Fvi rot tie time past there his liecn
slato. units made by the respective ed
itors of tho Mountain Sentinel, .if Un
ion, and the Argu, at La Grande,
against each other, of a very damaging
character, in couscqneneo of which
impolite literature the angry passions
of each rose to a fever heat, which
came near ending iu a bloodshed, or
something of that kind. Last Monday,
Atty. C. If. Finn, associate editor of
the La Grande Argus, came over to
Union on legal business, and when
bout to return, it seems J. B. Fithian,
former editor of the Sentinel, conclu
ded to ask him to make an explana
tion of his assertions against his (Fith
bin's) character, and we understand,
threatened to cane him or make him
take it hack. He went to the hotel to
await the arrival of the stage for the
train, and where it was supposed Mr.
Finn would get on. Mr. Finn had his
optics peeled, however, for breakers
ahead, and got a private carriage at
Benson's, and started for the depot, in
company with Mr. Campbell, of la
Grande. As the hack drove down
through town, Mr. Fithian stopped it,
but the driver was immediately ordered
by Finn to drive on. Fithian being
foiled in his attempt to obtain an in
terview with Finn in town, ordered a
hack from Elliott's stable, and he,
Ed. Martin and George Neweomb star
ted for tho depot, to catch Finn before
train time, which they did. Arriving
at the depot, Fithian met Finn and
asked him to explain, and after some
words, Fithian told him that if he
would lay his pistol on tho counter,
he would "mop the floor with him."
It also seems that Finn had made some
statement in regard to Judge Craig's
ollicial character, in the presence of
George Neweomb, namely, that "Craig
could be bought for ten dollars." Mr.
Craig was called over to the depot,
and in the presence of Neweomb, he
asked Finn if he had mado such a
statement. Finn denied it, whereupon
Neweomb caught him by the shoulder
and told him he was a g d liar.
Finn attempted to draw his pistol, but
before he could get into shape New
eomb had his pistol leveled on him.
Judge Craig caught Newcoinh's arm
anil took the pistol, from him, at the
same time Fithian knocked the pistol
from Finn's hand. By this time the
train was in. and Finn lit out for the
ears, and got inside. Fithian picked
up the pistol, and Campbell and an
other man tried to take il away from
him. but he slung them around, and
knocked one fellow down, and made
things lively for a time, much to the
consternation of the passengers, who,,
no doubt thought the train had been
attacked by a gang of wild western
desporadoes, thirsting for gore. Fith
ian and his party returned to town,
still in possession of Finn's shooter.
Xext day the constable of La Grande
precinct arrived with a warrant for the
arrest of Fithian and Neweomb, and
with the assistance of Slierill' Saun
ders, placed both of Jheni under ar
rest, and that evening he took them
or il might bo more proper to say they
took him (for he had imbibed freely of
the Oli-bt joyful!) back to La Giande
for examination.
On Wednesday evening the defen
dants, Neweomb and Fithian, had
their trial before Justice Mahafl'i-v.
After many contradictory stateinonts,
made by the plaintiff, tho defendants
were discharged. We understand
Judge Craig presented Finn with the
pistol taken from him, in a very neat
and well timed speech, supplemented
willi some good wholesome advice.
Probably all the parties acted with un
due haste in the mutter, but such iit
lifo o:i this mundane sphere.

I The Pticntlfto nnd Minin I'rcsn of Han
Frnti'-iTo, 1ms the following relative to our
tninri;
More nttjntion i hi pijf turned to milling
in ()rKon of late than fur many years past.
Southern Oregon particularly has done
well. Several mills have been erected, and
a groat ileal of prospecting is being done.
Daring the year 1885 the product of placer
gold in Baker county aggregated about
ffX).O0O, and bullion from quartz lead,
gold and silver, about $100,000. The pre
cut and prospective acti Ity in mining gives
promise of making the output of prcrloui
metals fur ISStt several times greater than
that of the year just closed,
The excitement of the past year in Orr
gnii was tho I'inc Creek mino. There war
nut enough done to really tell the value of
the mines, hut many think there will be a
number of other good mines found in the
district next sprint. Tho great want of
the region ii reduction works. Numbers of
miners have taken out small lots of ore,
but they have no way of rcduring or dif
poking of it.
The men who loft the camp during the
winter, after spending several months
there, intend returnius? there in the spring
to resume work, nil indication that the)'
who ought to know best believe in the fu
ture of the camp,
There was some little talk during thn
summer of great success with the gold
lieaeb sands which could not he worked
with much profit until a certain niarhitif
was invented. It seems now. howover, ac
cording to the Coos Day News, that the
I'ugh Black Sand Machine has proved an
utter failure. At the Dlack Hawk mine
the machine used up I0J pounps of quick
-ilver. with a rcMilt of $2 hi) in gold.
In addition to her gold and silver. Ore
ion produced last year U)!W tons of pig iron
worth if." (1. 1 To. which shows a slight increasn
over last year's product and value
tlnul Ulght.
Senator Mitchell hasolfcred a resolution hi
the senate, which was adopted, relating to
transportation charges, It says that the
Columbia and its tributaries drain grazing
md agricultural regions of unsiu p.isscd fer
tility as large as (iermrtiiy or France. That
the freight charges on wheat from The Dal
les to Portland, eighty miles, are U cents ;
bushel, and for another distance of 211
miles are IS cents a bushel, It declares
surh charges are exorbitant and ruinous to
the producer anil instructs the Conunittos
on transportation routes to inquire into
them and the proper measures of rclcif.
Also as to the Importance, of a speedy com
pletion or thccaiinl nnd locks at the Cas
cades, and of tin' proper muans to bo adop
ted to overcome the obstrtiotionat tho
l);il!es.
Stiinitiil'il Time.
Dr. H. li. Drake informs ns that for all
practical purposes, Portland has adopted
'standard time." The time will be tele
graphed along the Western Union lino
iivery day at noon. Mr. Drake will also
receive it at the same time every day by
telephone, and will keep tlui time at Dan.
Moore's ho'el regulated by it, also the pub
lic tifhool will adopt the tinio. This will
be a great convenience to tho people of Un
ion, and w ill obviate tlii trouble of correct
time which heretofore existed.
