Wallowa Toll Knail.
From the Oregonian wc learn that the
Wallowa Cativon Koad Coiniiany has lllcd
articles of incorporation with the Secretary
of State. With J. 11, Smith, ), P. McDan
icl, and Matt. M. Johnston as incorpora
tors. Object, to construct and operate a
toll road through Wallowa canyon, four
teen miles, in Union county. Principal
office at Cnion; Capital stock 10,C00, in
100 shares.
Interviewing one of the incorporators
concerning the above, wc gather the fol
lowing information: He said that upon
investigation of the lnatter, thev had be
come aware of the fact that there never had
been a legal road of any kind, through the
Wallowa canyon ; nnd as other parties in
the interest of railroad capitalists wore ina
king preparations to lay a toll road there,
they made haste to incorporate, lie said
he believed Ihc people of Wallowa, gencr
ally, were favorable to a toll road, as they
had found it Very hard to keep tho road in
a passable condition! and would rather pay
a small toll than bo hdthcred with working
on it. Work will be commenced shortly,
and the road put in good condition. The
toll they propose to charge for a wagon
ami span ot nor.sci, is im cts., anil every
thing else in proportion. We do not know
how this move will strike the people of tho
Wallowa. The first intimation anyone in
this section hd of this affair was the above
item which appeared in the Orcfronian.

New Bridge, Feb. 11.1SB0.
Union county, at the present dav
takes the lead in miuerals, and bids
fair to be tho richest section on the
Pacific coast in the near future. V on-
derful discoveries have never been
made known to the public.
Discoveries in placer have recently
been made on Snake river, bv bowler
and Neuncr, of Cornucupia, that bids
fair to prove valuable.
The Whitman and Allen & Cox
mines, located near Cornucopia, and
many others, are surprisingly rich in
gold and silver.
Simmons it Co., of Union, also have
very fine ledges of gold and silver
some three miles north of Cornucopia
tine in particular, being worthy of no
tice. They aro down on it to the
depth of 80 feet, and the rock assays on
an average $ 1 0.10 per ton.
Then in traveling south-west some
1.1 miles, we come to another mineral
belt, in which aro located the mines of
Brown, O'Connor & Co., which are
composed of gold bearing quartz that
assays from !f3.r) to $75 per ton. (free
milling.) I heir main ledge is 12 inch
es wide, and located within one mile
of the new road survey. J. B. Fewel
and K. W. Makinson also found some
nice looking quartz veins near the
Brown it Co. ledges, lato lust fall, but
did not prospect them much as they
were covered with snow shortly after
being found.
Beeves it Holcomb havo three good
ledges near Eagle creek, and some 12
or 1J miles north of Eagle Vullev
These gentlemen feel confident of suc
cess, and will commence work on them
carlv in the stirinir.
Sp;uta, and old and once forsaken
niiiiing camp, is reviving again, and
some rich quartz discoveries have re
cently been made there. Of tho num
ber, we will name the discovery made
by Mrs. AinsWorth, the richest of all.
It appears that Mrs. Ainsworth hud
tried to persuade her husband to pros
pect that certain place for some time,
but he thinking it no better than where
be was working, refused to do so. Mrs
A. decided to trace the iloat a little
farther and then dig for the precious
metal herself, and in a short time af
ter she commenced the search. She
was rewarded by finding several pieces
of rock on some loose dirt that a go
pher hud ejected from his hole in the
ground. On clo.-e inspection she saw
shining Specks of gold. 11ns encour
aged her old inan( and hound his part
ner speedily enlarged the gopher hole,
and consequently have the richest of
all finds in Union county. They are
down on tho ledge some 55 or GO feet,
and the rock is, if unvtlnngi richer
than at first. McGee and Davis also
havo some good ledges located near
the Ainsworth find.
Milt. White, of tho "Lilly White," is
so well pleased with its prospects that
he will erect a mill early in tho spring
It is located between tho Ainsworth
and Ilogem. Clough it Duncan, of
tholnttes pluco, have u very rich nunc,
from which they have taken out !f 10,
000 or $50,000 in the last five years,
with an arastra.
