Mountains and the picturesque beau
ties of tho Blue Ridge with a force and
vigor combined with accuracy rarely
equalled, even by writers who still re
tain t lieu-sight, whilehehas been blind
since he was five years old. It is his
wonderful power of thus describing in
simple language the concrete things of
hie that renders iussermons and pray
ers so foreiful and attracts to them
such widespread attention. His first
invocation to attract notice in the
House was a vigorous denunciation
of rtock gambling, but recertlv ho
cast all previous utterances in tho
shade by referiingto the present labor
troubles in such a manner as to call
