It Results in a Terrific Collision Be
tween Two New Jersey Trains.
The lingliufe Completely Wrecked nud
Nearly a Dozen I'ernoiis Killed.
The Train Dispatcher Under Arrest.
Jersey City (N. J.) dispatch ot the 18th:
On the Meadows, four miles west ot this
city, a collision occurred between tw trains,
this pvoning, which resulted in the death of
nine po .ions and tho injury of several
othcin. Tlio Pacific express, leaving hero at
8:15 o'clock, ran into tho western-bound
emigrant train, which hnd stopped at ft
conl chute, on tho enst side of Hnckensack
bridge, knocking a portion of tho latter
across tho track of the Lehigh Valley road.
Shortly afterward u Lehigh Valloy train,
eastward bound, came thundering along
and crashed luto tho wreck. Tho dead
were all on the emigrant train, as were also
tho injured. Tho brakeman ot tho latter
train was among tho victims. Tho wreck
was the most frightful one which has oc
curred on tho road for years.
Following is a full list of tho dead and
wounded as far as known:
Killed Karl Henry Orommer, nged 30
years, Norwegian; head taken oh; had
threo tickets from New York to Ilattlo
Creek, Mich., and pnpers showing that ho
arrived by tho steamship Klbo.
An unknown boy, aged 8 years, horribly
crushed.
An unknown woman, head off.
Knlina Arnenrcs, aged 20, who was on
her way to Mndison, Wis., wherohcr father
residea; died at the St. I'Yaiicis hospital.
Four more bodies wero found this morn
ing under tho wreck of tho Lehigh Valley
locomotive; they have not been identilied.
Two unknown boys were found under the
pilot of tho engiuc, ono 8 years and tho
other 12.
An unknown womnn, hend and arms
gone; remains badly scorched.
An unknown man, trunk burned to a
crisp, was found Uvo feet below the surface
of tlio wreck.
Thomas 11. Trntt, telegraph operator,
has been arrested. Pratt is 2C years old
is an experienced operator. Ho admits
that ho did not give tho right signals, and
says lie was advised by friends to desert,
but refused to do so. lie is held to await
tlio action of tho coroner's jury. Ho re
sides in this city with his wifo and threo
children.
Of tho threo bodies discovered buried in
front or the Lehigh Valloy engine, ono was
that of a woman unknown and unrocogniz
able. Lati:u. Pratt, tho telegraph operator,
was arraigned this afternoon, on tlio cliargo
of manslaughter. JIc wnived examination
and was held to await tlio action of the cor
oner's jury. Norman L. Howe, counsel for
Pratt, makes tho following statement:
"Pratt was stationed in tho Marion signnl
tower, near the station of that name. Ho
controlled tho east end of a section of tlio
rond. known as a block, extending from
Marion to tho Fish house, on tho llncken
snck meadows, about threo miles distant.
It was his duty to record tho pnssago of
trains, and their passing tho Fish house,
upon tlio tally sheet which lay before him.
The emigrant train had passed his station
thirteen minutes beforo the Western express
approached. Pratt glanced at his sheet,
and mistook another entry for the record
of tho emigrant train, having passed tlio
Fisli house. Tho emigrant train hnd not
left tho block, however, Inn in; backed down
to pick up two cars which ha 1 broken loosu
from tho train."
In his statement to Chief of Police Mur
phy, Pratt admitted that ho had not re
ceived tlio signal from tho Fisli limiho, but
took it for granted that tho block was
clear, because of tho thirteen minutes which
had elapsed.
Supt. Crawford states that the investiga
tion shows that Pratt alono is responsible.
Tho wliito signal, denoting a clear track,
was shown, and justified the engineer of the
expicss in running in upon tho block.
Tho wrecked Lehigh Valley cngino was
raised this evening. In tlio mud beneath
was found tho body of a boy 10 years of
age. He had light hair. Doth legs were off
below the knee, tho right sido of his faco
was crushed and his hands scorched. 15e
sidu the body wns found the leg of a boy
who was presumably 12 years of ago. Tho
member does not correspond with tlio re
maining portions of nny of tho bodies
in tho morgue. It is thought an
other lifo hns been lost. This makes a
total of nine deaths. Tho dobris is being
carefully searched.
MRS. NELLIE GRANT SARTORIS.
A Iteport tliat SIio tin Separated from
llor lliiMbnnd.
Washington dispatch: The recently pub
lished reports of tho permanent separation
of Mrs. Nellie Grant Snrtoris from her hus
band caused Washington peoplo to remem
ber how much astonished and disgusted
they felt over the match. Tho Impression
Snrtoris mnde In Washington wns that of
a rough, conrso-hrained, and decidedly vul
gar, low-bred Englishman. His general
coarse conduct in connection with tho fact
that he had exhibited somo of Miss Nellie's
letters to him, accompanied with gross re
marks, to persons in a Wisconsin town
where an accomplished young Indy had re
jected his addresses, caused solicltuds
nmong many of Gen. Grant's warm per
sonal friends, and some of them consulted
as to the propriety of informing him of Sar
torls' conduct, with a view of regaining pos
session of Miss Nellie's letters. Sena
tor Matt Carpenter finally consented
to broach tho dolicato subject to
General Grant. He called at the
white houBo, nnd in as delicate a
manner ns possible commenced relating the
current scandal as to Sartoris' notorious
tonduet, when tho general quietly re
marked: "That will do, Mr. Sonntor; but
my daughter is engaged to Mr. Sartoris,
and the wedding will take place." Senator
Carpenter, in speaking of the interview,
said he never felt so chagrined as at the
president's abrupt closing of the conversa
tion, and that he would never ngnin, under
nnj circumstances, attempt to advise
.kbout the domestic affairs of any one. It
was well known that Gen. Grant wns op
posed to the alliance, but when his daugh
ter's affections wore engnged he acquiesced
and would listen to no argument or sugges
tion to the contrary. When Go. Jewell
was returning from his mission at St.
Petersburg to nccept a position in Grant's
cabinet he stopped n day at Southampton
to call upon the elder Mr. nnd Mrs. Snr
toris, the parents ot Miss Nellie's husband.
He was cordially received by them, but in
the course of conversation Mrs. Sartoris
nstonished the ex-minister to Russia by
remarking that "she did not see what there
was about Algernon (her son) to ctAiso the
daughterof thepresidentof tho great United
States to fall in love with aud marry."
Gov. Jewell subsequently expressed the
isme astonishment.
An Excursion Ends lu Riot.
A crowd ot :0,U00 people, among whem
was a large number of roughs, gathered on
the wharf at Pittsburg to join an excursion
to Davis island dam, where Capt. Paul
Boynton was to give an exhibition. Tho of-
cers of the steamer were overpowered, and
their boat loaded to the water's edge. On
this account t-ey were unablo to muko tlio
trip, and announced that tho exhibition
would bo given before tho wharf.
This leU to a riot, during which tho
rouchs with axes nud other iuiiilumcnts
I almost cut up tho excursion barges JCdna
I and Alice, and compelled- tlio officers to
jump into tlio river to save uieir lives, uc
cuuso they would not refund the money
taken for tickots. A largo forco of police
men wero ordered to the wharf, but order
was not restored for a long time. Tlio
ringleudora wero arrested.

A story comes from New- York, says a
Boston dispatch, that tho Transcontinen

thirty days its monthly subsidy payment
will bo stopped. President Adams, ot tho
Union Pacific, said that ho had no infor

Southern Pucilic on transcontinental bus

nnd ho was disposed to condemn in tlio
strongest manner possible their recent no

them. Tho Union Pacific was not at all
solicitous about transcontinental business,
and could do without tlio agreement much
hotter than tho Southern Pacific, which in
dicated a desiro to have tilings all its own

ho had talked tho whole Pacific mail sub
