Local and General.
Tun Ww.uiWa Yvu.t:v.--Thi valley is
in the north-east corner of Union rounty,
Oregon. It is about 75 mile in length and
averages l"i tnik'S in width. Its elevation
above the sen level is from It .Mm to feet.
Its populntion is H.5fi0, and its towns are
Lustinc, Alder and Joseph. Stages run dai
ly, connecting thee town with the (I. IS. t
ff. Co's. railway at I. a Grande. 70 miles
from Jo.-eph. I'lio valley has doiiHfcd in it
wealth and population in the past thice
yearn. The Wallowa is noted for it pure
air and water, healthful climate and beauti
ful scenery. Rich silvcrniiues and exten
sile deposits of the best iiality of marble in
the United States .are lioiiig "developed in
different part of the valley. Wheat, oat,
rye, barley. pi'latoos and the hardier vege
tables are produced in jjreat abundance,
and yield more to the acre than any other
part'of Kasttrn Orcg. n. The great extent
of wild pasture land makes the valley an
excellent stock couir.ry. The thouands of
acres of vacant guvcrumcnt laud renders
the Wallowa a desirable locality for persons
seeking homes in the far weft.-- Chieftain.
Thk Ft Ki-Tiov. The otlicial returns from
the various precincts of the county have not
all been received up to the timeof going
to press, and we are therefore unable to
publish them this wepk. There is little
doubt, however, that the democratic, ticket
in elected, with the exception of Merry, can
dicate forsheritT, who was traded on". Next
week we will publish a table, showing Un
vote cast in each precinct for each candi
date. As for the Slate ofllcers. it now looks
as if Waldo and Mel'.ride had won over
Ktrahan and Uibnns, but uothimr will be
determined till the returns are all In. It
is needle.-.' to -ay thatVennoyer and Webb
are elected by large majorities over Corne
lius and MarVton. and that Hermann. lin
ker and McKlroy are elected beyond a
doubt.
Wiiiat. There appears to he no dispo
sition anions the holder- of wheat to sell
last year's crop, even yet, and the local
market is waning. Yesterday, the mills
here were olVering 01 Vk. with but a slight de
sire to do bu-ine-s. The Oregon City mills
are using the "inland empire" or Walla
"Walla, which they get ten cents per bushel
eheaper tlian Vallev, hence the weakness in
the local market. There is very little talk
of export, ami local requirements arc re
ported light. As far a- can be learned, the
coming crop i- fully up to the average, over
the world, anil especially in the United
istates, ami the prospect for good price- af
ter harvest is not good. ..Salem Statesman.
Katiikk Dr.oFUvrxis. Last Wednesday a
package was brought into our sanctum,
"for the boss cannibal of the Scot'T." We
thought at first it was a dynamite bomb
sent by some ."socialist or wretched candi
date to cut oil' our brilliant career, and
we handled it rather carefully, but our i u
rioiity getting the better of our judgement,
we opened it nnd found it contained a lot
f the most delicious strawberries we had
ever tasted. Instead of the package tie-
trovinp us. we "destroyed" the package
suddenly. The berrie- were from the gar
den of S. T. Ulm, f North Union, and the
gift of Miss Mar; Watt, for which we re

SALTPHTni: JIi.nk. i". A. Hovk' showed an
Oregonian reporter yesterday a specimen
of the product of a saltpetre mine located
in linker county, about five miles from the
O. . it N. road. The rock .looks like bas
tard granite. A crude method of reducing
it to sahpetre is to dl-i've it in water and
then evaporate the li )uid. This was done
with one of tiic specimens mid the result
was a very strongnaltpetre of a dull orange
color. It sells in New York lroni 4j to fl
rents h pound Its principal use is in the
manufacture of gimp iwdcr.--lOregonian.

Sciiooi, ri.osru. After a very successful
term, the public school ol this city elo-ed
last Friday. The teachers have given en
tire satisfaction, so far as we know, and the
pupils generally have made rapid progress.
We regret that we have not space to pub
lish the examination. Prof. Oliver informs
us that the highest standing made was by
Ida Davi-, and the most regular attendance
by Maud Summers. Five pupils of the
school have obtained teacher's certificates,
which averages as high as any in t lie county.
