Mr. ICdmuuds nominated Senator Sherman
for president of the senate. Mr. Voorhees
moved to substitute the name of Mr. I tur

upon Vorhees' motion and the amendment
was lost by a strict party vote, whereupon
Sherman was elected without further divi

the president and the lioin-e of representa

1'pon request of Secretary MeCook, Sher

llorsi:. In the house the chamber pre
sented a pleasant scene, the bright red car
pet leading to an air of ehoriness to the
hall, which had been thoroughly renovated
since last spring, while a number of desks,
including that of the speaker, were de
corated with flowers. Here and there were
.'roups of members chatting and laughing,
political animrisites being set aside for the
time being, while new members took advan
tage of the occasion to extend their
ncipiaintanco among their older and more
experienced colleagues. Tho chief part ol
the conversation was the chaugo of rules.
Tho galleries were crowded with tho ex
ception of the executive gallery, which was
only partially flil'd. A majority ol the
spectators were ladies. At noon the house
was called to order by J. B. Clark, clerk,
and the llrnt sesMon of the Forty-ninth

Tho Lnt KITurt tho Itcnt.
"Tlits ts a world o! effort, wo know,
Fanny, and wo must never yield when so
much depends upon us," Mrs. Chick snid to
Mrs. Donibey as tho latter lay dying soon
after littlo Paul had been ushered into the
world. BuOMrs. Dombey could not make
nn effort and "drifted out upon the dark
nnd unknown sea that rolls round nil the
virld." Mrs. Chick was not an agreeable
character and no words of heis could rouse
the gentle mother's spirit.
"Wo will mnko one more effort," said
Mrs. 0. Thornton, of Stuart, la., to her
husband when ho was utterly discouraged
by sickness. Mr. Thornton made tho effort,
and why it was necessary for him to make
it he tells as follows:
"I had been subject to tho rheumatism
for sovcral years, it often confining mo to
tho house for two or three months nt a
time. During my last attack I was entirely
helpless and could not do so much as to
feed myself. 1 had been in this condition
for six weeks and was getting very much
discouraged, as nothing I had already done
had even given me relief. My wife noticed
tho advertisement of Atlilophoros about
the first time it appeared in our papers.
She said to me:
"'Well, here is nnothcr remedy for rhcu
nintism. We will make one more effort.'
"I took my first doso about 0 o'clock
and almost directly went to sleep. Xot
hnving had any sleep for threo or four
nights tho relief was gladly received. I
slept soundly until 0 o'clock, when my
wifenwokeme to tako unothcrdose. I had
been for several weeks lying on a lounge.
When I awoke to tako my second dose I
found that I could movo without pain. I
said to my wife:
"'I guesi I will get up and go to bed, and
I did, getting a good sound Bleep. Tho
next day I was up and could walk around.
I continued witli tho medicine until I had
used threo bottles. la five days after
I had taken my first dose of Atlilophoros I
went to work and I havo never lost a day's
work from rheumatism since. That was
over a year ngo."
"You probably spent considerable money
before that in doctoring yourself with dif
ferent kinds of medicines, Mr. Thornton?''
"Yes, I did. It I had known of Atlilo
phoros four years ago it would havo saved
mo much suffering and money for medicine,
as well as tho time I lost in not being able
to work."
'"Don't you think you rnn a risk in going
to work so soon niter such a longsickness?"
"I did, no doubt, but I felt assured that
I now had a remedy that would soon knock
the rheumatism out of me if I had it again.
I felt anxious to go to work after being kept
from it so long. Atlilophoros has done for
mo what nothing else could do, and 1 tako
pleasure in recommending it toothers. It
has proved itselt in my cato to be all that
it is claimed to be."
Mr. Thornton is employed in tlieChicngo,
Rock Island and Pacific Railway shops at
Stuart, and is well known us a hard work
ing and industrious: citizen. Ho takes great
pleasure in telling the story of his euro and
often says that that "one more effort" was
tho best ho over made, and that ho owes
life probably to Atlilophoros.
