Astoria, Or.. Aug. 21. The fourth
annual , tournament of the Oregon
State Firemens' Association opened
here this morning, and resulted in
some of the- closest contest ever
witnessed between rival hose teams.
The day was very favorable for fast
time, but past performances were not
equaled in point of speed. None of the
teams wero as fast as those that com'
peted in past years, but it is safe to
say that never before was there a tour
nament which was so thoroughly en
joyed by all. The best of feeling pre
vailed, and the sympathies - of . Astor-
ians were strongly in favor of the visi
tors carrying off the prizes. The first
race scheduled was the hand-engine
contest, but, as it did not fill, the cup
offered for it was transferred, to the
championship race,, upon condition
that it shall be won three times con
secutively befors becoming the prop
erty of the winner.
The wet-test race was the first con
tested, and brought out a field of five.
The first to run was The Dalles, but,
although the men made fast time - as
far as running went, they were beaten
by the man at the hydrant, who turned
on the water before the nozzle could
be made fast. No time was taken;
The Astorians followed, and, with a
poor start, covered the distance and
got water in 49 seconds. They' 'were
followed by Vancouver, who were also
credited with 49 seconds. The Liberty
hose team, of Portland, was next, and,
from their condition, looked like win
ners, but all three of the timers'
watches indicated 49 seconds1. The
excitement was intense and a proposl
tion made to divide the prizes, but the
members of each, team insisted on run
ning the race off later in the day,
Oregon City was unable to do better
than 52i seconds. In the hub-and-hub.
race, the first team to compete were
The Dalles and Vancpuver. The lat
ter won easily in 31 1 seconds. Lib
erty, of Portland, Oregon City and As
toria next appeareAry-Therhcat went
to the local men.' In the final, between
Vancouver and Astoria, a grand race
was witnessed. Vancouver got the
best of the start, but the local team
gained inch by inch in last 1C0 yards,
and looked' like winners. Vancouver
reached the tape, however, about four
incher in the lead. In the run-off of
the wet-test run, Astoria got water
48 2-5 seconds, and were followed by
Vancouver in 49 2-5. Owing to Liber
ty hose team's mishap of two men fall
ing at the start and the hydrant-man
missing connection, their time was 52
seconds. The race therefore went to
Astoria, with Vancouvor second.
The officors of the association for the
ensuing year were elected this evening
as follows: President, George C.
Sears, re-elected; vioo-presidents, N.
J. Sinnott, The Dalles; R. M. Stuart,
Astoria; W. H. HoweU, Oregon City;
C. McCarty, Vancouver; W. A. Wenig,
Astoria, secretary," J. S. Fish, The
Dalles; treasurer, W. H. Butts, The
Dalles; executive committee, F. J.
Carney, Astoria; R. B. Smith, Dallas;
W. H. Bliss, Vancouver barracks;
Charles Alisky, Portland; J. Trembath,

URGENT NEED OJf FINANCES.
Considerable Uneasiness Is Prevailing
in
Wall Street.
New York, Aug. 21. Considerable
uneasiness prevails in Wall street to
day on account of the report of distress
among merchants and urgent need of
finances. Estimates of a reduction of
$3,000,000 to $5,000,000 in tomorrow's
reserve in the bank statement and a
corresponding heavy shrinkage in de
posits have encouraged the expecta
tion of an early issue of clearing house
: certificates by the banks. A careful
canvass of the leading bank officials
has elicited the unanimous expression
of opinion that there was no need for
an issue of certificates at the present,
and such an issue will only be made in
case of extreme necessity. A limited
market is reported today for choice
grades of mercantile paper at 8 per
cent. Time money is an unknown
quantity at' 6 per cent and - commis
sions. Private cable reports an ad

NATIONAL DEMOCRATS. -
They Held a Convention la Portland Latt
Saturday.
New York, Aug. The Herald
this morning published the following
correspondence from Santa Ana, Cuba,
under date of August 13:
In speaking of the attitude of the
United States toward Cuba and the
possibility of President Cleveland
recognizing the belligerency of the in
surgents, General Oomez said:
"I have forbidden the discussion of
the subject in my camp. For weeks
men fairly held their breaths waiting
word from Washington. It was a
waste of time. , Long ago I realized we
must fight this war alone and unaided.
We can win our independence while
the executive of the United States is
considering the question of our possi
ble belligerency.
"I have no doubt of the sympathy of
the American people as a whole. In
fact, I have the best evidence of their
good willi4 ManyAmericans are fight
ing in my-ranks, and 'good, true men
they nire. The chief of our artillery is
an American from Boston and no
braver man lives."
"As certain of it as I am that Cuba
is an island, but I mflst fight the battle
my own way. .1 know that we are
called guerrilas; that some people.
marvel because we prefer to fight from
ambush, but we are in this war to win.
Ammunition is scarce and I think I
know how to use it to advantage.
Cuba is ours now. ' It is true the Span
iards hold -most of the seaport cities
and some of the interior towns, but in
the latter they are getting very tired.
We don't lot them stop much, and now
we will see that they do less. The
city of Puerto Principals hungry now;
Guaranino is suffering and Victoria de
las Tunis is nearly starved. Sabancu
is abandoned. The cattle of Camaguey
and Santiago de Cuba provinces are
out of the each of the Spaniards, and
from this time forth there will be no
mere carrying of fruit and vegetables
into the cities- by paciQcoB. We will
have no more pacificos. Every man
on this island must be for Cuba or for
Spain.". . -

. Portland, Or., Aug 23. The gold-
standard democrats met in this city
yesterday for the purpose of electing
delegates to the national democratic
convention to be held in Indianapolis
on September 2.
The meeting was called to order by
L. L. McArthur. The convention was
organized by the election of L. L.
McArthur as chairman and Anton
Pfounder, of Forest Grove', secretary.
In accepting the chairmanship Mc
Arther commented on the absence of
the political agitators, "those to whom
the lust of office stilled every feeling of
manly independence." He could hot
accept the Chicag6--platf6rm for the
reason that it departed from the path
of true democracy. Neither could he
support McKinley. Committees on
order of business and resolutions were
appointed, and the convention then
took a recess until 1:30 p. M.
When the convention reconvened
reports of the committees on those en
titled to seats and order of . business
were read and adopted. " A committee
of 15 was appointed to recommend

test, which was captured by Astoria in
45 2-5 seconds; Oregon City second, in
46:00; The Dalles and Fourteenth in
fantry teams running a tie in 46 1-5.
Liberty, of Portland, met with an ac
cident, and their time was not taken.
The make-and-break contest was also
won by the local team in 1:26 1-5;
Fourteenth inf an trv second, in 1:39;
Liberty, third, in l:53i. The tender
race, hub and hub, was won by Astoria
No. 1. Then came the big event of
the tournament the championship
race. The Dalles led off, making
1:23 2-5, and were followed by the" As
torians, whose coupling became
jammed, throwing them out of the
race. The Fourteenth infantry team
could do no better than 1:26, and l:28i
was the best that Liberty could place
to their credit. ' Oregon City was also
unfortunate in this race, one of their
couplings breaking while the hose was
coming off the cart. This gave the
championship to The Dalles, a victory
which was very popular, owing in
some measure to the fact that The
Dalles had previously been unsuccess
ful. After the racing was brought to
a close, a test of the water pressure
made, 10 streams being thrown in the
air to a height of 185 feet. The visit
ing teams were much impressed by the
splendid water pressure of the new
water works. ' ;

A TERRIBLE DEATH.
Naphtha Launch Explodes With Fatal
' Results.
Marshfteld, Or., Aug. 22. News
of one of the most terrible fatalities
that has ever happened in this locality
reached town this morning when the
Gardiner -stage .arrived. Captain
Wylie, wife and child 3 months old
were the victims of the sad accident,
caused by the explosion of a gasoline
launch belonging to W. A. Reed, on
Smith river. H. Sengstacken, of
Marshfield; R. H. Pickering, of Port
land, and Charles Meade, of Gardiner,
had -not 10 minutes before gotten off
the ill-fated launch.
Messrs. Sengstacken, Pickering and
Meade left Captain Wylie at the Sher
rett place at 1:20 a. m. He had left
his three passengers about 10 minutes
behind when he ran on a rock. Here
the fatal accident happened. The gas
oline gave out, and the captain at
tempted to fill the supply tank from
a smaller one. The liquid evidently
took fire before the explosion occurred,
aB John Graham, the deckhand, and a
boy 14 years old, saw what was about
to happen and jumped overboard: The
captain started to take his family, but
before he could do so the tank became
heated and exploded.

THE CHAMPION HOSE TEAM.
They Were Royally Received on Their
Arrival Home, v
The arrival of the Regulator last
night was announced by the booming
of cannon and all manner of noises
that were possible for human ingenuity
aided by steam to produce. When
' Capt. McNulty, who was in command
of the Regulator, rounded Crates' point
he opened the whistle valve on the
boat, announcing that thflirallant
" ve8sel7 "that TsThe pride of The Dalles,
with its precious freight, The Dalles
hose team, who are now the champions
of the -Northwest, was soon to land.
This was a signal for the reception to
begin, and Dick Nolan opened up his
battery on the beach, belching forth
the glad announcement that our cham
pions were nearing home. Simultan
eous - with the booming of cannon,
every steam whistle in the city began
sending forth shrill shrieks, and the
noisiest one of all was the rock crusher
engine which had been supplied with
five whistles of different tone, that
fairly rent the air with their noise-
making contrivances. '
In less than no time, ail The Dalles
had congregated on the wharf, at least
3,000 patriotic citizens having as
sembled to welcome the champions
.Scarcely had the boat effected a 'land
ing, when the 'concert band struck up
a lively air which was continued while
the team was disembarking and being
comfortably seated in the Umatilla
house bus, which had been specially
decorated for the occasion. Then the
procession started. It was lead by
Mayor Menefee and Chief Fletch Faulk
ner followed by the band. Next came
the bus with the hose team, followed
by the racing cart, hauled by citizens
with Capt. Lewis and Dr. Sidell, two
of the "old boys," who used to be fire
men, tuging at the ropes in the lead.
After them came the hose carriages
of the different companies, gaily fes-
toned with yellow and white, the colors
of the victorious team, and following
the apparatus was some hundred
bicyclists, prominent among whom
was .ex-Postmaster Nolan carrying a
new Droom.
The procession marched up Court
street to Second, then down Second to
the Wasco warehouse, then facing
about returned down Second to Union,
then down Union to the Umatilla house
where the banquet was spread. As
the procession returned, Second street
was made as light as day by a display
of fireworks in front of A. M. Williams
&Co's. and W. A. Johnston's stores
and the burning of red lights in front of
Blakely & Houghton's and Snipes &
Kinnersly's drug stores.
When the team reached the Umatilla
house they were cordially welcomed
by Col. Sinnott, who lead the way to
the spacious dining hall, where spreads
had been laid for the team and their
guests. Capt. R. J. Sinnott of the
hose team, was seated at the head of
the table, with Mayor Menefee seated
at the opposite end of the festal board.
The table fairly groaned with the
viands spread upon it, and the good
cheer it carried added to the zest of
those preeent, - creating general en
thusiasm. Toasts were offered and re

Our team and all Dallesites who
visited Astoria, with one accord, are
