. Seymour part of himself and
prepared to" scttlo down to domestic
life. But instead of boing delighted at
this little surpriso the lady is terribly
annoyed. It is truo sho has not died,
but she has dono the next best thing,
and instituted divorce proceedings.
Courting in fancy dress seems not to bo
a success whichever way it is tried.
