Land Commissioner Sparks lias pro
mulgated a decision w-hicb prohibits
the old custom of selling burned tim
ber, belonging to the government, at
auction. He says that Mich a sale
promotes forest fires by inducing un
scrupulous parties to lire timber for
the purpose of deadening the same and
thus rendering it subject to purchase
in large quantities. He holds that
standing timber, on public land is a
part of the realty, and there is no au

Senator Van Wyok says that the
majority of republican senators would
prefer to have tho republicans dis
missed from the federal service. They
think tho retention of these men in
the servieo of the government practic
ally eliminates from the republican
party some of its most efficient and
tireless workers. So long as they are
comforted with good positions ' they
will not risk Iheiu by working for the
"grand old party." Ho thinks that
the republican ci uators are more dis
satisfied with the president on aeeouni
of his retaining republicans in place
that are democratic senators. If this
is this case these republican officehold
ers will lose caste as faithful party
men if they do not hasten to resign
from positions in which their loyalty
to the party is questioned.
