"Secret society emblems nro nbont
played out," remarked a communica
tive Maiden lnno jeweller to an in
quisitive customer one flay recently.
"That i., in the Ent. Out West and
in the South they are ns popular no
ever. I don't know how to account
for it, excepting that the class of men
who are being initiated into secret or
ders nowadays are higher-toned than
they used to be, and consequently
less given to display. Then, besides,
any one can become a Mason, Odd
Fellow, or Knight oT 1'athias, provid
ed he is any sort of n man nt all, and
this has cheapened the valuo of such
insignia. There was a time when no
Mason could bo found without his
gold square and compass, and
you could toll an Odd Felluw as
far oil as you could tej him
by his three joined links. If you want
any proof of the decrease in this cus
tom just look into the windows ol the
Bowery pawnshops and notice tho
largo number of tlieso emblems which
nte offered for sale. I find the falling
ofl'in salesaseriousone in my bushies.
The style of emblems, too, has changed
within the past few years. Formerly
nothing were wore but vest pins,
watch-chain pendants and larce seal
rings. Now wo sell more small rings
with onyx stones set in them in which
tho token of tho order is neatly en
graved. The upper degrees of Mason
ry are generally denoted by a small
band ring of gold with a plain dia
mond setting and the ligure of tho de
gree engraved on tho reverse side of
the ring. For many years the Maltese
cross of the Knight" Templar, with its
helmeted head and a keystone on tho
back was tho most stylish emblem we j
sold, but now the demand for them !
comes almost entirely from the West
nnd South, and the small towns m
tho East. The largo cities use very
few of them comparatively.
"There is another reason for thi3
decline," tho jeweller observed. "It is
by no means conclusive evidence, be
cause a man wears aMnsonieoniblem,
that he isn bona-lido member of that
order. It is a comparatively easy
matter for him to wear a Maltese
cross, for instance, and "pass readily
for a Knight Templar for years, per
haps, without being detected. 1 don't
know that such a trick would benefit
a man at all, but men often do thincs
which please their vanity, even if they
do not line their pockets. Several
years nuo I wnstraveliiigin Minnesota
se.ling Masonic and other secret so
ciety emblems to country jewellers.
I stopped in tho little town ot Waba
sha and sold quite a bill of goods.
While I was in tho storo i placed a
handsome thirty-second degree Ma
sonic eagle on my watchguard to bet
ter show oil its beauty. Now I am
not a member of any secret society
and never intend to lie. When 1 left
the shop J forgot to take this oil and
so 1 wore it down to the train. Before
wo had come to tho first station.
Lake City, I discovered that I.
had left my, pocket-book with
some of my samples in a small bag in
the storo and was absolutely penni
less. I didn't know a soul on tho
train and wanted to reach St. Paui
that night, where 1 could telegraph
back to Wabasha and have ny ba-;
sent to me. It was a very long train
fourteen coaches, I think, and I was
in the parlor coach at tho rear end of
it. 1 knew the conductor would be
along in a few minutes, and hated
mightily to be put oft' the train at
Lake City and miss a whole day,
which I knew would surely happen un
less 1 managed to borrow tho money
fcomowhero 1 then looked about me.
A few seats in front of mo there sat a
young man whoso clothes denoted
that ho had come from the East. With
serious misgivings I took my place be
side him, and after introducing my
self gave him my business card, lie
also gave mo his. llo represented a
West Broadway grocery. As we were
exehawzeing cards, I noticed that ho
wore a handsome Masonic charm on
his watch chain. 1 then told him my
dilemma.
" 'I am in great trouble, 'I said,'
nnd I want to ask you to pay my
faro to St. Paul, and I will return it
when we get to that city. 1 see you
ure a Mason '
"Yes, he interrupted hastily, as ho
glanced down at tho emblem I wore.
'1 fchall bo glad to accommodate you.'
"By the timo tho conductor arrived
tho matter was satisfactorily ar
ranged, and I was safe to pursue my
journey. Although I felt very friendly
toward my benefactor, I found him
singularly'ill at ease in my presence,
and as soon as he could excuse him
self ho left mo in the front car. I didn't
seo him again until we reached our
journey's end. The next day I called
upon nun at his hotel and repaid the
loan. About threo months later I
was pleased to see this same man
stand in front of my store looking into
the window. I went to tho door and
asked him to step in, which ho very un
willingly did. Of course, I alluded to
the scrape ho had helped mo out of,
and acain expressed my gratitude to
him for his generosity.
" 'It would havo been all right,' I
said, 'if I had known any ono to havo
called upon to assist me. But I was
absolutely friendless. I am not a
member of any secret order.'
" 'You ain't,' ho exclaimed, as ho
gave a great sih of reliaf. 'I'm glad
to ln.ar that. Neither am I.' "
