TIIK SPANISH THRONE
An Account of tlio DUnnlril Succosslon
untl tlio Claims or Doll Curio.
Philadelphia Times.
The dispute over the Spanish sue
cession, to which tho death of Alfonso
gives fresh in :erest, has its origin m
tho abolition by Ferdinand Vll., by
'tno pragmatic sanction of March 29,
"1830, of tho Salic law of tho Bourbon
family. This was done at the instiga
tion of his wile, Maria Christina, a
Neapolitan princess, and tho result
was to niako their daughter, who was
born in that year, thohcir to the throne
in place of his brother, Don Carlos.
Tho latter entered a protest against his
exclusion from tho throne, which was
sustained by tho Uourbonio courts ot
Italy, and on tho death of Ferdinand
VII. in 1 8H3 ho was proclaimed Charles
V., being supported by a majority
of tho clergy and the country people
throughout tho kingdom.
Tho Salic law, it may bo explained
wa3 the code established by the Sali,
ans or Salic Franks who, under Clovis
founded tho French monarchy. Under
tho Salic laws females were prohibited
from inherting landed property and
this feature of their law continued to
prevail in France with respect to the
inheritance of the crown, and also in
Spain, under tho Uorbon line, until
tho date referred to. The transfer of,
tho crown therefore, to tho Infanta
Isabella, with the Queen .Mother Maria
Christina as regent, was a departure
from tradition that was opposed by a
very largo part of tho nation. Tho
Carlists were at first so successful that
Christina was compelled to obtain
foreign recuits for her army, but after
the death of Zumalacarrcguy, thoCrirl
ist leader, tho royal troops, under
command of Espartero, gradually
gained tho ascendancy. Ifc was not,
however, until 1830 that the Carlists
wero finally overpowered and Don
Carlos fled to France, though the war
was not fully ended till a year later.
This was not acomplished until tho
government had made many concess
ions to the progressive party or exul
tades and radicals, and had been com
pelled to adopt tlio modified const itu
ttion of 1812. Soon after this other
agitations arose, and in tho autumn
of 1810 Mario Christina resigned and
left Spain with a number of conserva
tive leaders, leaving the government in
tho hands of tho progressive
party. Tho Cortes appointed
Kspartero regent during tho minority
of tho Queen, and under his adminis
tration great advances wero made in
tho internal economy of Spain, until
on attempt was made to seize upon
church property provoked general in
surrection, and in 1813 Espartero in
his turn embarked for England. Tho
queen was in this year declared of age,
a moderate ministry was foimed,
Christina was recalled, and soon after
the constitution of 1815 was adopted.
Tho ups and downs of tho reign of
Isabella II, novo nothing to do with
tho in-osent subject. There wero sev
eral CMclisfc outbreaks during this
period 5n favor of Don Carlos, Count
do MoKfemolin, known as Charles VI.,
tho S';r of the brother of Ferdinand
VII., cijready spoken of as Charles V.
On his death, in 1801, his right de
volved on his brother, Don Juan, who,
in October, IS08, abdicated in favor
of his son, tho present Don Carlos,
tho titular Charles VII. This was im
mediately niter the success of the in
surrection in 1808 and the flight oi
Isabella from Spain. Don Carlos die:
not make his entry into Spain in as
sertion of "his claim'to the throne until
1873, the country having inthemean
whilo been passing through a period
of storm and stress with various
experimental governments. After
tho fail'iro of tho attempt to
establish Amadous, son of tho Kiiin
of Itaiy. upon the throne, Marshal
Serrano, whoso death is justannounc

the Ixopublic, becamotho virtual rulof,
and do; oted himself to thosuppressicTi
of tho Carlists. In this ho sueceede'1,
but seeing a Republic to bo impraetil
obly hw niodo no opposition to the re
storation of tho other branch of tho
roy.-ti family in tho person of Alfon? o.
In 1S70 after a loilg and gallant strug

It will bo seen that the situation,! o
day is almost identical with that Oen

Tho proclaimed heir is a girl baly of
three or four years old, justaslsalrvlla

Queen mothers have even tho iTHiio

upon recognized tradition, and tho
claim of Isabella, had to bo asserted
by force of arms. Sho became J", de

sentiment of legitimacy has ncffctlio

not toward a Bourbon restoration

A mnrriage was lately broken of! in

The bridegroom had a strong disliko

How Sins-lc-IIandiMl n Robber
Tied up Seventeen IMoii lo Trues.
From tlio Pall .Mall Gazette.
Tho other day in one of the jail, of
New Zealand, there died a man who
for many years had been an ohject,
first of terror, then of interest, to tho
colonies. The early years of Henry
Garrett aro shrouded in a veil of mys
tery, but in 1812horeciovedosontenco
in England of ten years penal servi
tude. As at that time penal servitude
also meant transportation. Henry
was removed to tho colony of Norfolk
island. In that Pacific region ho dis
ported himself his full term, for it is
not until 18(55 that ho again oppears.
In that year Garrett, having reached
Australia, boldly conceived and boldly
carried out a most daring bank rob
bery. Garrett determined to carry
out his schemcsiimh'-handed, and pro
ceeded with the utmost coolness to do
his little job in broad daylight. Post
ing a noticoon thooutside of the bank
at Pallorat he had selected for his
operations, that the establishment
would bo closed for an hour,
ho went in, shut the front door after
him, and, presented a loaded revolver
at tho heads, of tho surprised and
somewhat disconcerted ollicials, ho
demanded tho contents of the safe.
Receiving this he quietly locked tho
clerks in tho building, and departed
smiling by the bock door, with a prof
it of 0,000 as t he reward ol his coui
merciol enterprise.
With this sum Henry escaped to
England, but being followed by a de
tcctivo ho was cauiiht in tho streets of
London. Tho trick by which ho was
raptured was rather a'mean one. The
detective thought that ho recognized
his man, but not being quite sure that
ho was the right one, he gives a loud
"coo-ec from tho sidewalk, and tho
unsuspecting Atistrailian, doubtless
thinkiim to help a fi-llow-colonist in
distress, turns sharply around, and is
as sharply nabbed. Sent back to
Austrailia he was tried and received a
sentence of ton ycara' penal servitude.
Upon the expiration ot his term Oar-
rett shook off tho dust from his pris
on shoes and crossed over to tho
neighboring colony of New Zealand.
Anions many well-planned rob
beries, with tho skillful execution
of which he distinguished him
self, chielly conspicuous was tho
feat ho accomplished of "sticking up"
not far from Duncdin, and relieving
them of their valuables. Tho process
of "sticking up" is charmingly simple.
Tho operator bounces out Irom his
ambush upon an unsuspecting party
of travelers, and, with loaded revolver
raised, he cries out "Bail up!" where
uponeverybody knowing what is
meant nil the men instantly throw
their hands in tho air. Any one mak
ing an effort to get at his sidearms is
shot. It requires a certain amount of
couraso to do this simple trick well.
Mr. Garrett, as usual, single-handed,
managed his seventeen men himself.
In a short time ho had them all tied
to trees, and then, at his own conven
ience, he emptied their pockets. With
tho kindliness of heart which won so
pleasing a characteristic of our amia
ble i bushranger, ho made a good lire,
boiled a billy of water and gave them
all tea. Moreover, knowing thesolace
of tobacco, ho filled from their own
pouches the pipes of such of tho Tinr
tv who smoked and lighted them.
Then wishing them a kindly "Good
night, good-night!" Mr. Garrett va
nosed. Ponipey uikI the- 'Possum.
Washington letter to Tho Philadelphia Rec
ord. Of course, you have heard tho clas
sic 'possum story which is always told
when 'possum is mentioned? No? Well,
an old darkey once caught a 'possum
one cold Thanksgiving Day. and taking
it home to his cabin, 'built up tho firo
and put it in the pot. , Then ho lay
down, tired out, with his feet to tho
fire, darkey fashion, and went to sleep.
As ho lay there snoring while the 'pos
sum simmered in tho pot his son, a
limber, bright-eyed youth, glided into
tho cabin. Ho took in the situation
in a moment. Tho 'possum was ready
to bo eotm and its strong aroma filled
tho room. Stepping softly to tho firo
tho graceless youth took tho 'possum
out of tho pot and rapidly devoured
its gamoy llesh, chuckling softly to
himself as- ho did so. When ho had
eaten all there was to cat he gathered
the bones in a little pile beside the lire
place, and then snicaiing a little of tho
'possum grease on the mouth and nose
of tho sleeping nian ho stolosoftly out.
By and by old Ponipey awoke. Tho
air was redolent of boiled 'possum
thu old man's mouth watered. Rising
slowly to his feet ho took of tho lid of
tho pot and looked in. ".lerusho
mighty!" ho exclaimed, "it's dono
gone." Then glancing down at tho
fireplace, ho saw tho whitened bonos,
ami pasaing his hand over his mouth
ho felt nnd smelled tho 'possum grease.
A broad smile spread over his puzzled
face: "Good Lawd!" ho exclaimed,
"I dono forgot I oto him!"

I fell across an nmusing story tho

London Life. Hungary, says Mme.
Adam, swarms with barristers. It is
tho ambition of tho Huncarion peasant
to make ono of his sons on advocate,
as it is tho ambition of tho Breton
and the Irih peasant to make ono son
a priest. Tho son of a wnoll farmer in
tho neighborhood of Pest h was sont
by his father to tho law school of the
town, but, cither from wants of parts
or application, was plucked in tho
qualifying examination. Not daring

The father, however, was not so ignor

Among tho many stories Lincoln used to

Ho had not gone tar before tho wagon be
gan to wobble. Said I, "Judge, I think
your coachman has taken it drop too
much."
Putting his head out ot the window, tho
judgo shouted: "Why, you infernal scoun

Turning round with great gravity, tho
coachman said: "llo dad! but that's tho

If peoplo knew tho facts they would bo
surprised to learn how many peoplo reel in
tho streets who nover"drinkadrop." They
aro tho victims of sleeplessness, of drowsy
